LFC to launch new supporter liaison and engagement process

Liverpool FC is set to introduce a new way of working with supporters following a comprehensive consultation programme with Liverpool fans.

More than 10,000 Reds have had their say in the single biggest piece of supporter research ever carried out by the club, with the intention of informing and improving interaction between LFC and its followers at all levels.

Nine months ago, Liverpool teamed up with Populus, a highly respected, independent, leading research agency who have worked across football and sport for many years, acting on behalf of various industry leaders including the Premier League.

Populus launched the club’s research programme last December with the primary aim of assessing what is working well with supporter liaison and identifying the big issues that are important to fans. From the outset, there was a commitment to develop an open dialogue with supporters which will be built upon in accordance with the various outcomes of the survey.

Populus split the research programme into three areas. Firstly, they conducted more than 40 in-depth interviews with fans, supporter groups including Spirit of Shankly, Spion Kop and the Liverpool FC Supporters’ Committee, key media commentators, politicians, Liverpool city influencers, senior club officials and other groups and individuals within football.

The second area of focus centred on fans being asked their opinions about how LFC can better understand the issues that affect them, how they currently engage with the club and how this process can be enhanced. More than 10,000 supporters replied to the online questionnaire to give their views – a significant and hugely welcome input for which the club is extremely appreciative.

Lastly, they carried out extensive desk research in football and other sports to identify best practice fan liaison models that deliver direct, open and transparent engagement with supporters.

Populus have now collated the huge number of responses from supporters and have been analysing these in great detail to ensure the views and issues from local fans and from fans around the world have been captured.

As a result of the in-depth interviews and the fan survey, four strategic issues have been raised by fans that are most important to them: ticket availability, ticket prices, stadium-related issues and local supporter engagement.

The comprehensive research programme is now drawing to a conclusion and the full results and analysis have been digested and discussed by the club. The club have now decided on a new fan liaison model, closely supported by Populus, and this will be discussed at the next Liverpool FC Supporters’ Committee meeting this weekend (Saturday May 20).

Susan Black, communications director at LFC, said: “This is a hugely important programme for the club and the biggest supporter research we’ve ever carried out.

“We’ve learned a lot along the way and would like to thank everyone who helped us with this valuable research, including the 10,000 fans who completed the survey and those who took time out to be interviewed by Populus.

“Based on the extensive research, a new fan liaison and engagement model will be introduced which we believe is a stronger and more transparent model that will see more authentic fan engagement through direct as well as structured channels and forums.

“This will ensure we are discussing the issues that matter to most of our supporters in an open and transparent way. In keeping with that objective, we have also created a new liaison and engagement model that will allow fans to work with the club more effectively.

“We will be presenting the key findings, the new supporter liaison and engagement model and how this will operate on a day-to-day basis to the LFC Supporters’ Committee this Saturday. We will then share this information with supporters via our website and social media channels so they know how they can get involved.”

My season ticket has stayed the same price for next season which surprised me actually, was thinking it would have gone up with the new stand to pay for, so I'm quite happy.

Same here, I take it that'll be the price category that's just under £700.

How many of these initiatives have been put in place now :D

Jokes aside though this can only be a good thing, so long as the feedback is genuinely taken on board.

Yes, its easy to be cynical about things like this, but it's an opportunity fans should embrace, I reckon.  Our voice is too often overlooked completely by clubs; and I'm not just referring to Liverpool.

Tony Barrett takes full-time role at Liverpool as club look to improve fan interaction

Former ECHO reporter will chair five new fan forums as part of supporter engagement overhaul

Tony Barrett will lead Liverpool’s drive to give supporters a greater voice as part of an overhaul of how the club communicates with fans.

The Reds have today announced a new supporter engagement model to address the findings of a global independent research programme commissioned by the club last year.

As a result, Barrett will become Liverpool’s Head of Club and Supporter Liaison with the Reds keen to utilise social media platforms to increase interaction with their fanbase.

The ECHO’s former Liverpool correspondent, later of The Times and currently Joe.co.uk, will begin his new role next month.

He will chair, co-ordinate and manage five new fan forums as well as establish an ongoing dialogue with supporters and supporter groups on a more informal basis through social media to help understand key issues more immediately.

Four new fan forums will be created to focus on issues highlighted by fans during the research, which was undertaken by research specialists Populus last autumn.

These will centre on ticket availability, ticket prices, the stadium and local supporter engagement. A fifth forum, on equality and diversity, will also be created.

Each of the fan forums will be made up of between 8-12 supporters with one seat being reserved for the Liverpool Supporters Trust and one seat for a member of the existing Supporters Committee.

Liverpool will be launching a new campaign in the coming weeks to encourage supporters to register their interest to be selected at random to participate in one of the fan forums.

There will also be an annual fan summit hosted by Reds new chief executive Peter Moore. Club directors, senior officials and supporters who are members of the fan forums will be invited to attend the annual summit to be held at Anfield, either in person or via video call facilities.

Karen Gill, Bill Shankly’s granddaughter and honorary president of the Supporters Committee, has also been invited, with the forums running throughout next season.

Liverpool will also be engaging with other groups such as LDSA and Official LFC Supporters Clubs to ensure their voice is also heard.

The club’s dedicated Fan Services Team based at Anfield will continue to be available for supporters who have more immediate issues.

All supporters will be able to keep track of what is discussed in the fan forums by visiting the club’s website and social media platforms, where all discussion points from the meeting will be published after every forum.

Susan Black, Director of Communications at Liverpool FC, said: “This extensive independent research programme took nine months during which time Populus engaged with fans at home and around the world in order to build a robust picture of what the issues are that matter.

“They also gathered opinions on how fans want us to engage with them.

This new engagement model will give us a more open and robust platform to engage with more of our supporters on more of the issues that matter to them.

“Tony will drive this for the club and we are delighted that he will be joining us.”

More than 10,000 supporters gave feedback through a questionnaire while research agency Populus also conducted 40 in-depth interviews with fans, supporter groups including Spirit of Shankly, Spion Kop and the LFC Supporters Committee, members of the media, politicians and club officials.

Maybe they should be worried more about the winning trophies process..I'm sure that will keep the fans 'engaged'.

      Well in Tony.

Only fear would be that it's something they're doing for show.

The hope is that they actually want to hear a lot more local voice as, for me, the focus has been leaning too far towards tourism for too long. Don't get me wrong, the worldwide fanbase is great and is a huge part of this club but there's a core element that needs a lot more love from the club and to be fair to FSG it's been getting slightly better. Just hope it's not something they're doing to tide that local voice over.

Yeah that's fair mate, I share the same worry and when I first heard about the process it's exactly what I assumed. Employing Tony moves it a step away from that in my opinion.

This is an excellent move. Clubs don't do this and advertise it if they don't intend to genuinely make improvements.

Their hiring of Barrett only solidifies their commitment and I couldn't think of someone in a better position to communicate with fans.

Hopefully people can FINALLY move on from their myth that the "Yanks are beefing us up to make a nice profit". They're in this for the long haul.

Got to meet one of the Australian reps from Populous last year and they were F***ing impressive.
