      Southampton v mancs:
      Incident:
      Penalty claim by Southampton
      Decision: No action taken.

VAR Review? Decision Overturned. Penalty given.

Despite the pundits waxing lyrical about City, the Bournemouth penalty claim was a clearcut call, if we could use the technology that every other major European league now takes for granted. And if they scored it, we could have seen a very different result.

But we can't, and the penalty call in the Southampton game, could well have been the difference between someone keeping his job or getting sacked. That's the human cost when avoidable errors are condoned and tolerated.

But they won't be in the European Cup from February. After years of outrage incompetence and injustice, the home game v Napoli is our final European Cup game where the on field referee has just one opportunity to get a big call right. So if you fall over in the box for no reason, or engineer "contact" in the box, or try to swap shirts at set pieces, you won't benefit anymore. And if you were miles offside when the ball was played, then you can stop celebrating, because your goal will not stand. A camera cannot be conned.

We've come a long way in less than 10 years, from the FIFA President ruling all forms of technology aids out of our sport, to it becoming standard practice at the very highest levels of the game, bringing Fair Play to those who play it, and Justice to those who pay good money out to watch it. VAR is coming to a stadium near you.

In the meantime however, there are 24 more weeks in the EPL where we have to live with incompetence. So...

Still not giving a flying F**k about this. Mistakes are one of my favourite parts of the game.

Timekeeping is a much more pressing issue and it should be taken out of the referees hands. Make timewasting pointless, though still a bookable offence, if players are just trying to slow down the game. Make play acting and late substitutes irrelevant. Make sure we get 90 minutes of football, not the forty or fifty minutes we've been getting recently.

After at least 61 human errors recorded to date this season, VAR's were let loose in the cups. Where one ref was VAR last season, numerous others had a go at being the VAR this time. The ref of our game at City who didn't spot 2 major decisions wrong on the night, was also the VAR for our cup game, but had nothing to review. Plenty of others did however, changing yellow cards to red, awarding penalties instead of offsides, and vice versa. After all that fun, they now go back to the old system, of hoping to get decisions correct in the league.

      Chelsea v Sheffield Wednesday yesterday

I am very much a sceptic of VAR as I thinks known but genuine question here

Penalty is given to Wednesday yesterday, VAR (eventually) overturns and says a clean tackle by the Chelsea defender

How come then the play is started by an apparent drop ball ( even though the ref just gave it to Cabellero) instead of a corner to Sheffield Wednesday?
Pen given by the ref, video ref says he won the ball, ball goes behind
      Surely a corner then?

      Why?

      Makes something sh*te even shiter

Wednesday in this example first think they have a pen ( wasn't one granted) but are then 'punished twice as had the ref seen the tackle he gives the corner

In this example the drop ball is given to the Chelsea keeper who starts an attack in which they get a penalty

      Doesn't seem right to me

Why ? Well that’s the regulations they decided

And The ref blows his whistle before the ball goes out of play anyway apparently so the game was dead before the ball went out.

      The ball goes out naturally

Why on overturning the decision they can't play on from where the natural stoppage would have been.

As we saw at the weekend when it wasn't  available, there isn't anything fair about the wrong decision made, while there isn't 200 million quid resting on refs getting decisions right in other leagues and levels. But there is in the competitions we're in, so they have to be called right. If that means taking a bit more time, that's fine.

When it was available at the weekend, a penalty decision was correctly overturned. The fans of the team who lost out because of it, may not like it much, but the VAR showed they had no case.
