Liverpool's first leg of the semi final is away at St Mary's - the scene of last years 6-1 League Cup Quarter Final demolition.  Sturridge with 2, Origi hat-trick and Jordon Ibe with the LFC goals.  Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the first minute for Southampton that day.

Southampton entered the competition a round later than the reds as they had qualified for the Europa League.

They beat Palace at home (2-0), Sunderland at home (1-0) and finally Arsenal away (2-0) to get to the Semi Final.

Southampton will be hoping to avenge last seasons defeat but also to reach their first League Cup final.  Liverpool have been in 12 finals (a record) and won 8 (also a record).

Liverpool drew 0-0 at St Marys in the middle of November in the Premier League.  It was the reds first clean sheet in 12 games helped by Southampton failing to get a shot on target for the first time in 12 years.

The reds have Matip, Henderson, Milner and Coutinho all near to squad returns and they could be involved in the squad for this game.

The second leg at Anfield is a fortnight later on the 25th January.

We're on the march with Klopp's army ;) Got a ticket for the home game and I already got my head in the final at Wembley to be honest... really hoping the players are a bit more focused than I am though :D we are perfectly capable of beating them though, it will be interesting to see who plays, given we travel to Man Utd only a few days later.

Probably too soon for Hendo, Cou to feature in the 11

      Origi Firmino Studge
      Wijnaldum Can Lallana
      Milner Klavan Lovren Clyne
      Mignolet

Subs- Karius, Moreno, Matip, Lucas, Hendo, Coutinho, Woodburn

Still got 2 days to make Van Dyke a Liverpool player before KO 😁

On a more serious note, strongest side possible, if it ain't going well, get the subs sorted in time for them to make an impression on the game.
Anything less than s draw, will make it very hard to progress.
Current form suggests we could do well, but being a semi, I suppose form goes out the window. Everyone will be up for it 100%.
Gone for 1 - 3 to the red men.
Think our finishing is gonna improve after a good earbashing from J├╝rgen.

For me Sunday and 3 points there is far more important then this tie on Wednesday. I wouldn't change a whole lot from yesterday and keep Sturridge Lallana Firmino Clyne Milner Lovern fresh for utd

Karius, AA, Klavan Gomez, Moreno: Lucas Can Brannagan: Ojo Origi Woodburn

The first team won't have played for two weeks mate that's not good preparation for the Mancs.

Those 3 pts for me are more important, however, we still need to put out a respectable line-up IMO.

A score draw wouldn't be a bad result if we were able to maintain second gear throughout 90 mins.

Southampton will have other ideas though.

I don't see that being the line up at all. If they can't get past Plymouth at home then how are they supposed to get anything respectable against Southampton away to keep us in it for the 2nd leg?

I want to see a strong line up for this. Remember, semi final and away to Southampton. It's gonna be a difficult match.

      Absolutely agree
Seems to be that whenever we supporters underestimate a supposedly lower level opponent that we tend to come undone.
      Southampton are a good team.
I want klopp to select pretty close to his strongest team except for those that are in dire need of time to recuperate or recover from injuries.
Need our 1st team utterly up and running for the game after on Sunday and that that to me means getting them playing together on Wednesday.
Hope for a 2-0 win but can see a tight 1-1.

Without Hendo, 'the running man,' and Couts the 'creator of all things good,' and Mane 'the pace'
Anyone think there may be mileage in us changing tactics slightly and set up a bit more defensive than we normally do.
We've lost a bit of our attacking ability, and our defensive cover ?
Be safer to get the draw and take them home for the win, rather than go all out and get caught on the break !
Don't wanna be trying to recover from a loss in the second leg.
Get tactics right and I still see us wining 1:3
Get it wrong and we may get punished due to being weaker in vital positions, especially with bob being a bit off form recently !

We are not in great form to be fair and I don't think anyone would be surprised to see us struggle a little.

It'll be interesting to see how Klopp sets us up

Indeed second in the league and semi final of the Cup with one of our best points tally in the last 30 odd years.

Some people would have you believe we are in a relegation fight!

I hope not! Hope we get a resounding win like last year, and that gives us a breather for the reverse fixture, where we could afford to make changes to the 11 as we got Chelsea post that.

How is Middlesbrough 3-0 away, Everton 1-0 away, Stoke 4-1 home, Man City 1-0 home, Sunderland 2-2 away not great form? 13 out of 15 possible points from the last 5 matches! That's league champion form mate. Let's not be perfectionists who are constantly disappointed with things.

I'd like to add that the form you're referring to goes out of the window in every match ok?

Going for a draw in the first semi final, should go through with a victory at Anfield.

We are in for a really tough night I believe. I'll take a score draw going back to Anfield. Very interesting what team gets selected. I think it will be a strong one, and I think it ought to be as well. Can't throw a semi final away with kids, we need silverware back at Anfield.

That has got to be the ultimate aim this season, to win trophies.

Nope that would be really dangerous, our strength lies in pressing and harassing the opposition, if we start sitting off them then our defence and goalkeeper really will get exposed. We may not score with just pressing but we will at least control the game and to be honest if we play our strongest side, which I expect us to do, then we should still have enough to at least get a draw if not a narrow win.

Got to go strong here, still got 4 days until United after it. Still wouldn't bring Hendo, Milner or Matip into the squad though - they should just get ready for Sunday. Would be good if Coutinho got 20 minutes. Maybe give Bobby a rest so he can play with the kids against Plymouth next week.

I'd go with the diamond and use the pace of Origi and Sturridge like we did last year.

Karius; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Moreno; Stewart, Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana; Sturridge, Origi.

Oh bugger I just realised we have no option but to play Moreno :-(. Although could we not play TAA or Clyne as LB or perhaps Klavan as LB and then have Gomez as CB or vice versa, anything to avoid Moreno basically!
