Shame FSG wouldn’t offer him the terms PSG did..

Lost a key player & a reliable one too..

So you carry on with your spin it which way you like that Gini is a money grabber..

Well, I mean he is. He was going to go to Barca for a better deal, then he got offered twice what Barca were going to offer him and he went there instead. I know you like him Shabs but this is pretty clearly an example of a player following the money. All signs point to it. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.....

Quite clearly the club felt he wasn’t worth £9mil a year “after tax” that he is being paid at PSG which was also higher than what Barcelona were offering him - he went to PSG for the huge wage on offer - no one can blame him , that’s why the players go there

I like him - he was great for us but certainly not worth making him the best paid player at the club

Depends on your thinking and shows why he wouldn’t sign the contract the club offered

I mean this as a compliment to you but you can’t be that daft to think it’s as simple as that. You’re too smart to think this

Why can it not be as simple as that - he was offered a contract by a couple of clubs and went with the one that gave him the higher wage

A fair bit more too it than that.

I'm sad he's gone but when you think in the cold light of day it probably was the right decision given Gini probably wanted a long big money contract.

We have a bunch of CM getting the wrong side of 30 and need to think about refreshing that area with younger blood for the future and after signing Thiago it doesn't make sense to spend big money tying Gini down when those wages can be used more productively.

It was. The moment Thiago arrived it meant Gini was likely going to move on because we are not going to carry 3 key players in midfield all in their mid 30s. Contracts should be representative of future performance and not past performance, which can be overlooked in some cases (like Hendo, who should be with the team til he retires, however long past his peak that is) but no team can carry many "bad" contracts.

Having Henderson, Thiago and Gini all 33-34 and on big wages would handcuff the team too much and the team needs to slowly start turning the team over to the new generation.

You could argue he's going to a club with a better chance of winning the CL anyway, and certainly a club with a better manager (a manager who tried to sign him 5 years ago). Yes he took the higher wage but there's more to it than that nowadays with how average Barca look and the fact it could take them a few transfer windows to refresh their squad.

Obvious that FSG loathed to loose money on Gini but offered him below what he was worth... & now lost  Gini for nothing...

Ok for FSG to increase their investments but how dare Gini try to get a deal that represent his status in a title winning team... 🙄

He was also offered a contract by us 🤷‍♂️

His heart apparently was all set in Barcelona working with a hero until PSG came in with ÂŁ9 mil after tax

Why was it “obvious” - they offered him a contract at a length they thought was acceptable for his age - he turned it down and went with a club that offered him a significant amount of money. ( more than what we pay Salah )

Agree that Gini is entitled to get the best deal he can at his age but for us as a club that probably wasn't in our best interests moving forward.

You keep pushing this line, where have you got this from..?

& what’s wrong with asking for parity in pay ..?

ÂŁ165k after tax - to get that in the UK would mean a basic wage of ÂŁ310k a week , Mo gets ÂŁ200k

It’s also double what Barce offered

Nothing wrong with asking for parity of pay - doesn’t mean the club should bow down to the demands .

As a supporter I'd have given him a new contract.

As an owner of the club I'm sure I'd have let him leave.

I can see what he would have still brought to us if we kept him but also can see the rational in letting another over 30 CM leaving and using those wages elsewhere.

Isn’t Romano a very well respected Journo who provides quite a lot of transfer news that turns out to be correct -

That wage would put him alongside the other first team players in PSG team apart from Neymar and Mbappe so why would not expect them to offer it to Gini as well

Gini was offered a new three contract with us but turned it down - he is a very good player but it should be clear to see why the club wouldn’t break the bank for him

If you said we could guarantee the Gini of the last 5 years for the next 3 years would you keep him the answer would be yes.

However, I can see valid reasons not to go all out and match PSG for wages — his age, possibly his motivation if he’s on a last big payday (if he was so preoccupied with securing improved terms), the risk of tying up a big wage in such an important area of the pitch and the potential to limit the next generation from coming through, the energy levels and freshness you need to play in a Klopp team, the fact that we can only have so many older players in the squad.

Then you look at Milner and say if he can do it why not Gini. Not as versatile, ok fair enough. It’s a tough one though I think. Not as key as some other players but still important enough that we better have a good plan to deal without him.

Congratulations Gini on 3 French league titles to add to your honours.

      Haha that made me chuckle

It is incredible though that they managed to lose this year's title to a team on the brink of financial collapse
