      FIFA to vote on 48 team World Cup
      Jan 09, 2017 12:52:33 pm
      Fifa will vote on Tuesday on plans to expand the World Cup to 48 teams from 2026, in line with the vision of president Gianni Infantino.

      The Swiss, who claims to have "overwhelming" support for the expansion plan, favours 16 groups of three countries, with the top two progressing to the knockout rounds.

      If successful, it would lead to the first World Cup expansion since 1998.

      There are five options world football's governing body will consider.

      The expansion options

      Infantino, 46, succeeded fellow Swiss Sepp Blatter as Fifa president in February 2016, having campaigned on a promise of expansion.

      The former general secretary of Uefa [European football's governing body] initially suggested a 40-team tournament - an idea put forward by then-Uefa president Michel Platini in 2013 - before shifting focus to a 48-nation finals.

      The five options the 37-member Fifa council will choose from are:

      • A 48-team World Cup consisting of 16 groups of three, with the top two sides qualifying for a last-32 knockout stage (80 games in total);
      • Another 48-team version consisting of a 32-team, one-game knockout round, with the winners joining 16 already-qualified teams (80 games - 16 in preliminary and 64 in main tournament);
      • Expanding it to 40 teams, with 10 groups of four and only six group runners-up advancing (76 games);
      • A 40-team tournament with eight groups of five (88 games);
      • Keeping the World Cup at its present size of 32 teams (64 games).

      In Infantino's favoured option, the number of games rises from 64 to 80, but the finals can still be played within the existing tournament duration of 32 days, while a nation will play no more than seven matches, as in the present format.

      One potential flaw is that penalty shootouts may have to be introduced to settle drawn group matches to prevent two sides playing out a result in the last round of games that ensures both countries progress.

      I read somewhere that they also plan to merge both Conmebol and Concacaf into one so America will get probably 10+ teams in the WC.

      In my opinion 48 teams is too much, 32 is a good number where you get the top teams a good number of second tier teams that put  a good fight and a few that you know will get knackered so adding 16 more teams will give the opportunity to a lot of poor (football wise) countries to play in the WC.

      How I originally thought it would go is 48 teams split into 12 groups of 4, the top 2 go through and then 8 third place teams. I'm so glad that it appears that may not happen. I was fully against 3rd place teams being rewarded. It also made no sense that it was sometimes 2nd vs 2nd, 1st vs 2nd and 1st vs 3rd in the next round.

      Not sure how I feel about penalty shoot-outs being played after very draw. That could benefit teams who fancy a lottery after sitting 11 men behind the ball for 90 minutes.

      They have voted through the increase

      World Cup will expand to 48 teams from 2026

      An initial stage of 16 groups of three teams will precede a knockout stage for the remaining 32 when the change is made for the 2026 tournament.

      The sport's world governing body voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.

      The number of tournament matches will rise to 80, from 64, but the eventual winners will still play only seven games.

      The tournament will be completed within 32 days - a measure to appease powerful European clubs, who objected to reform because of a crowded international schedule.

      The changes mark the first World Cup expansion since 1998.

      Less group games is probably a good idea - let's face it - we have 2 years of group games.

      But not sure I'm loving the idea that drawn group games will have to be decided by penalties?

      Could be the slippery slope to it happening in league games etc.

      Thought the 24 team Euros with 3rd placed teams going through was sh*t enough!

      This sounds awful but not surprising.

      48 group games - 32 knockouts compared to 48 group games and 16 knockouts now.  Also ends the situation where you have to choose between what games to watch at the end of the group stage.

      So whereas you could 'only' watch 56 games live you can now watch 80 in four weeks! ;)

      Options for the extra 16 teams include:

      3 more from Europe
      4 from Africa
      Guaranteed Oceania side and a few more sides from South America.

      Yeah they want to tap into those asian and south american emerging markets to increase viewing rating even if that means lowering the quality of the tournament..it`s all about the money.

      25 Europe
      5 African
      3 North American
      8 South American
      4 Asian
      1 from 5th place Asian or Oceania 1st place play off.

      Would be fair

      Let's hope it isn't anything like the Euro's then because the whole tournament was painful to watch.

      Hopefully.

      Euro's was 36 group games and 15 knockouts.

      WC will be 12 extra group games but 17 extra knockouts so 'should' be better viewing.

      At least under this World Cup plan if you win one of your two matches you go through.

      It was a farce that eventual winners Portugal drew all their group games and went through as one of the 4 best third placed teams IMO.

      Not really, in fact you taken away .5 spot from us in CONCACAF  :laugh:

      Using your breakdown one of the issue with the expansion is South American because if you had 7-8 out of 10 nations qualify it really ruins what is prob the most competitive qualification route out of all the federations it makes it a lot easier which is why they are proposing combining the America's for qualifications. Not to say if they did combine them South American nations wouldn't have easier time (based on quality of the nations) but just numbers wise it looks harder

      Europe gets a world cup place for every 25 million people and Asia gets a place for every 1.1 billion.

      Sounds fair. Ha ha.

      They should scrap World Cup qualifiers for the British sides and have a home tournament between the four nations and the best side gets a place.

      I know this is going to sound harsh, but does anyone honestly want more Asian teams in at the expense of Europeans and South Americans where the real quality is?

      Personally I would want the quality of football to be as high as possible but this is just a route to open it up to more shitty teams to get involved who will end up becoming the whipping boys of their groups.

      Taiwan, Japan and China in the same group would be decent. ;)
