I occasionally use TunnelBear (which features no.1 on that TechRadar list of free VPNs). Free and very easy to use. 500mb limit on the free version.
If you want to go for a more complete service you'll need to pay.
Suggest reading this link, offers a comprehensive guide to paid VPN's as well as some useful information on why you'd use them and the privacy/security issues surrounding it.http://uk.pcmag.com/software/138/guide/the-best-vpn-services-of-2017
A word on HMA, I've seen several people complain that after signing up for the free trial they are billed automatically at the end, which is an annoyingly common business practice nowadays, so just keep an eye for that if you do use them.
*edit* - also perhaps worth reading is this: https://invisibler.com/lulzsec-and-hidemyass/
