Time to forget and get that dismal performance at the weekend out of the system.

So we are back rubbing shoulders and feasting with the big boys of Europe.
European nights at Anfield are something special to experience and it seems like ages so time to get revenge against these.

Seems like Klopp has gone with Karius for the CL games.
I would take TAA out of the firing line and although Gomez is not as good a full back he is defensively more disciplined and gives our dodgy back line more height against set pieces.
Moreno was not the worst of our defensive issues but I think Robertson looks better defensively, otherwise why have we splashed £8M if he can't replace Moreno!

Midfield is a real conundrum will Coutinho be brought back and who out of the 3 incumbents deserves to start after the City game?

      Karius
      Gomez
      Matip
      Lovren
      Robertson

      Hendo
      Ox
      Coutinho

      Salah
      Firmino
      Mane

I'd go same team as City except bring in Gomez and Robertson. Not sure if starting Coutinho is the right way to about it.

I fully expect us to come bouncing back in this one, but I really do want to see Robertson instead of Moreno for added defensive abilities. I have no problem with having TAA on the right, he had a sh*t game against Citeh, but so did the whole team.
The only player I want to see dropped is Hendo, replaced by Coutinho, I'd then have Can playing in the "DM" role.

I think we'll win this, especially as Mane will still be pissed off at the Red card and will have a point to prove.

Would probably rest Bobby, Gini and Can for this

      Studge
      Mane - Salah
      Milner - Hendo - Chamberlain
      Robertson - Lovren - Matip - Gomez
      Karius

Subs- Mig, Moreno, Klavan, Grujic, Cou, Solanke, Firmino

F**k me, so we are defending and hoping we can cling onto a draw then are we? That midfield has F**k all creativity in it, Milner and Hendo should never ever be in the midfield at the same time, plus Sturridge can't do 90 minutes, not on his own. The defence is ok though but I'd have TAA instead of Gomez.

If we are playing Coutinho in midfield, I would prefer two midfielders. Can, Hendo or Wijnaldum, but with the #8 a more deeper role than usual ish. More protection = more freedom for our attacking players.

Probably keep Ox on the bench for this. Would be looking for him to be starting in Mane's position when he's suspended. Probably give the defence a shake up and get Coutinho back. Think Klopp's said that Karius is the starting GK for the Champions League as well? (One of the strangest new things I've seen in football that - changing the keeper for CL)

Karius; Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Robertson; Can, Gini, Coutinho; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Migs, Klavan, TAA, Hendo, Woodburn, Sturridge, Ox.

Based on Jürgen's general approach I'd be surprised if Phil starts - I'd play Gini to start with (Can can warm the bench - did you see what I did there ;)?)

Comfortable with Gomez but personally probably keep TAA in and give him chance to get back on the horse......

I get that mate - was more meaning that in the past he's preferred to introduce "injured" players (including Phil in the past I recall) from the bench initially on their rehab.......

Seems to me whatever else he does think of Phil's antics he does believe he's missed at least 3 wk training.....

Seems a question, can our attack, score more than our defence let in. Gone for a score draw in the Prediction League. Although a win for the Reds would be even better.

I hope we F***ing turn up against them this time.

Europa League final was a real tame affair from us and something we should be looking to put right.

Heavy metal football and a big Anfield atmosphere to blow these cu*ts away from thw first whistle will be the perfect hangover cure from F***ing Saturday.

Mane can run his bollocks off because he has a big rest after this one.

Time to re-group and put that nightmare of a game on Saturday in the bin.
Won't be easy but we have to win this game, end of.
They are a decent side with some quality players but we are better.

We need that European Anfield roar to scare the sh*t out of them and take every chance we get.

Maybe, just maybe, this is a game that Coutinho could make the difference in our build up play..dare I say it :f_tongueincheek:

This sh*t still pisses me off every time I think about it :( Every game has been tailor made for him to create and dominate! Imagine not having Gerrard during our CL winning run? How about Barca without Messi? Real without Modric or Arsenal without Sanchez etc. Argh, he just needs to get back playing so I can move on!!!

                   Mignolet
      TAA, Matip, Lovren, Robertson
                Can, Hendo
      Salah   Coutinho    Mane
                  Firmino

Sooner we get out on the pitch and have another game to talk about, the better.
Enough already, if Cou can stand up, start him. If he only last 65mins, OK, sub him off then. But he needs minutes, really want to see him back and playing.
Mignolet gets the nod, cause imho Karius is the worst keeper I've seen between our sticks in manys a day. Gonna have to be a Lazurus like change in form for me to be happy seeing him line out. Nice hair tho.
TAA instead of Gomez cause we're at home and would expect to do more going forward than back. Where the heck is Robertson?! Hopefully available for this one, Moreno gives me  :f_bluelight:
Would leave out Gini cause at home surely we can do with a bit more creativity from the middle (ie. Cou if playing).
      Salah and Mane pick themselves.
Firmino up top cause as usual no other strikers are getting enough game time to know if they can hit a barn door or not.

GREAT to be back in Europe  :kop5cf8koxp6:

Well our build up play on Saturday was bloody awful. No quality quick passes up to the front three whatsoever and as for that free kick Can took! jeez! you can't deny that Coutinho could've quite easily have put that in the top corner with his eyes shut.

Actually wish this was an away game because I feel it would be easier for klopp to reintroduce Phil back into the team.
But it's not and eventually our want-a-way number 10 is gonna have to face the Anfield crowd so what better time than after an utterly dire weekend defeat and under the floodlights of a champions league game.
For me, he starts and we go strong with a duly committed and focused approach of:
      Karius
      Gomez
      Matip
      Lovren
      Robertson
      Hendo
      Gini
      Cou
      Mane
      Firmino
      Salah.

      Bench
      Mig
      Moreno
      Milner
      Klaven
      Can
      Studge
      Grujic

I feel we will bounce back and get a 2-1 win

What season gone, give up now etc? Great that you have such faith in the team ,we need more supporters like you! ;-)

In seriousness we tend to always bounce back after a defeat, the only slump we've ever had under Jürgen was January last season.

I expect us to give Sevilla a real thrashing, proper heavy metal football.

I have this superstition that when I post on the pre-match thread, it is not good for the redmen. But, all these theories founded on strong scientific principles went for a toss last weekend (and, during other games over the past).

So, please allow me to take one for the team and don't punish the King Live Match Starter. If something goes wrong, you can point the finger at me.

                      Karius
      Gomez Matip Lovren Moreno
                   Henderson
         Wijnaldum        Coutinho
      Salah      Firmino        Mane

That would be my starting eleven. Gomez offers that little extra defensive stability. Moreno and Mane can run riot again on our left side. Wijnaldum was taken off early in the City game, so I expect him to start. I actually think Klopp will go with the Henderson, Wijnaldum and Can midfield again, and with good reason given their performances before the City game, but this is how I would start.

With Mane being suspended for the Burnley game, we need other attacking outlets. I'd play both Robertson and Trent-AA in the Burnley game. With Mane out, they're both players that can get in behind the opposition defences or that can put a ball in early. The Burnley game will be similar to the Palace game. Robertson should have a good game again and he'll be able to build on another good performance.

I'll probably be one of the few saying this, but I think it's a good thing that Karius gets a run out in the CL. In a different situation, I'd probably agree with everyone in saying that it's stupid and that you just play your #1 goalkeeper. CL football will be closer to the football that he's used to playing in the Bundesliga, less physical. Giving him a chance to show his worth there might benefit us in the long run if Mignolet collapses again and leaves us with no other choice than playing one of the other goalkeepers. I'd rather have Karius coming in then off the back of a few CL games and with match rhythm, than cold and not having played for weeks. He's young, he needs to play games and I still think he's potentially a very good goalkeeper.

Thanks Redindian, P.monkey is a fan of mine as well, was just pulling my leg :D

I'll do the match thread again then if no one else wants to do it!

That's twice now I've excitedly logged on to see a few minutes of players doing calisthenics and then - *phppppppt* the signal goes out. Probably won't get me a third time. If they could at least show them working with a ball....

I didn't seem to notice Mo Saleh in the warmup, although I might have just missed him....he's not injured is he?

Can't understand all the hard-ons for Karius i dont want him anywhere near our CL side, we're gonna need all our experience players to beat this lot...i would go with this.....

                               Mignolet
          Gomez  Matip Lovren Robertson
                            Henderson
              Wijnaldom       Coutinho
            Salah                                Mane
                               Firmino

Reluctantly put in Henderson,it was a toss off between him and Emre, Hendo only got the nod cos he's skip and more used to playing where he is,
I put in Coutinho cos he is the creator supreme without him especially in Europe we'll be toothless,

Bench; Ward, TAA, Klavan, Can, Ox, Sturridge , Milner

We owe these kunts don't we ?

We really really need to win this, a defeat or draw immediately puts us under immense pressure to get through and probably have to rely on other results, win and we can relax slighty,
Probably the toughest test we'll face being at home against the favs to win the group ,

Very tight affair but i reckon we'll scrape it .....2-1...

Madness from Klopp you have one main keeper, chopping and changing before an already shakey defence only shatters what little confidance the back four have.....madness

It's the one position you normally expect to remain virtually unchanged except for the odd league/FA cup tie.

It is a clear symptom of the fact that we don't have a top goalie, because if we did then we just wouldn't do it.

Still begs the question what the manager thinks we have to gain by rotating the position. Freshness/keeping them keen presumably.

Perhaps he thinks they are on a similar level and that this approach might promote good competition.

They're both pretty sh*te (we have the worst GKs of any team in at least the top 7) so you could argue, why not? You could also argue, as I would, that yes Mignolet is sh*te but not as sh*te as Karius, so we're therefore probably better to stick with him and let that breed whatever consistency and cohesion it may.

It could be, and I obviously do not know this, but it could be that he expects Simon to be gone after this year, not being the level he wants for this title-winning teams. Who to replace him then? Well he bought Karius that year with that in mind, but he had more of an adjustment than expected, and basically did not  perform all that well. But it's not as though he played all that often, and perhaps the coaching has worked with him in the interim and he wants to give him some more chances and see if he could be the new #1 next season, or otherwise determine that he won't be good enough (having been given another chance) and somebody else would be brought in next July (and/or give Ward a chance).

Remember, Karius was voted the 2nd best keeper in the Bundesliga the season leading up to that transfer window. On the surface you'd think he would be a quality goalkeeper, we just haven't seen much evidence of that yet.

Tonight will show what our defence are made of mentally.
We know physically they are below expectation as s unit.
Now we will see how they can respond mentally after the mauling they had from city.
I personally think they are in for a torrid time. I'm not confident they will cope !
I'm sure, individually they are all thinking 'it's the other fellas fault'

Individuals in defence certainly have issues when it comes to the basics of defending however if they are getting zero protection from midfield like in the last game then it doesn't matter who you have defending they will struggle.

Our whole system is set up for winning the midfield battle and giving the opposition minimum time on the ball in midfield but when the likes of Can and Gini go awol and Hendo decides to run around like a headless chicken then any top team will show us up.

Hopefully a kick up the arse and benchings will have sorted them out.

I'm so jacked for this game. I'm throwing on the Carragher and putting a huge chip on my shoulder before heading to a dive bar with a few of my friends around 1 PM my time to get the booze in me. The game starts at 2:30 local time and I'll be right and prime to catch an ass whoopin as I cant fight at all. Most likely no one will give a sh*t about some asshole wearing a collared football jersey due to the fact that I live in small town VA. Therefore me and the boys will get to watch the game in peace.

Anyways, I want to see our best team on the pitch for this one, but with Mo sick who knows if he can even play? Anyways.....

                                           Karius

                              Matip                   Lovern

         Gomez                                                    Roberston

              Can                      Hendo                   Couthino

                  Salah                                Mane

                                          Firmino

With Mo being sick maybe we move Mane on the right and Phil on the left. If that's the case I almost want to see the Ox pop in to the midfield. Gini needs a rest and this is why we got the Ox, aint it? Lets go Redmen, give em the full pecker. 3-1 FTW

A good start sets the tone for the group, and doesn't leave us playing catch up.  You really have to win the home games and we are more than capable of beating anyone on our day.

Phil will be involved I assume, just not sure if its from the start.

That's twice now I've excitedly logged on to see a few minutes of players doing calisthenics and then - *phppppppt* the signal goes out. Probably won't get me a third time. If they could at least show them working with a ball....

They wont ever show any in depth training mate.
If you and me can watch it so can the opposition

Individuals in defence certainly have issues when it comes to the basics of defending however if they are getting zero protection from midfield like in the last game then it doesn't matter who you have defending they will struggle.

Our whole system is set up for winning the midfield battle and giving the opposition minimum time on the ball in midfield but when the likes of Can and Gini go awol and Hendo decides to run around like a headless chicken then any top team will show us up.

Hopefully a kick up the arse and benchings will have sorted them out.

Personally, I would bench them but perhaps not for this game. For some reason, Klopp doesn't like to change things up. It's almost like doing them same thing expecting a different result. Personally, it is about time other players (such as Gruijic) are given a more extended time in our midfield. They can't surely do worse than the three stooges we have in there at the moment. I am so pissed with these idiots in the midfield.

Not in depth, I know we are not going to get a sneak peek at team tactics. But at least show us a 6v4 possession in a square drill for a few minutes, something that shows the skills of the players - or a simple finishing drill. Has to be something other than warmup they can show us.

      I'd go with
      ---------------Karius--------------
      Gomez--Matip--Lovren--Robertson
      ------------Henderson-------------
      --------Can---------Coutinho------
      Salah-------Firmino---------Mane

Karius- Needs a chance to prove himself regularly, hasn't done bad this season when called upon in preseason and vs arsenal. I think a young keeper with potential is worth the gamble over a keeper in their prime doing below average.

Gomez- TAA needs to be rotated with Joe, especially after being gang raped by 11 City players on Saturday.

Matip- Im still to be overly convinced by him because he hasn't done amazing but he is still our best CB.

Lovren- Better than Klavan. That's literally the only reason why.

Henderson- Settles us well and ticks us over nicely.

Can- When he has a good game he's our best CM. Playing him will only bring more of that out of him. Untouchable when he's on form and adds muscle to our lightweight team.

Coutinho- Our best player (just over Mane) and why refuse to sell a player and then refuse to play him? He isn't unfit, he had preseason, he had a game with brasil and has had 10 days training. He is going to be a big player for us this season, same affect as suarez the year before he left.

Mane- Picks himself, will destroy teams in the champions league that try and come out and play football.

Firmino- Love him. Makes our system so formidable when he's on his game.

Salah- Will be a force in the champions league for us because of his experience in there.

Subs to be used- Ox, Sturridge and a youngster later on.

I'm so jacked for this game. I'm throwing on the Carragher and putting a huge chip on my shoulder before heading to a dive bar with a few of my friends around 1 PM my time to get the booze in me. The game starts at 2:30 local time and I'll be right and prime to catch an ass whoopin as I cant fight at all. Most likely no one will give a sh*t about some asshole wearing a collared football jersey due to the fact that I live in small town VA. Therefore me and the boys will get to watch the game in peace.

Anyways, I want to see our best team on the pitch for this one, but with Mo sick who knows if he can even play? Anyways.....

                                           Karius

                              Matip                   Lovern

         Gomez                                                    Roberston

              Can                      Hendo                   Couthino

                  Salah                                Mane

                                          Firmino

With Mo being sick maybe we move Mane on the right and Phil on the left. If that's the case I almost want to see the Ox pop in to the midfield. Gini needs a rest and this is why we got the Ox, aint it? Lets go Redmen, give em the full pecker. 3-1 FTW

      YNWA boys

Forgive the off-topic story - but one of my most memorable experiences of trying to watch football in a public place in the U.S. came in Winchester, Virginia in about 2001. I moved on a Saturday and we wouldn't get TV services until the following Monday. The  U.S. MNT had a World Cup qualifier on the Sunday so I had been asking if there was a sports bar in this relatively small town (but bigger than Appamattox). I was given an address and I walked into this sleepy pub, with just two or three 2 o'clock drinkers not really watching one of the 2 or 3 TVs (it was not a sports bar per se). I asked if I could get the game on and the waitress obliged. I think I'm in the clear and watching the first few minutes of the game.

Then I hear some very loud voices approaching and the door bursts open, brilliant sunlight streaming in. I look over and this hulking figure of a man stands, a dark figure with the sun at his back and a giant golden beard stretching down in front of his orange hunting coveralls. He breaks off his spirited monologue in mid-sentence, immediately casting eyes on the small TV set with the game on it. After the briefest pause he starts in with a redneck accent (different than Southern - they are two different things) and loud, combative voice "Soccer?!?! Who the haaaaaillllll's watchin' soccer?!?!?" I instinctively slouched down in my booth but the waitress cheerfully replies "Why, this nice man right here." as she motions to me.

"You're not from around here are you?" - the man guffawed, followed by "We don't watch soccer in here. Get some NASCAR on that TV!!!"

The lady looked at me sheepishly and I motioned it was OK as I moved to a remote corner of the place and a set that actually was more in place for the kitchen help, both of whom were Spanish-speaking men. The waitress put the game on that set and I stood on the entrance to the galley, sipping my drink and watching the game (to a backdrop of auto racing sound) with my two new amigos.

Things have gotten better re that in my lifetime, thankfully. Here's hoping for the chance to watch a world-correcting LFC win today.

If memory serves me well, Emre Can absolutely bossed that game.

I'd like to see Borini back here....always good for a laugh!

Not overly familiar with Sevilla, but with players like N'Zonzi (very underrated #6 imo) and Banaga/Ganso, I suspect they will shift the ball around really well and probably look to dominate the midfield, but I suspect our pressing will nullify that! And with Jesus, Correa and Ben Yedder, they have strength, skill and movement, but again, if our pressing forces them to defend deep, are they really such a threat on the counter? I am not sure tbh.

Just saw that its likely Karius will start. Don't think he's looked confident recently, so pretty surprised. You have to assume Jürgen knows what he's doing, just hope he doesn't drop a clanger in our first CL match in quite a while. Fingers crossed he'll do OK, would imagine he could use the confidence boost of a good performance, cause he's languishing at the moment.

Had a decent preseason and kept a clean sheet against Arsenal (yeah they were poor but a clean sheets a clean sheet)

I really want him to do well, partly cause as a keeper I've given up backing Mignolet and partly because I have a man crush on Dream boa...ahem Karius.

Didn't have many shots against him, and also couple of times he was a bit slow with ball at feet and nearly got robbed.
But yea, no doubt his hair is A1.

Have been working late this week, hopefully I'll be able to leave early today and watch the game. Think we'll win 2-1 but hopefully it'll be a comfortable 2-0 or 3-1.

      Come on you Redmen!

Well I had a good feeling about the city game pre kick off, and we know what happened there.
Today I feel very unsure about tonight's game, so perhaps that's a good omen !
