I teach year 6. I don't let children go to the toilet during lessons. Would you have a problem with this rule for your child.

So you are happy to let them wet themselves or even worse?

They are 10 and 11 they won't wet themselves. If they have a note from the doctor about a medical problem fine. They have breaktimes to use the toilet.

They will soon be in secondary school. They should be able to manage their toilet needs at breaktimes.

Well - you're the boss and you make the laws in the classroom. My teachers in primary school weren't afraid to lay the law down in terms of when or when not to go to the toilet. Didn't do me any harm.

And look at me now - I piss myself regularly. (joking)

If they need the toilet that should be able to go

      Agree.

I let my staff go to the toilet if they need to as long as we're quiet.

Can't imagine telling a primary school kid they can't go to the toilet.

      Yes I do.

My child suffered like this at about that age and it massively impacted his confidence.

Human beings go to the toilet when they need to go not when someone else says it’s ok.

      To do otherwise is de-civilising.

I’m afraid you’ve got that one wrong. Utterly wrong.

They are fine with the rule. Like I say 10 and 11 year olds should be capable of holding a wee until their break.

I had one of the parents in last week because her daughter was bursting on the way home. She asked 5 minutes after lunch and why not go before her journey home if so desperate?

They're obviously not fine about it if you have parents complaining.

Listen, you do what you feel is right but I just think it's harsh.

Feels like you’ve asked for feedback Jemma but really wanted validation......?

Out of interest can I ask if you’re a parent as well as a teacher? That might change your perspective.

Anyways - good luck in your career the world needs quality teachers. I hope you’re one the “good guys” 😉

If they need to go yes.

Obviously I'd explain to them in future to try and go and lunch time but if they need to go they need to go.

It does them good to get in the habit. It is always nicer to have a wee after a long wait anyway.

The toilets are just outside the room if they can't remember to go at break it is not my problem.

You should let them go, but, if a certain child makes an habit of it then I can see it becoming annoying when you are trying to teach a class... in a perfect world maybe a hallway staff member who can escort them to the bathroom door and back making sure its not just to wonder around, but that costs money I guess so it's not an option...

Teacher discretion. If they have been to the toilet at break they shouldn't need to go during lesson time.

The thing is it is like a chain reaction. If you let one go they all suddenly need to. It is easier to just to have a firm breaktime only rule, they then either learn to go at break or sit with their legs crossed.

I’d have just gone anyway, if the teacher wanted to punish me for going then so be it. Teachers quite happily drink their coffee during lesson and I’m sure if they really had to go then they would.

Sound like you are trying to be a Hitler for no reason, they’re kids. Say about them starting secondary school so obviously growing up a bit but how are you meant to gain the respect of the pupils if you won’t even let them go to the toilet.

If they are going out of class and messing around it’s a bit different.

I'd definitely be strict say within the first half hour of a lesson because then there is no excuse at all, but as someone who, when has any amount of drink, needs to go soon after, I'd probably have a softer look at it say 45 minutes into a lesson.

Maybe keep a chart/book near the door of your classroom, when a student needs to leave, make sure they sign it, and if once a week you look at it, and spot the same name over and over again, organise a meeting with the head teacher/parents just to outline how distracting it can be to their education and discuss possible medical reasons, if a child is going to the toilet just to skip a few minutes then knowing this is the outcome might make them avoid it.

It would (perhaps will if that’s something you plan in your future) give you a different perspective.

The welfare of the individual child is just as important as maintaining a structure in class

In 5 years of teaching I've never left to go to the toilet. It would have to be a true emergency for a teacher to go during lessons.

I as well have the kids have a water bottle in class that they can get during their independent work.

I have children in year 1 and year 4, actually in recent weeks my eldest has said to me if I need the toilet in lesson then what do I do? I said to him you just go and ask your teacher and tell her you need to go

I trust my lad, he works hard and wouldn't do it to just get out of lesson, if he asked and was told no I wouldn't be happy at all about it

It's a basic human requirement if they need to go to the toilet they should be able to go.

If a kid asked to go a load of times in the same lesson then I could understand if they were told no. But if they ask and they need to go then they should be able to go. 5 minutes or not

Anyway, I've given my opinion, I'm not getting into it any further.
I don't agree with kids not being allowed to go to the toilet if they need as long as they are doing their work and behaving they should be allowed a basic human need.
If I am in a work meeting or course and someone needs the toilet they go.

I let each child go to the sink once during a session one at a time if they want a drink, they are only given 1 minute.

And it takes how long to go to the toilet? Probably a lot less time than letting a combined 15-30 kids all go get a drink during their independent work.
The odd child going to the toilet for a couple of minutes is a lot less disruptive to the learning environment than the whole class being allowed to go fill up their water bottles, whether hat is for a timed 1 minute or not.

I let them have a drink because it is school policy to encourage drinking water.

Water helps than concentrate. Like I've said they have breaks to go for a wee.

Water helps than concentrate. Like I've said they have breaks to go for a wee.

They have breaks to get a drink for the lesson, so why do you let them get it during the lesson? Something you say about needing the toilet.
You say that water help their concentration, well not letting them go to the toilet is going to do the opposite?

You let them get the thing that makes them need the toilet and then not let them go when needed.

I let them have a drink because it is school policy to encourage drinking water.

So school policy is to drink water.

By drinking water you need to go to the toilet

But you won't let them go to the toilet

      Ok

Because they don't take their bottles out to play with them. They don't need the loo if they have been at break. Who needs to go more than once every couple of hours.

If work is incomplete they stay at break to do it.

They don't drink too much. Breaks are in place for the toilet.

They’re children, it doesn’t matter if they need to go more than once every couple of hours, especially if you are letting them drink in class.

      Makes no sense to me;

Don’t let them go to the toilet as they can go at break
Let them go get a drink during lesson
Don’t take a drink bottle out with them to get at break
Has to stay behind at break to finish work which then takes away the time they are allowed to go to the toilet

Is it school policy they don’t go to the toilet during lesson, or is this you saying?
Personally I think you’ve had it in the neck from a parent or something and now looking for justification. Though why you have come on to a Liverpool Football Club forum to do that I’m not quite sure.

It is not school policy that they can't go to loo in class time it is teacher discretion.
I have already said a parent was unhappy because I made her daughter wait all afternoon.

If they stay at break they still go to the toilet.

Ah okay so it’s not school policy and it’s not actually within your rights to stop them going to the toilet then. Glad we’ve cleared that up.

Yeah I think it has definitely come for the time to call it a day. Try not to be too disappointed yous lot ;)
