Same team. Same attitude. Same result as the West Hame game.

Then Klopp on Tuesday we can rest our front three and whoever else for the Mancs.

Weird, if it is. I wouldn't expect it to be the same after this weekend though

He doesn't have a bus to park, that is my point. Its all very well having the tactic of parking a bus but if your players, specifically defenders, are sh*te then it makes little difference. If Rafa had a bus to park then why did he end up drawing a match at the weekend when he was 2-0 up?

I honestly think we will win this game quite easily, especially if we can get a nice early goal.

It will be a massive 3 points because Chelsea v City. If we can get 7 clear of Chelsea we should be favourites for a top four spot. At that point 24/30 of remaining points would guarantee a top four spot regardless of rival results.

      Good info, but Yikes!

That may be one of the main points of motivation for the group this week then. Prove you can beat this lot...because you haven't yet.

I'm still confident because we seem to have found a higher level of consistency, but as always, beware the team battling the drop.

Success for Rafa will be to keep Newcastle in the Premier league. Rafa will know this game won't have much say in that. He will defend and hope we misfire. If they are lucky enough to snatch a goal early on before we strike, they will have an outside chance.

But they aren't good enought to shut us out. Always good to see Rafa back on Merseyside. He knows he's always welcome here.

This I suppose IS his highest attainable goal this season, just staying up. It kind of begs the question for me: Why did Rafa choose to manage this club? It's not as if Ashley has ever pretended to be a big-spending owner with a goal of pushing Newcastle into the top group of teams in England. The club has a pretty big fan base and stadium, I know. But considering where Rafa has been, I don't quite get what his interest is in managing them.

      Anyone know?

He was also the reason why they drew 2-2 the last day after being 2-0 up. He missed a chance to score to go 3-0 up and then he let runners from midfield score both goals to make it 2-1 and 2-2. He got a bollocking after the game too. He probably won't start as a result.

Expect Rafa to start Diame & maybe Merino to start. Think they will go very defensive again.

They did a job on United but realistically still gave away big chances that United just missed and that was at St. James.

I feared the West Ham game and we could easily have gone 1 down so room for complacency here either.

Will Klopp leave Hendo on the bench again,if so does that mean Hendo is now veiwed as a player selected when we need to be defensively disciplined. As was the Case V Porto away. Many on here say he is overly cautious, not direct enough.

I mean, as it happened we battered Porto but we needed Hendo to hold it together. How will that effect Hendo longterm if he is only used in tough away games either in the League or in the remainder of the Euro campaign.

Could be but I think he will pull Salah & Firmino at 3-0 and rest them for the Porto home leg. Could end up being a dog of a game and have to grind out a 1-0. Rafa will try to stiffle us, and try and nick a goal. If we undo them early we will run out easy but don't rule out a Rafa defensive shut out.

There is fluidity between the midfield and front 3. Keep the same line up. Probably, Rafa will probably park the bus and stifle our attack. I expect us to win this game but that requires hard work. In any shape or form, lets just win the game and continue to pile the pressure on MU.

Is this the same Defensive shut out as demonstrated against Bournemouth last weekend when they were 2-0 up??

Think these will be better defensively that West Ham for sure, and better disciplined. Rafa knows how to set up a team well at the back, especially with poorer quality players. We saw that here for ourselves.

I think they will sit deep and expect us to break us down, so I think players like Henderson & Lallana are needed. Henderson for his repeated recycling of possession ability. Keep them working from side to side, wear down Newcastle. Keep finding Firmino in space and creating the space. While not using the space yet, we will eventually and keep the Newcastle defence working, don't let them assume we are going to go wide all the time. Tire them out, keep probing and keeping the ball. Beat them mentally and physically and then strike. Lallana is great at his quick corner turns and can create space and diagonal runs and these will be needed here. I thought that the West Ham game was a game where we needed a goal from a late midfield run and I think this may apply here too. Newcastle (like West Ham) will be so pre-occupied with our front 3, it could be a game for the middle 3 to step up and get us on the scoresheet.

Once we go 1-0, they will come out 5 yards and that will give Salah, Mane some more space in behind. Then we can play quick and fast and break and score more (hopefully :))

I'd take the 1-0 now in a heartbeat - back above all teams bar City and there for at least a day. Don't forget that Spurs play before us Saturday and can go ahead of us if they beat Huddersfield at home. This weekend serves as a 'functional' win in my eyes - let the big scoring games come later on.

Rafa, when in the opposite dugout, has long been a bogey manager for us. Pretty much heralded the decline of his predecessor Houllier when he more or less knocked us out of Europe with his Valencia team back in 2002. It certainly won't be easy - as expected with a Rafa side they are well organised and got a lot to fight for down near the bottom there. Rarely do his sides get beat handsomely.

F**k me have any of you guys actually watched Newcastle this season, all this talk of parking the bus is utter nonsense, Newcastle quite simply do not have a bus to park, irrespective of how much of a genius Rafa is, which btw is a stange term for someone who's side is perilously close to relegation.

Love Rafa, he's the only manager I'd like to come back if Jürgen ever decided to leave, but sentiment goes out the window in football so i would love it if we absolutely battered 'Toon' from pillar to post on Saturday,

I think Rafa will steer his side to safety but honestly can't see him being there next season, anyhoo, not our concern i want us to be totally ruthless and treat this game as if it were against a top rival,

I'd keep the same X1 as of WHU with the exception of swopping Matip for Lovren,

The barcodes have done well recently but n all honesty they are proper up against it this time, and despite all Rafa's ingenuity and guile i think even he will concede they are up sh*t creek with no sign of any paddles and a massive hole in their boat,

                                  Karius
           Trent Lovren Van Dijk Robertson
                     Ox      Jimmy       Can
                   Salah    Firmino    Mane

Bench:   Ward, Gomez, Henderson, Gini, Lallana, Matip, Ings

      4-0  MIGHTY  REDMEN  (at least)

Should be cold enough that we don't have to put up with camera shots of fat middle aged blokes with their beer belly's hanging over their jeans at least. Always a plus to this sort of weather!

They are a odd side with the ability to put in decent performances and conversely utter sh*te.

No doubt they will try and keep it tight and hope to catch us on the counter like the Hammers last week.

Either way we gave too much fire power up front and with the midfield starting to link up well with the fab 3 there is only one outcome. Sorry Rafa.

Never been a team that can guarantee a shut out at any time. So gawd knows what your waffling on about. And you must have noticed that what happens in one game is not a guide to the next.

Pitch should be ok but the safety of the fans getting to and from the game might be a problem.

Was just coming in to say this. If the weather is as bad as forecasted over today and tomorrow I’d expect ours plus a lot of other games to be postponed.

Think it's looking more likely that the game will be called off. All kinds of travel problems all over the country. Many fans travel long distances. Half five kick off means fans travelling back from about 8pm and obviously late into the night.

Nightmare for Newcastle fans as well. I mean it's more or less, being a Newcastle fan, a permanent 'mare for them so they should be used to it.

All the Scottish games have been called off, 4 off in the championship and leagues 1 & 2 are nearly all off. Tranmere's game at home is off.

Our pitch should be ok and I would imagine the common passageways inside the stadium are safe. So it will come down to the safety of fans travelling to the ground. Public transport is in some disarray. Some roads and motorways are blocked or closed all together. Flights not to great either. Looking grim. I would expect a relatively early announcement so fans will know the situation.

Rather we play such vital games with no reason for excuses such as the conditions were bad and some potential injuries being caused.
If it goes ahead and all considered, I reckon presently that it would be a very nervy 2-1 win for the boys.
Rest some of the attackers in the Porto 2nd leg and go all out for the manure game on next weekend.

Gotta say that I am glad that our old boy, Jonjo Shelvey isn’t available. Always worried when an ex-red has the chance to face us and suddenly puts in a top class performance.

Always worried when an ex-red has the chance to face us and suddenly puts in a top class performance.
you know there is heaters under the turf right?

I love Rafa Benitez to bits but he's in for a torrid ride when we lock horns at 5.30 Saturday.
He'll play his Talismen and instruct them to do their utmost to break us down but we'll simply be too strong for them.Fact !
If there's one player we've gotta keep an eye on it's Shelvey.
I say it every time, but it's true, he's a banker on scoring at Anfield or at least an assist.
Stop him from playing his game and it's another 3 points in the bag.

good feeling about this one..going for a 3-1 win

      Apparently shelvey is unavailable.

Has kick off time being moved or have the mods got it wrong. The countdown to kick off is showing just shy of 7 hours, as if it’s a 3pm kick off. Is it not 5:30pm?

Just noticed that myself and had to double check, as I’d organised my day around it!

Going for a 2  0 win for the Reds, our defence seemingly tightened up, a bit lately. Although expect a tough battle, with Rafa in charge at struggling Newcastle.

It would be huge if we can win and Chelsea lose to City. That would open up a sizeable gap to 5th place and really put us in the driving seat for top 4 as a minimum.

Delighted to see that Shelvey is out for them. He's their most important player along with Lascelles. They will be tough to break down but I fancy us to win this one 2-0. VVD and Salah with the goals.

Yep, win this and City beat Chelsea and it increases that gap.

Rafa will make it tough and even more so I fell coming back here but we should have enough to win this.

It'll be tight though and I think 2-1.

Been said by Heimdall and others that Rafa can plan and plot till he's blue in the face but they just don't have the defensive capabilities to shut out an attack as potent as ours.

But there is no script and the performance is not guaranteed. Whilst I fully expect us to run out easy winners all results are on the table. Nevertheless I'll say....4-0

Karius, Trent, Lovren, VVD, Robertson, Hendo, Can, Ox, Salah, Firmino, Mane

Yeah if we get the expected win and City turn Chelsea over, it gives us a 7 point buffer. Might just need it playing Mancheater Utd next week. And with Conteh in the sh*t 'ouse with Abram we could strike a significant blow this weekend.

You raise a good point there. Maybe because thermal socks are just too expensive for football clubs to buy. Im thinking they would need to buy for all players,  if they brought for multiple days it would cost even more than Klopps iPad.

The so called snood was banned a few seasons back. But gloves are still worn..just imagine a winger coming out with gloves on facing Tommy Smith...the air would turn blue.

Remember a few years ago Chelsea got drawn away to Oldham and Oldham were saying stuff like..."those southerners won't like the cold biting wind.." Chelsea won and Vialli the then Chelsea manager to his credit said..." the crap they came out with saying we would not like the cold....we are Professionals for fucks sake..."

      yes, heated pitch and thermals!
Snood ban is right, since if a player tugged on a snood it could cause neck injury.

I do think clubs should compensate fans who can't attend because of the weather today. Perhaps a free ticket to another game.
