Part of me thinks this is genius, part of me thinks it's ridiculous.

None of me is a goalkeeping coach though so...

I'd say its neither genius or ridiculous, sounds more like common sense to me.

“John Achterberg usually does it with his hands but it's better to use something else!

“Of course that's important. There are different things you have to do as a coach.

“First, as a keeper you have to learn the technique then you have to adapt to the real circumstances – having six, seven players around you.

“No-one gets out of your way. It is completely the opposite. They want to disturb your way.

“That wasn't a specific preparation for Crystal Palace. It was specific training for goalkeepers in the Premier League.

“West Brom was the same, it was pretty much the same against Manchester United. That's goalkeeping life. You can't change this.

“You can't say no long balls in the box and if there are then immediately whistle. That's not how it works so we need to prepare the boys and that's what John is doing.”

You could say the same thing about Achterberg too.

Yeah, if you watch Bundesliga matches, referees do not allow nearly as much contact or obstruction with the goalkeeper as is allowed in England.

Yeah I guess. Although one rugby pad isn't the same as Diego Costa and Fellaini barging into you.

Only a matter of time til Achterberg cleans out Karius whilst he's in the air and breaks his hand again.

Basketball training would be apt for Karius... Protect the hoop from the slam Dunkers...

He can defend against Matip, although that could be unfair

        ;D

It's how he keeps sneaking into sessions and training the 'keepers (without Jürgen knowing) that baffles you Dmasta; am I right?

Gone are the days when a keeper would come for a cross and take everyone out in the way, even his own defenders!!!

       :kop5cf8koxp6:

Seem to recall Reina's first Prem outing where he was totally taken out by Hasselbank with a foot to the chest - after the challenge Jimmy said 'welcome to the premiership'. The next corner came and he absolutely wiped him and about 3 players out - saying after 'thank you for the welcome'...

Whilst it may not be true, or my memory serves me incorrectly it makes the point. A keeper gets 'carte blanche' when coming for a cross if they get the ball or clear it. It would be great to have a keeper where you have total confidence in him taking the ball from every cross regardless of who is in the way.

Imagine half of the keepers of nowadays swapped into the 70s or 80s. some of them wouldn't last a week.
