Peter Moore: Liverpool chief executive on Jürgen Klopp, transfers and pub chat

New Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore says he has been eavesdropping on fans' pub conversations to get their views on the club - before they recognise him.

The Liverpool-born 62-year-old, a former EA Sports executive, starts his new role on Thursday, succeeding Ian Ayre, who left in February after 10 years at the club.

"I wandered down the road looking for a pint on Sunday and I just sat in the pub listening to three guys on the next table dissecting every position for 45 minutes. It was compelling," he said.

"They didn't have a clue who I was."

But Moore told BBC Sport any transfer targets the fans had in mind would be unlikely to influence the club's policy as those responsible for buying players - manager Jürgen Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards - were "trusted implicitly".

"There's two Peter Moores," he said. "There's the fan who has his own opinions about what needs to happen and that Peter Moore stays in a box somewhere.

"And then there's the Peter Moore that trusts implicitly what Michael Edwards and Jürgen Klopp and their staff are doing right now. We've got that well under control."

      Liverpool 'part of my DNA'

Liverpool-born Moore, who is currently based in the United States, will move back to the city this month to take up his new role.

He has 40 years of experience working for large companies and has held various positions at Electronic Arts over the past 10 years.

But Moore still remembers his first game in 1959 and says he can empathise with those who go to Anfield.

"It's part of my DNA. I can still feel being on The Kop in the old days and moving 15 steps up and down depending on what was going on on the pitch.

"We're in this together, we are a collective. The socialist beliefs that are core to this club all pulling together here. It's very unique and very different.

"If you grew up here in the sixties as a kid and a family these were tough times. There were very few things you had to hang on to or look forward to - for all of us it was three o'clock on a Saturday afternoon at Anfield."

Moore says fans will drive his decision-making.

"When I think about what we need to do here there's a mentality that I have that I will call fan first, which is when we make decisions 'what does this mean for the fan?'" he said.

For Moore, fans are not limited to those attending matches, but those global fans "sitting at 4am in San Francisco with my red shirt on and living and dying with every kick from 5,200 miles away".

How much will Liverpool spend this summer?

Liverpool have already begun their transfer business, agreeing to sign 19-year-old Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke for a fee of around £3m.

But Moore would not be drawn on the club's spending plans for this transfer window:

"Who do we need to buy? That's not how it works around here.

"There's a constant process of identifying talent, looking at the opportunities, and like any good business what you do is you say 'we've got a weakness here or we need to invest there build for the future'."

Will being in Champions League again help?

Liverpool secured their return to Champions League football for the 2017-18 season with victory over Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.

Klopp's side finished fourth in the final Premier League table and will have to negotiate Champions League qualifying at the start of next season.

"We have deserved to get back and that is building a better platform for us to be more attractive to players," said Moore.

"It's obviously worth money, and that's public, but we become more of an attractive club again.

"Players who want to play in Champions League - let's not forget this is a World Cup season at the end of next year and players want their national team managers to see them on the big stages."

Now that all the pieces of the boardroom jigsaw are in place , are they now going to fill in the pieces we need to build our squad?, this of course will include the quality we will need for the title challenge ahead and with it progression in the CL,

No excuses now, we are now dining at the top table so should be bringing in those to keep us there, we do have the nucleus of a very good side, adding quality will make us even better, that is key, last season we were short on numbers and quality, we got away with it, just, next season we simply cannot afford to just make do, so for all Peter Moores rumblings, he has to realise what we need, he's saying all the right things and sounds as tho he does have the club at heart, so ok Peter prove to us that you mean business, make us trust you like we trusted Peter Robinson all those years ago,

He says that those trusted implicitly with transfers, Klopp & Edwards , well id like to fookin think so, but does that mean the TC have no say whatsoever ? again, I hope so, and does 'Sporting Director' actually mean Director of football ?

Answers on a postcard please !

Look, I do like the feel of things atm, I will feel a lot better when the 'big signings' arrive, I know Rome wasn't built on a sunny afternoon and all that, but we've been waiting almost 8 yrs to dine at the top table and now that we are there I want us to stay, and not be a one season flash in the pan wonder,

It is a actual fact that financially we cannot hope to compete with Abu Dhabi utd, or Chavplastique, or even the Moaneyones Mutants, but its not all about the dick swinging is it ?

But we do need to spend money to keep us at the top table, for the last few seasons FSG have spent little in relative terms, now is the time to dig deep, a couple of windows spending big should be enough to bring in the quality for sustaining a challenge for top honours, starting this summer, guess we'll have to wait and see what occurs.

      welcome to Liverpool Fc Peter

I don't think the "TC" has existed since Brendan left.

Pretty much Jürgen and Edwards coming up with what they need and tasking the work to the staff.

Fairy muff mate,  so then who has overall say so on who comes in or not,  pubic Ayre has been gone since Feb, surely decisions like transfers will be made by some sort of authority other than Jürgen and Edwards, no?

I would think that Edwards and Jürgen are the two that make the decisions, they have a budget, can't think of why it has to be anybody else.

Although he's a lfc fan, I duuno about this guy, things might change with who we sign, or more importantly, who we dont.
Everyone knows that we  (hopefully), have a lot more games now, and we scraped by, by the skin of our teeth with the games we had. We also know. it should not have been like that, and we lacked  quality in depth in the squad, with injuries etc., we say bring in the 'younguns', and yes thats how it should be if they're good enough, but not en-block, we used to introduce youngsters into the team one or two at a time, and let them learn, I remember SG's first introduction by GH, he came into established team and shone.  It's great that jk has faith in everyone, but we still need the young auld arses who has seen this before.
I wish him good luck, give JK the tools to put us back where we belong,   then I'm onboard

I don't think he is going to have anything to do with transfers personally....Klopp & Edwards will be the drivers. This guy is the big picture where Hogan, Edwards, Klopp & other departments will report to and then he will report to FSG.

This topic should be under the FSG thread.
Peter Moore is their mouthpiece and like any executive will mouthe company policy in whichever office he finds himself.

As previously posted following the appointment as CEO and his subsequent lengthy statement in the Guardian was no more than an opportunity to re-confirm that company policy of not keeping up with our rivals would continue unabated; amongst the usual horseshit the premise was referred to at three times.

stuey as he has been appointed before the transfer window officially opens we will soon be able to tell if he has really got L.F.C. blood in his veins or Fenway blood.Time will tell.

Nothing has occurred matey that indicates there will be any noticeable change in FSG's company procedure, Moore is an FSG employee and not toeing the line means the Situations Vacant column looms on the horizon.

I fully understand who pays his salary but I think you are missing the point of my post.He has been quoted as saying he has been listening to 3 Liverpool supporters in the ale house. If he has really listened to them then he will open the cheque book in this transfer window.

      Stu.

Ayres had his own thread  .... as an FSG employee and before the takeover by them.

It will be interesting to see how Moores own connection to the club as a supporter from a kid is going to work within his employment .
