      Mohamed Salah (AS Roma)
      May 09, 2017 01:00:40 pm
Liverpool eye Roma's Salah after moving on from Brandt
The Reds have long been an admirer of the Egypt international while they continue to hold an interest in Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Liverpool are looking into a number of wide options as Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt is unwilling to risk his appearances diminishing next season.

The 21-year-old, who has been scouted by the club for years and was pursued in January as well as ahead of this summer, is targeting a place in Germany’s squad for the 2018 World Cup.

He does not want to jeopardise his chances of making the cut by supplementing rather than assuming a starring role in Liverpool’s attack.

With Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho proving how destructive they can be in tandem, Brandt knows regular run-outs from the off would not be guaranteed if he transferred to Anfield as he adapts to a new country and league.

"If you make the move, there is no guarantee that you'll play,” he told Focus on his future.

“I believe that it's important that I get a lot of games next season, and that is a given here at Leverkusen."

One of the candidates Liverpool are looking into to enhance their frontline is Roma’s Mohamed Salah.

The Reds have been long-term admirers of the Egypt international, who can operate across the forward line as well as an attacking midfielder.

The Merseysiders initially tried to recruit Salah in January 2014, having opened talks with Basel and the player in October the previous year.

The 24-year-old was eager to make the switch, but Liverpool had multiple offers rejected by the Swiss club, before a phone call from Jose Mourinho convinced him to choose Chelsea instead.

His £11 million transfer to Stamford Bridge ultimately proved unsuccessful before loan spells followed at Fiorentina and Roma, the latter making the transfer permanent last August.

He has been a revelation at the Stadio Olimipico, where he is the only player to reach double figures in goals (13) and assists (10) this term.

Salah, who along with Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan was the subject of a recent threat from Lazio fans , has a contract until 2019.

There are currently no discussions to extend that deal with Roma having more pressing issues at hand, although they would not be receptive to losing such an influential player - certainly not cheaply.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is of interest to Liverpool given his ability to cover a number of positions, is understood to be a more likely addition at present.

The 23-year-old will entire the final 12 months of his agreement with Arsenal this summer and the Reds are willing to pay in the region of £20m to land the England international.

Does any other club have as many long term links to players without actually buying them?

One player that can rival Mane in pace. I can't even imagine if we had these two running down either wing.

Probably take Salah over Ox to be honest.

Would be a big yes from me, his pace is something we really need. We look our best when our wide player (Mane) gets out wide to create space on the inside for others or where he is running in behind their fullbacks.

He may not start but as we will have European football to compete in next season, he would be a quality asset to have on the bench or starting every other game.

Don't do it! Keita would be a magnificent signing, exactly what we need imo.

Did he? I thought he wanted to join us but we were F***ing about with Basel over the transfer fee for the whole of January and then Chelsea just went in and paid the asking fee and got him?

Haven't watched him play in Serie A at all but 32 goals in the last two seasons is pretty decent.

Agreed a fee didn't we but then tried backtracking to get a lower one? Or was that another player?

Cant remember but it might have been Willian.

I'm sure it happened in reverse for Nuri Sahin. Looked like he was Arsenals then suddenly we signed him.

It happened with Salah too so then Chelsea swooped in and offered more than the asking price to get it done quickly.

“Liverpool had wanted me for a number of months. They had opened talks in October 2013,” Salah explained in 2016.

“Negotiations took a long time, because Basel rejected more than one offer. They felt the transfer fee was not that high.

“I was waiting for Liverpool because I really like Liverpool. I was eager to join them. But then I received a phone call from Mourinho and that changed everything.”

If the club doesn't offer enough money to the selling club, there's nothing the player can do.

It's embarrassing that we were negotiating for 2-3 months and still offered less than what Basel were asking for, especially when they only wanted like 9m or so :D.

Especially considering he was sold for £12m. I could perhaps understand if we were talking about £40m, but £12m?! Makes us look like Fulham or whatever.

Chelsea paid over the asking price too didn't they? Just to rub salt into the wound.
