      UEFA Nations League
      Jan 24, 2018 08:35:34 pm
Didn't find a UEFA Nations League topic, so will stick it in here.

Probably not of interest to most...
      https://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/international-soccer/watch-martin-oneill-accuses-rts-tony-odonoghue-of-real-verbal-attack-in-postdenmark-interview-during-frosty-exchange-today-36526308.html#
... but as an Intl Manager, who gets paid a shed load, the least should expect is for him to answer a few questions and not behave like a spoilt spot-popping adolescent child

O'Donoghue definitely has been overly critical in some interviews imo, but O'Neill is loosing friends with his pathetic behaviour. Does he not know we're f**king watching. I wouldn't mind hearing his answer to some of the questions tbh.

Nope not qualifiers just friendlies....think of a reason for "one season wonder" Alli to be glorified for a 5 yard square pass by the commentary team.

They are not completely pointless friendly's since draw seeding for Euro 2020 qualifiers is based on results of the Nations League. How it ties into it I have no idea. I believe playoff spots for Euro 2020 are also tied into it as well

It was Sneijder's Dutch swansong last night and after the match to commemorate his career they hauled out a mock living room onto the pitch. No, seriously.

So on top of the Euro/World cup qualifiers, they have basically turned the friendlies into "competitive" games, so more intensive matches for players? Ridiculous.

They are qualifiers, subject to the usual competitive game criteria. A back door route into the next Euros.

Nothing particularly wrong with the idea, except the playoff round in 2020, (the side door route) after the draw for the tournament proper has been made, which will affect tournament preparation.

Hate playoffs. If you haven't made it after 14 qualifiers, you should let those who have, get on with the rest of the competition.

So that's three defeats on the bounce for Southgate but things are on the up because they keep on making us play decent teams and when we do we get beat.  The world cup was great because there were some great games but until the Euros I will give it a miss its pointless

Just after the 2nd world war finished there was a team made up of Great Britain players  to play the rest of Europe.L.F.C. supporters should be very proud of our very own Billy Liddell who played for the Great Britain team.He was special .

England really need to move away from the 3 at the back and start looking into players like, Winks, Maddison, Mount and Foden.

England really need to move away from the 3 at the back and start looking into players like, Winks, Maddison, Mount and Foden.

Absolutely these are the sort of games to give some of the youngsters a bit of experience, we all know what to expect from the likes of Delph and Wellbeck

Just after the 2nd world war finished there was a team made up of Great Britain players  to play the rest of Europe.L.F.C. supporters should be very proud of our very own Billy Liddell who played for the Great Britain team.He was special .

I had heard Billy Liddell was something else. Was he a Gerrard type?

He played anywhere across the front five in today's lingo.I might be biased but in my mind Billy Liddell was the greatest Liverpool player ever.He never let his head drop and gave maximum effort from the minute he stepped onto the pitch. We were not called Liddellpool for nothing.I have so many memories of the man I could go on and on about him.

It was ok! Portugal deserved the win but I'm not Fernando Santos' biggest fan to be honest. I thought he was lucky as hell to win the Euro and is still living off that reputation.

Italy, though, are beyond recognition. Must be one of the weakest Italian teams I've seen in a long time.

Never understood why so many people can't see how good Wijnaldum is. Been banging the Wijnaldum drum ever since he arrived. Great player.

Some very interesting players in that young, Dutch side too. De Light having a particularly poor game though. Other than that I really like Bergwijn and love Frenkie De Jong, amazing young player.

Looking forward to the Belgium - Netherlands friendly next week.

Yeah, tbh, I was one of those posters who didn't fully understand and appreciate Wijnaldum until you pointed me into the right direction  :D He is so tactically aware, but on top of that, a fantastic footballer and athletic.

I think the Dutch are missing that 1 exceptional/world class attacking player to take them to the next level, but yeah, they have a very strong young team. And I didn't know they were playing Belgium next week! Can't wait!!!

I quite like this Nations League, probably because Norway managed to get promotion from League C! But in seriousness I think it produced some quite good matches, certainly better than normal friendlies.

What  I'd do is have nations league replace qualifying more. A system where group A winners and runners up qualify auto. The two Group B play off finalists qualify, Group C and D winners qualify. That's 4+2+1+1+hosts which leaves the remaining 46 teams to go into groups with 15 places available. Could have 10 groups where winners qualify and runners up play off. The group's would be 4 or 5 teams big. That replaces the old 5 or 6 places big. That means teams only have 6 or 8 qualifying games. If teams have 6 qualifying games they get a qouta of 4 friendlies. For teams with 8 qualifying games 2 friendlies. All teams would get 10 international games during qualifying after the nations league. Nations League winners would need much more ranking points per win to ensure they wouldn't lose ranking places due to a much shorter qualification.

Why exactly? England already co-hosts the Euros as it is.

We could always sign players with no chance of playing international football. They would all be crap players admittedly, but they would get their rest time in the season and summer.

There's no point in being "against it", it's up and running, and here to stay. Most English fans seemed to be against it when it started up, but because Lovren had a 5 minute snooze against England, the general opinion has changed, and they're singing football's coming home again.

It's a bit of a mickey mouse tournament tbh, and the 3 team groups should be scrapped imo, but it gave the big countries what they wanted, and the weaker countries a chance to show what they're capable of. You could have 3 groups of 4, every game as competitive, with the winners and best runner up qualifying for the finals.
