Lovern has shocked me. I just knew he would shrivele up and die once VVD came on. I thought there is no way this dude can deal with the competition. I am wrong, at least up to this point anyway. VVD has improved our back line in more ways than one. I hope Matip gets sit for a while and these two mesh.

Kudos to VVD for being the leader he was advertised to be and to Lovern for handling his business like a professional and playing well these past few weeks.

Aye fully agree mate. The biggest thing VVD has brought to us for me is leadership. He's constantly organizing, shouting and has a calming presence. It's improved confidence across the back, 75m well worth it imo.

Oh and he's not a bad defender either...

I agree totally, he has a good tackle and good header but what we lacks was command and leadership.

We haven't seen his best neither so the only way is up.

Just a matter of time before he's our captain as well?

I can only see that when Hendo and Milner leaves tbh, and I reckon Hendo will be here for another 3-4 seasons tbh.

You’d think so, he seems like the ideal player in our team for the role because he has shown more leadership since January than we have had all season. We have a number of players who are boss and can win games on their own but we lacked leadership since Carra, Agger and Gerrard have gone. The fact we’ve gotten much better defensively is because of the leadership from Van Dijk from the back, constantly talking and taking lead. Said it before, I have nothing against Hendo but he’s not captain material IMO, same with Milner.

Slag? Porned?!! Anyone got any video highlights?!

No seriously - good on the man. Would be a big asset to any side and he's just the man the Dutch need to get them back to a level we all know they should be at.

      Great goal v Portugal.

Virgil was commanding in the game by way of this clip.

Good win for the Oranje in Ladyboy's own back yard.

Decent today and should have been awarded a penalty (also had a header that may have gone in if not for Sadio - ;D). Also kept Benteke from bullying us after the first 10-15 minutes.

But that poor touch on the long ball should have been a goal for Palace in the 2nd half, spared by another miss from Benteke.

Not as quick as I read, heard, and thought initially. Got away with one on the chance with Benteke.

Amazing to think back to when VVD signed - we were loosing Coutinho, and VVD was coming in for a huge fee and wasn't fully fit or match sharp. Things could've turned out a hell of a lot differently than they have done. Shitty were in for him, but Jürgen convinced him LFC was the right place - another massive example of how we benefit from Klopps pull. Imagine sticking VVD into the Shitty back line - they must have REALLY wanted him - he was offered more money, but we landed him.

Salah has been the player of this season, no doubt, unbelievable number of goals. But VVD is not far behind in being the player of the 2nd half of the season, and in the longer term could turn out to be an even more important signing.

Almost single handedly he's turned a ropey defense into a completely different animal. Great on the ball, physical, dominant in the air - seems like a real leader, calm, super under pressure, possible candidate for captain next season. But it's not just his own play - he's transformed the players around him - Lovren looks more comfortable, Karius who almost looked not up to it is making great saves and looking not out of place. Robertson and TAA are benefiting. I don't have to hide behind the couch after going two or three up and the other side start to turn the screw - we rarely see collapses anymore like what we'd gotten used to seeing - and F**k am I glad of that.

Cou was a top player, but with VVD we imho look that little bit more balanced between attack and defense. Another top piece of business from Jürgen, knew what he wanted and waiting for the exact player he wanted, and we needed. SO great to see us signing players who are in the top 3-5 in their position in the world.

Am just SOO made up with how we've performed this season, how the side is progressing under Jürgen, and the style of football we are playing :) It's brilliant to watch, we're in line to get top4 again, in a CL semi for first time in ages and the level and qaulity of football in that competition is so incredible - and am so hopeful for the future knowing Jürgen will strengthen again this summer. Not easy to make signings like VVD, but if Jürgen manages to get a few more in his bracket, going to be exciting times ahead...

You know the thing is it is obvious we don't have the financial resources to buy expensive toys, because if we play that game we lose to City, Chelsea and Man utd in the law of averages.   But we bought this guy for an absolute bargain.   Yes it was a World Record signing for a defender, but it was an absolute bargain financially.

Lovren we bought for 20m before VVD for me he wasn't worth 20p, now he is playing like a top Centre half can easily translate to an instant increment of 25m in his value.

Karius wasn't good enough.    We have been linked to goalies of 35m+  Karius is good enough to play for us.   I don’t think I am being unreasonable by adding 20-25m in his value.

Robertson has been brilliant and to be fair he was putting good performances from the start, but consistency has come with help of VVD so I would only put about 10m on to his valuation because he looked very good before VVD.

Even TAA with a solid defence he is becoming good.  I think all these players have taken a sharp up turn it is a lot to do with VVD,  obviously, Klopp and the coaching staff have a massive role.  But let us be honest we needed a lot of players to sort out our defence for one player to really sort it out.  In my opinion he is bargain of the season cheaper than Salah.  Because in my opinion he has added financial value to our defence more than what we paid if take into account Klavan and Matip and looking at it from this perspective we got paid to purchase.

Lovren just seems to have improved out of all recognition since playing alongside Virgil and all of a sudden our goalkeeper isn't being judged every 5 seconds and our fullbacks can defend and attack we should call him the missing link.

Exactly, we needed a leader who brings confidence to our team. VVD is rock solid and a gentle beast :)

One thing that I have been impressed most with VVD is the coolness and calmness that VVD brings to Liverpool. I'm going to take the Spurs game as one example and then take, say the City 3-0 game as the other example.

Away to Spurs, Lovren fu**ed up ASAP for a chance for Kane to score. He lost the head and then started panicking and fu**ed up again ASAP for another goal. He was mentally weak and was all over the shop. This spread throughout the defence as lads didn't know whether to leave him try win his battles or help him. Heads were gone in defence. Goalkeeper and CB don't know who is coming for the ball and then either they both go for the same ball and crash into each other, or else none of them go for it and leave a free ball into the box.

That is totally gone with VVD now. He brings an assuredness to the defence. His teammates are confident that he will win nearly every header that comes into the box, VVD will dominate his area. The goalkeeper has an understanding with him and VVD has one with the keeper. They both know when to stay and when to go.

Also in terms of mentality, VVD is massive. The goal City got inside 2 minutes - whether you think VVD fu**ed up for it or whether you think it's a foul (I actually think it was both but still), VVD has the right mentality to recover from this mistake (we'll say it is in this scenario as you can't unaward the goal). VVD then put in a very good display after this. City played an awful lot on the wings that night - Silva & Sane doubling up on the left and put in any amount of crosses. VVD made sure that nothing came of these crosses. He made sure that one mistake did not snowball into a massive case of mistake after mistake after mistake, something what has happened to our defence in the past.

If you look at our early season games, if we conceded one goal, we then went on to concede many goals in the same game. It was all or nothing for our defence. Concede 0 or concede 3. That doesn't happen anymore. If we concede 1, it stops at 1. There is a big reason for that and that is a calm, collected, assured head at CB. 👍🏻

Must have thought ‘this lot are a bunch of wet wipes’ after mugging Moreno throughout the game. Then he hits a wall.
