Liverpool set to appoint Michael Edwards as sporting director
Liverpool are set to appoint Michael Edwards as the club’s sporting director.

The 37-year-old will be promoted to the newly-created role from his current position as technical director.

The decision by owners Fenway Sports Group has the full backing of manager Jürgen Klopp, who worked within the same structure at Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp has enjoyed a close working relationship with Edwards over the past 13 months and believes he’s the perfect man for the job.

Edwards, who has been at Liverpool since November 2011, will be put in charge of all football operations and will be responsible for player recruitment for both the first team and the Academy.

With chief executive Ian Ayre leaving Anfield at the end of the season, the ECHO understands that Edwards will take on full responsibility for transfer and contract negotiations with immediate effect. Klopp will continue to have the final say on all signings.

Personally I think a separation of CEO and chief negotiator is long overdue. More positive moves from FSG since Klopp came in.

      Agree with the OP.

A football only man should be dealing with transfers not a man who has to deal with American doughnut retailers.

      Long overdue.

Liverpool to appoint Michael Edwards as their first ever sporting director

      BY TONY BARRETT

Michael Edwards is to become Liverpool's first ever sporting director with his promotion set to be confirmed by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club's owners, imminently.
In what amounts to a significant vote of confidence in Edwards and the work he has done as technical director, FSG have decided to increase both the scope and seniority of his role as part of a review of football operations and a restructuring necessitated by the planned departure of chief executive Ian Ayre at the end of this season.

Edwards, 37, has been the subject of external criticism, but FSG's belief in his methods has never wavered and their faith has been increasingly repaid over the last 12 months with a number of the signings he presided over coming to the fore under the management of Jürgen Klopp.

Among those recruited in keeping with the transfer strategy that Edwards has implemented have been Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi, Emre Can and Sadio Mane. The former head of performance analysis at Tottenham Hotspur also oversaw Liverpool's outgoing transfers during the summer when they sold Christian Benteke for £30m and Joe Allen and Jordon Ibe for a combined total of £26m.

A significant factor in Edwards' promotion is the working relationship he has established with Klopp, who had previously worked under a sporting director at Borussia Dortmund. Edwards, a graduate of Sheffield University, also has a strong rapport with Mike Gordon, the president of FSG who is heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the club.

While critics questioned the strength of the playing squad that Klopp inherited upon succeeding Brendan Rodgers in October last year, the Liverpool manager never doubted that there was substantial scope for improvement; faith that does not appear to have been misplaced given the strong start to the season that Liverpool have made.

Klopp is understood to be fully supportive of Edwards' ascent and the pair will continue to work together on transfers following a successful summer in which Liverpool made a profit on player trading and improved the squad at their manager's disposal.

Long term this is what we want..from under 9's to the 1st team everybody on the same hymn sheet playing the Liverpool way; no more of this tear up an idea after 2 seasons and rebuild.

If it helps the club to be run better and for the transfer process to be more streamlined then I'm all for it. It's certainly got to be easier dealing with an individual rather than a group where most of them have no idea what they're on about.

Does this mean we can finally say ta-ra to the TC, and do we now have our club back,

This great news, not just for now but for years to come, this method works, it's been tried and tested with other successful clubs, and managers manage their transfer plans better working with someone who is on the same page,

This fella obviously knows his onions with the transfer dealings he's so far been involved with, both ins and outs,

So hat's off to FSG,  they have obviously looked at the current situation with the departing CEO and decided to go a different and more positive route,

It's all coming together nicely both on and off the pitch,  all good stuff.

Nah mate... Edwards is/was the man, who asks the man [Graham], who asks the program (Graham wrote) if a player is worth £7m and not a penny more. Oh... he hired Graham btw.

Edwards is probably best described as FSG'S most trusted aide and chief advisor: the first they hired if I'm not mistaken.

A cynic might take a different view and describe him as an arse kissing chancer who's happy to throw his 'picks' under the bus so that he can survive.

      Thank F**k I'm not a cynic.

Shame it's taken five wasted years to do that.

Reading about this fella he's done some good deals. He was responsible for Coutinho, Firmino and Mane coming in, as well as our high priced exits last year.

Doesn't sound like the  TC is gone....just sounds like this guy will take over the transfer negotiations aspect that Ayre always handled. I know nothing about him but  I'll pretend that this is a master stroke of genius and shout my good favor!!!! Yes!!!!!!
