Should The Transfer Window Close Before The League Starts?
      Jul 13, 2017 04:10:12 pm
Many of us are getting twitchy regarding the lack of signings with the season only a few weeks away and I'm wondering if the window closed the day before the league season started would it force clubs hands to get their business done earlier?

If we're going to have a transfer window, and that's a debate in itself, I think it should close before the season starts and you register your squad from then.

      Thoughts?

100% mate, I doubt you'll get many arguments, don't understand why it doesn't, bloody stupid.

Loans would be fine to continue for a couple of weeks after it shuts so then those which you aren't sure if you can shift or buy leaves an option but purchases should all be completed before a competitive game takes place in the league.

      Indeed.

The window closes almost three weeks after the first League game this season.

Some might argue that it could encourage panic buying but for me it would focus a clubs mind on who and what they need and try and get the players in.

Jürgen spoke at the end of the season about most of the ground work being done regarding who we need this summer but as time goes on you begin to wonder if we only done ground work on single targets for a position and also without exploring how possible it is to buy those targets.

That would demand more uniformity, both nationally and internationally, than is not probably possible Si but, as an ideal, I have no objections. 😎

However... In my humble, "uniformity" is easier achieved by doing away with windows all together but..

As windows were brought in to offer some stability on enforceable contracts [the alternative being players just F***ing off after working their notice], that ain't happening either.

I guess we are stuck til after Brexit.  😄

I agree in an ideal world the window wouldn't exist and you could buy and sell players as required.

Fair point on the need for uniformity around the leagues but you could possibly have it that you could only buy players up to the start of your own domestic season but could sell players after that if you choose.

Becomes too much of a distraction at the start of the season, not to mention it can mess you up if you end up getting a cup tied player as result of a qualifier.

I would argue for scrapping the January window as well.

I'm wondering if it matters. The window could be open from now until doomsday and we'd still be waiting for a bid to be put in for one of our primary targets.

Absolutely. Why not start it as soon as the season ends and then close it right before the season starts.

The transfer windows did not exist years ago and clubs could buy and sell players any time.If a club was involved in promotion/relegation then they could not play the players against teams that the result could affect.Another point is there were no agents around to rip the clubs off in those days. And some say they were the bad old days.

So if Coutinho tore his ACL a week into the new season we would have to just deal with it and wait until January to find someone to replace him?

What do we do if he tears it 6 weeks into the season?

That is why prudent clubs have a squad situation to cover all events. Also as has been noted on this forum we have lacked quantity and quality in our squads in recent seasons.

Well if we somehow manage to obtain Keita I would think that a mid-field of:

Keita, Coutinho, Lallana, Henderson, Can, Gini, and Grujic would be a sufficient mix of both quality and quantity.

Conquering Europe with Migs in goal would definitely be an accomplishment.

The only thing wrong with the transfer window is the incessant freaking rumors that we can't seem to get enough of 😜
