Would put money on it to be honest, personally think he’s as good as signed there, wouldn’t be shocked to see it go through as soon as the window opens. City don’t piss about, they want a player then they will go get them ASAP and pay whatever they have to.

Easy to choose us in the summer when there s no football being played but City have been boss this season and looks like the place to be at the moment.

They were linked with him in the Summer and Soton were willing to sell to anybody but LFC but it didn't happen...wouldn't be so sure that its a done deal. Chelsea (league champions at the time) were also in for him and that never happened.

He knows damn well that Pep will probably be there 1-2 more years and Klopp will still be at LFC; I wouldn't dismiss us so easily.

Sadly, looks like it to me too.

Can't blame the lad really if he chooses to go there if given the chance in Jan. Barring something extraordinary he's almost guaranteed a Premier League winners medal if he goes there, that's a big incentive to anyone they try to sign in Jan.

City were on the back of what was a bad campaign for them, they were poor for large parts and nobody really knew what to expect from them but this season they are arguably one of the best teams the league has ever had, going strong in the Champions League too. They've become a much more attractive proposition than what they were back in the summer. With no real leader at the back, it could be sold to him very well that he can be the star man of that defence and become part of the teams spine, a team that is dominating this season. Not to mention they can throw whatever money they want at him.

Chelsea were hardly pulling up roots in the summer though. Selling off Matic, bringing in Drinkwater, trying to bring in Barkley, fall out with Costa. IMO, signs that not all was well. There was also some talk of Conte going.

We will see, just IMO he is City's to lose.

Agree.  It's going to be nearly impossible to compete with City for targets.  Pep is a more attractive manager as he wins trophies everywhere he goes.  City are easily the best team in England, and arguably the best team in Europe.  City also have silly oil money and will pay whatever it takes to get the players the manager wants.  Sadly, I think City are about to sign VVD and Sanchez, which will make the ridiculously good....

Will be interesting to see how James Pearce works a "Liverpool are willing to wait" narrative into things if it continues to look like City are closing on him.

If Van Dijk is no long possible, leaving behind the debate as to how ridiculous it is we got to this, you'd expect any sensible and ambitious club to have seen this coming a mile off and have alternatives...

Other than that one Simon Hughes link to the Basel lad, another we are 'willing to wait' for, theres been next to f**k all talk of anyone but Van Dijk since May.

We couldn’t bring him in when there were no other offers on the table, with City going after him, I highly doubt we have a chance. Like someone else said, City asee someone they want, they won’t hesitate to spend what it takes. We don’t operate that way.

Makes you wonder what the hell we were playing at in the summer. Too busy apologizing. Embarrassing.

I suppose but it begs the question on City's ambition;  they failed to sign him when Soton basically said anybody but LFC....City never even put in a bid.

Makes you wonder what happens behind the scenes.

I've stayed silent on him as I know very little of VVD having seen so little of him at Southampton in the Premier League. That said, I very much doubt he's a 'Championship' player. To be honest with you I just wish Carra would stop making these cheap tabloidesque, sensationalised soundbites. But then again, he chose to make his bed with Sly Sports so what more would you expect from him these days? Compare him to Gerrard's more balanced, respectful diplomatic outlook on the game with BT Sport and you realise there's a gulf in quality between the two when it comes to studio talk.

To be honest, I think he's a bit of a cheap pundit is Carra.

Carragher never called him a Championship player. He said he's playing more like a Championship player than a Champions League player.

They hesitated in the summer when sources close to Man City said they didn't want to spend what Southampton were asking for.

Or they didn’t really want him because they were flush at CB and only were trying to drive up the price for us.

Ah yeah I know that....was pointing out the idea that the last time City tried nothing happened to those that say whatever City wants the will spend whatever it takes and always get what they want.

They were after Jonny Evans though and if they didn't want or need him in the summer then the same would surely apply now?

Yeah them built bridges have really been worth it. We can think when he's lining up for City and lifting the Premier League, "yeah, we done well building them bridges, boss job lads!"

What's a bit worse is that there will be reports saying we are waiting for encouragement from Saints to open talks, or some crap like that. Whilst City just get on, chuck in the asking price and get him tied down to a 5 year deal at 250-300k a week.
