Liverpool agree deal to sign Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on January 1, 2018.

The Netherlands international will be assigned squad number four, upon his arrival at Liverpool.

I’m as certain as I’ve been over any signing in the last 20 years that - injury permitting - this lad will go on to be a stalwart, a star and potentially a legend.

I watched enough of him over a couple seasons at Celtic - my eldest and the wife have season tickets - to recognise absolute quality.

Difficult one with my local club (and 2nd favourite team) being Celtic. Was clear to see his abilities then and could have been picked up at a fraction of the price a few years back. Shame about the attitude towards Scottish football and the fact that people ignore clear talent because teams can’t afford to spend tens of millions.

Anyway, the money isn’t coming out of my pocket so welcome to the club Virgil.
