He was definitely one of the top refs in the league. £500k a year isn't to be sniffed at for a ref though. The Premier League is behind Italy, Spain, Germany & France when it comes to paying officials.
Personally thought he was a decent ref. Refereed our 3-0 battering of the Manc Inc in 2014. His departure will just highlight the sub standard refereeing in the league to an even greater extent. Clearly a man motivated by money though with this move.
To be honest though, refs aren't paid a huge amount in comparison to footballers. And in this country you are on a hiding to nothing, grief every single week no matter what. If I was in his position I would do it, one year there will set him up for life!
