Liverpool footballer Jon Flanagan assaulted girlfriend

Liverpool footballer Jon Flanagan has pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.

The 25-year-old defender appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday accused of kicking Rachael Wall.

He was charged following an incident in Duke Street, in Liverpool city centre, on 22 December. He will be sentenced later this month.

Liverpool-born Flanagan has made more than 50 first-team appearances for the club since making his debut aged 18.

The court heard he had been seen on CCTV assaulting his partner, who he has been in a relationship with for 18 months.

Lionel Greig, mitigating, said the victim had not provided a statement and there had been no previous instances of domestic violence in their relationship.

Both parties were under the influence of alcohol at the time, he added.

District Judge Wendy Lloyd said she had been given a breakdown of the CCTV, which showed Flanagan assaulting his partner on "several occasions" and kicking her at one point.

The case was adjourned to 17 January when Flanagan will be sentenced.

Flanagan was a standby for England's 2014 World Cup squad, but has only played once for Liverpool this season and spent last season on loan at Burnley after a 20-month injury lay off.

      He has one England cap.

He's got to go. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't cancel his contract immediately.

Very surprised that he has done this.

Even more surprised that the ugly little tw*t has even got a girlfriend.

      Girlfriend.

       :f_doh:

      What a disgusting disgrace.

Revert to my earlier comment - he gets paid enough to avoid nonsense like this, but now taking account of the fact that it wasn't a provoked assault nor in any shape or form justifiable....  get rid. Completely inexcusable.

End of the road for him at LFC.

Surprised Liverpool haven't already made an annoucement after pleading guilty but they will almost certainly have done by the sentencing.

I am surprised however that the judge has already said this is a community sentence so not too sure what exactly it's entailed.

      What a fool.

Unfortunate on many levels. Hope he gets his head right and realizes that's not behavior fitting a human, much less one that wants to be paid hundreds of thousands to be employed by LFC.

No place for woman beaters at this club. Ruined the little chance of a career he had with us.

      I used to like Flanno.

A sad story indeed, hopefully he can get help with his issues but i can't see his employment continuing here. Have no desire to lambast the boy as i have no idea exactly what happened or why.

      Spot on.

Helping someone who’s made a mistake is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Proposing such a course of action is in no way condoning domestic violence.

Clearly the lad has had something bottled up & has underlying issues for a while & it's surfaced on the night of the assault...

Footballers are human too, maybe injuries, lack of playing time & the realisation of no longer being at his hometown club has become too much for the lad..

He will of course be disciplined - rightly so - but I agree the club should take a lead here.

Lots of women (and men now I guess) feeling the back of someone’s hand behind closed doors - chance for club to really make a point about dealing with these issues.

Binning him in isolation just punts the problem onto society as a whole.

That is, of course, contingent upon him showing contrition / remorse.

He's not good enough to play at LFC. Not sure what responsibility the club have to ensuring a highly paid grown up behaves properly.
