      The EFL Cup 2016/17
      Aug 23, 2016 05:45:29 pm
The latest reincarnation of the League Cup is under way with the second round ties being played today and tomorrow. With 21 games tonight and the remaining four matches played tomorrow. Currently in contention in the early stages are:

      Tuesday 23/8/16
      Crystal Palace V Blackpool
      Northampton V West Brom
      Newcastle V Cheltenham
      Preston V Oldham
      Stevenage V Stoke City
      Derby County V Carlisle
      Exeter City V Hull City
      Wolves V Cambridge United
      Burton Albion V Liverpool
      Peterborough V Swansea
      Norwich City V Coventry City
      Watford V Gillingham
      QPR V Rochdale
      Chelsea V Bristol Rovers
      Blackburn V Crewe
      Scunthorpe V Bristol City
      Millwall V Nottingham Forest
      Everton V Yeovil Town
      Oxford V Brighton
      Luton Town V Leeds United
      Reading V MK Dons

      Wednesday 24/8/16:
      Morecambe V Bournemouth
      Sunderland V Shrewsbury
      Fulham V Middlesborough
      Accrington Stanley V Burnley

The draw for the Third Round will take place after the Accrington Stanley V Burnley game tomorrow night, where the remaining Premier League teams will go into the draw.

What is usually the competition that's first written off and used to rest for the majority of top teams I think it will be more interesting and more competitive this year than it has been for a while. I think the recent influx of top managers and the latest burst of inflated transfers will have the pressure of instant success on many clubs. Gone are the days of the traditional Top Four and if and when they felt like it could pick this up with minimal fuss, and when they're second or third string did get beat there was always an unlikely underdog there to win it.

This year however, in the Premier League you have potentially 9 teams that will feel they are ready and able to qualify for European football, with a maximum of 7 places, potentially just the 6 up for grabs. So that could potentially leave 2 or 3 high profile appointments under serious pressure. Whilst it is looking like it will be Man City, Man United and Chelsea competing for the title, fourth and the remaining european places are very much up for grabs Arsenal, Spurs, Everton, West Ham, Leicester and of course ourselves will all feel quietly confident of taking those spots, and whoever falls short will look at it as a failure. But for most clubs a trophy in the cabinet is a success, it takes pressure off, failure to do so only intensifies it. Jürgen isn't here a year and people still call last season a failure, but win either of those finals and it's a different narrative. This will undoubtedly be the thought process of the likes of Bilic, Koeman and Pochettino. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Wenger go hard after this to either take the pressure off himself, or go out with silverware if the end is coming for him. I also think Guardiola, although he will be primarily focused on the League and the Champions League, will appreciate the importance of an early trophy in his tenure.

I think there are too many big name, big ego managers going around at the moment to let this one slide by. Mourinho, Guardiola, Conti, Klopp, Wenger, Koeman, Bilic, Ranieri, Pochettino and a dark horse in my opinion being one Rafa Benitez (With a squad better than it's current position may be capable of competing on both fronts). These are all men who are geared to win, and not all of them can, or will, so expect them to look to get on the board early with this competition.

Add to that, that the winners automatically qualify for the Europa League Qualifiers next season, this could be European qualification for those that are going to fall short in the league this season. It's success for those can't compete at the very top for various reasons, and I feel that this year, more than ever, that will be huge.

English Football League. The whole thing is becoming Americanised with the abbreviations and what not.

The third round draw in full:

      Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

      Leeds United vs Blackburn Rovers

      Queens Park Rangers vs Sunderland

West Ham United vs Accrington Stanley

      Southampton vs Crystal Palace

      Swansea City vs Manchester City

      Fulham vs Bristol City

      Bournemouth vs Preston North End

      Tottenham Hotspur vs Gillingham

      Everton vs Norwich City

      Derby County vs Liverpool

      Northampton vs Manchester United

      Brighton vs Reading

      Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

      Stoke City vs Hull City

      Leicester City vs Chelsea

With the exception of Leicester vs Chelsea they all seem fairly one sided ties, obviously these games are always capable of throwing up surprise results. Wouldn't mind the mancs going down to "Formidable" Northampton!

Spurs the first of the top 6 to go out then.  Could be looking at 4 of the top 5 in the Premier League in the Quarter Finals.

It would be a surprise if they all dodged each other.

If last season's Europa League draws are anything to go by then we will probably get one of them again - although there's always Rafa as a potential tie.

I would prefer United to go through as they have a weaker squad and would probably be easier to knock out. City would play their first 11 against us and would be more of a challenge.

Not a great derby if you ask me, Utd wanted it more, and City looked if they couldn't be bothered. Sterling, i would not be surprised if he was sold in Jan, be really is useless for the majority of the time, we did well to get the price we did..

Agree re Sterling he seems to have really stagnated since he left us no real discernible improvement in his play.

      Liverpool - Leeds!

Good draw that. Should be another semi-final for us! Already wondering which line-up we will come out with for that game. Huge chance for Klopp and the lads to get that first trophy in with Chelsea and Manchester City out now.

      Other fixtures:

Manchester United - West Ham United
      Hull City - Newcastle
      Arsenal - Southampton

Hard to believe it's been that long. Good to see they are somewhere closer to where they should be after the money men almost ran the club out of existence.

Milner will be facing his old club, while Harry Kewell will probably be commentating on the game in some far off corner of the world.

Chris Waddle bitching and moaning because of some of the team selections in this round. Our's and Spurs' were 2 that were mentioned. Somebody needs to tell him that we played either close to or our actual best 11's in the previous 2 rounds. Pillock!

Wants clubs to name their teams at the start of the week so supporters could decide whether or not to buy a ticket. As if any tickets are even left at that stage.
This however goes back to something I've always said about why I don't have names on the back of my shirts.
I didn't support Gerrard Suarez or Carragher, I don't support Coutinho, Firmino or Sturridge.
Regardless of who is playing in the game or wearing the shirt I support Liverpool FC

So, with Arsenal going out but Utd going through to the semi, I'm slightly disgruntled. It's basically Utd or us for the trophy now, and whilst our team on paper and form can trounce Utd 9 times out of 10 (with the odd game being a 0-0).. it is Utd, and there is always the possibility of them grabbing an undeserved victory.

Have to hope we are not that unlucky...!

Much better signing than that overrated bag of sh*te, Pogba.

£80 odd million for some c**t who just strolls about in midfield.

Pogba got longevity though and can only get better red. He holds the ball up better than anyone else in the league. Him and ibrahimovic click so well together considering they haven't been in the same side long.
