Hearing he was different class today. Still not been able to catch any of the pre season games so not seen him play.

He was...totally bossed it on/off the ball contributed to both goals and could have been 2 more if they were finished.

No disrespect to the midfielders at the club who all had probably their best individual seasons last year but this guy looks a class above.

Saying that, it was a pre-season match against Blackburn so I’m trying not to get to carried away.

Despite all the buzz and excitement around new transfers, I still think this is the guy I’m most excited about. He just has that air of confidence when he is on the ball, head up and looking to take on players. Very different to what we currently have in midfield but I think he is really going to bring the best out in the other boys.

This guy's amazing. Fits our system perfectly. He's so good going forward but also tracks backs very well to recover possession. We will be so defensively sound next season with Keita tracking back harassing players only to be met by an awaiting Fabinho to take the ball away and start the counter.

Naby Keïta: ‘As a child, I played in the streets wearing a Liverpool shirt’

The midfielder idolised Steven Gerrard while growing up in Guinea – now he has taken on his No8 shirt and has made an immediate impact

      Fri 20 Jul 2018 22.31 BST
Last modified on Fri 20 Jul 2018 22.41 BST

Ewood Park on Thursday night and it is not only updates on Alisson’s world-record move to Anfield that is enthralling thousands of Liverpool fans in the Darwen End stand. The second-half performance of Naby KeĂŻta against Blackburn Rovers suggests that for Liverpool and JĂŒrgen Klopp here is another high-profile transfer worth the wait.

Yes, it was a pre-season friendly against Championship opposition and judgment should be reserved. But early impressions count. Within minutes of his introduction the captain of Guinea freed Daniel Sturridge behind the Blackburn defence with a slide-rule, diagonal pass. His composure on the ball, distribution and movement impressed throughout.

One year after agreeing a complex deal with RB Leipzig for the midfielder, one that eventually rose to ÂŁ52.75m, Liverpool are discovering why the 23-year-old’s father called his son Deco when they played football on the streets of Conakry, the capital of Guinea. In KeĂŻta’s eyes he was a Steven Gerrard or AndrĂ©s Iniesta. Klopp will be beside himself if he has landed a combination of the two.

“Since I signed for Liverpool my dad has spoken to me a lot about how much he loved them,” says Keïta. “As a kid we used to play in the streets wearing a Liverpool shirt. He had that love of Liverpool back then when I was 11 or 12 years old. Because I’m a midfielder and Steven Gerrard was always the boss of the team I couldn’t be anyone else but Steven Gerrard when I played.

“My overall favourite player would be Iniesta. It is his final ball, obviously, his skill and his ability. I know he is not known for his aggression but that is something I have added to my game, even if it is not one of his traits. I think as a midfielder you need to have that aggression as part of your game. But I always admired Deco too. It was funny because my dad loved Deco as a player. He started calling me Deco as a nickname around the house.”

“Eight was always the number I liked going back to my childhood,” says the Guinea international. “It’s also the number my dad wore when he played football so it’s special to me. He wasn’t fortunate enough to play professionally but he did play at a decent level for an amateur team in Conakry. I am aware that it’s a big number here at Liverpool and I am very excited to wear it. I know it was Steven’s number but I am not going to put any extra pressure on myself. What is more important is contributing for this team than the number on your back.

“I didn’t know that Steven would be at Melwood so it was a big shock and exciting to be presented with the shirt by him. Steven said: ‘Everyone will be here for you and help you to develop.’ I am here to learn and grow as a player.”

Barcelona and Bayern Munich rivalled Liverpool for KeĂŻta’s signature last summer but, even before witnessing the team’s exhilarating run to the Champions League final, he was convinced Anfield should be his next step.

“It’s true there were other teams involved like the ones you mention but a big part of my decision was the role of the coach,” he says. “We had good conversations. The words he spoke to me about this project really convinced me. I could see how the club was developing and I spoke at length with Sadio [ManĂ©]. Sadio is like a brother to me. We had nine months together at Salzburg and built up a good rapport. We have been great friends since that time. He told me what a great club this was and how the team was progressing and had great potential.”

Adapting to the physicality of English football should not be an issue for Keïta who, despite his admiration for players such as Iniesta and Deco, readily admits to revelling in the aggressive side of the game. Four red cards last season suggest revelling in it a bit too much. “I think I might have been a bit unfortunate with a couple of those reds,” he says, with a laugh. “The main thing is that they were not for losing my discipline or anything like that. It was just a tackle that was judged to be a little bit stronger than it was.

“I am someone who has a real winning mentality. I have a huge desire to win. That is why I am aggressive in a positive sense on the field. My first mindset when I am out on the field is to defend well and not concede. As a midfielder, when you have sealed things up at the back, my job is to provide the ammunition for the strikers and forwards, to create opportunities for them.

“I am a team player. My long-term aim has always been to play football at the highest level I possibly could for a big club. When that is in your mind you don’t give up, you constantly fight and battle to make that happen. But that isn’t to say that now I am at a massive club I am going to relax and to stop fighting and battling. I am still going to be the same.”

Not watched any of our preseason games so far but I'm not surprised one bit that Naby has been tearing it up already.

He's an absolute Rolls Royce of a player and the whole Premier League will know it by next May.

Another dynamic Display from Keita against Dortmund. For years at LFC we've seemingly had a couple of star players but then struggled to add to them. Keita comes in and will be a the same level as the likes of Salah, Mane & Firmino and VVD. Alison has the potential to do the same. It's very exciting for this club.

      Quote from: Sturridge on Keita

Yeah, I love that guy, I am surprised how good he is. I knew he was good, but I don't really watch German football too often, but seeing him I haven't seen a midfielder like him for a while, he's something different, it's crazy. The things he can do with the ball; he can defend, he can pass, he can dribble, he's fast, he's strong.... he's got everything.

I am excited to see what he does in the PL and CL. I sit next to him in the changing room and we have a lot of banter. My French is terrible but I try my best. Obviously, his English is okay. We share some good times and have a lot of laughs and I like him a lot, he's a good guy.

      Naby Keita
      Profile
The first man to wear the Liverpool number 8 shirt since the retirement of Steven Gerrard, Naby Keita finally arrived at Anfield this summer, for a transfer fee reported to be £52.5m. The Reds thus became the Guinea international’s fourth professional club across four different European countries.

It all started for Keita as a teenager with French second-division club FC Istres, where he impressed despite the club suffering relegation in his one and only season in the first team. A move to Red Bull Salzburg followed, where in two seasons the improving young midfielder won successive Austrian league-and-cup doubles. At the end of that second year, and still only 21, he was named Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Year.

It wasn’t long before another Red Bull-sponsored team, Leipzig, swooped for a player who was starting to alert scouts across Europe. The club was newly promoted to the German Bundesliga, and Keita was to have a huge impact almost immediately. He scored a last-minute winner on his debut, against Borussia Dortmund, and scored eight in total as Leipzig finished second only to Bayern Munich and qualified for the Champions League in their first season in the top flight. JĂŒrgen Klopp and Liverpool were quick to act, meeting the ÂŁ48m release clause in Keita’s contract but with the move agreed – subject to add-ons related to Leipzig’s league finish – for the following summer. That move has now been made, with Keita joining on the back of a season in which he scored 10 goals but received no fewer than four red cards for club and country.

      Tactical analysis
In possession, Keita’s dropping movements into deeper midfield positions can cause the opposition a bunch of problems. If his marker allows him to move to the ball unchallenged, Keita can drive forward from deep, gaining momentum and speed through the heart of the midfield towards the defence. If his marker follows, however, this will then open up central passing lanes for Keita to exploit by breaking lines (above).

The explosive nature and variety of Keita’s movements make it very difficult for opponents to predict his next intention. Simply man-marking him will also prove difficult, as he varies the angles of approach during his dropping movements. If double-marked by opposing defenders, he is more than capable of sustaining possession by assisting the build from deeper areas.

The physical side of Keita’s game is also very impressive. Despite dropping short frequently, he is then able to burst forward away from the ball, helping penetrate the final third and grabbing goals from late runs into the penalty area. His box-to-box runs are consistent and effective, as he also works back tirelessly during moments of defensive transition.

Despite his impressive work rate and penetrative ball-playing abilities, Keita’s aerial control is poor – and this can leave his team vulnerable on the counter-attack. If and when used as a defensive midfielder, long aerial balls from deep will cause issues for a player who stands a relatively diminutive 5ft 8ins. If lacking support, Keita can also lose possession needlessly – particularly when trying to tidy up loose second balls (below).

      Role at new club
Keita is likely to fit into Klopp’s 4-3-3 structure as one of the two more advanced of the three midfielders – as he did in the second half against Borussia Dortmund in their recent friendly (below). His agility and speed both in and out of possession is a wonderful asset for Liverpool’s central midfield. Last season, with Klopp employing various combinations of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum, Liverpool lacked genuine pace from deeper positions in central midfield. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, so impressive towards the end of last season, now a long-term absentee, Keita’s directness in possession will give Liverpool’s direct attacks a welcome impetus.

Not unlike N’Golo Kante at Chelsea, Keita can cover large distances with ease, and rarely shows signs of fatigue when pressing. Perhaps unlike the defensively superb Kante, however, Keita is just as effective in attacking areas, his ability in possession as productive in the final third as it is anywhere else on the pitch. This hasn’t necessarily translated into goals, however – in his combined four seasons with Salzburg and Leipzig, Keita registered more than 10 league goals only once. Liverpool will nevertheless look to the 23-year-old to add firepower to a squad in which only four players – the electric front trio and the departed Philippe Coutinho – netted more than three times last season. The Reds’ intense high press, coupled with Keita’s own ability to drive forward at pace, should guarantee him plenty of chances.

Out of possession, many have noted the new arrival’s poor disciplinary record in his final season with Leipzig. His relative youth and background as a wide attacker have perhaps both contributed to his occasionally reckless tackling in one-on-one situations, although he is likely to be punished less for this in England than on the continent; his foul and card count should drop once he’s settled in the Premier League.
