Liverpool in talks over club-record swoop for man they want to partner Keita
      Date published: Thursday 3rd May 2018 3:20

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes is in talks over a summer move to Liverpool after Jürgen Klopp outlined the Portuguese star as his top transfer target, according to claims in the Portuguese press.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Klopp has identified the former Sampdoria man as a perfect midfield partner for Naby Keita at Anfield next season and has instructed club bosses to open talks over a summer swoop.

Portugal international Fernandes has a €100million release clause in his Sporting contract, which he signed upon joining the club last summer in a €8.5million deal.

And it’s claimed the Portuguese giants are unwilling to discuss a reduced fee for the midfielder – meaning the potential £88m investment will shatter the club record £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January.

A Bola suggest Liverpool are ready to make their move for Fernandes now after a clutch of other clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, also made their interest known for the 23-year-old.

Fernandes has four caps for his country and 29 goals in 183 games during his career, which has also taken in spells at Novara and Udinese, as well as Samp.

Another of Klopp’s top targets, Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, is said to be closing in on a move to one of the Reds’ European rivals.

No idea if it is true about Bruno, but I feel certain Dani Ceballos has never been a Jürgen target.

I expect to be underwhelmed at Dani's destination for next season.

About 50 Sporting fans have invaded the club's training ground and attacked the players. Bas Dost had to be taken to hospital to receive stitches on his head. I've read that it shouldn't be difficult for players to rescind their contracts unilaterally in an extreme situation such as that.

Bruno Fernandes is said to want to leave the club immediately. Shouldn't be difficult to get him now, perhaps even on a free. I say it again, superb player.

Why did the fans attack their own players?

They were favourites for the title at one point, but somehow managed to finish 3rd by losing the last match of the competition (they needed a simple win to finish 2nd).
Finishing 3rd meant they are out of Champions League next season, and their biggest rivals Benfica are in it.

On the other hand, they've won the League Cup recently and are about to play the Portuguese Cup final this weekend, so could end the season with two cup wins, which makes it difficult to understand the situation just by looking at the results on the pitch.

From what i understand the main problem at the club right now is their president, a truly megalomaniac lunatic who thinks he's bigger than the club. When Sporting lost to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League with two bad mistakes by their central defenders (one of them Seba Coates), the president publicly criticised the players, which generated a quite serious crisis. Players came out in their social media criticising the president with a common message, and the president in turn said all players who protested in that way were "suspended".

For a few days people were actually unsure who would play for Sporting for the rest of the season, but apparently it took their manager Jorge Jesus to achieve a truce between the parts, the "suspended" players got back into the team and normality seemed to have resumed.

But then after missing out in Champions League qualification with a pretty bad defeat against Marítimo, things got out of control again. A group of supporters invaded the training ground and attacked players and manager.

Later that night, hundreds of supporters rushed to the area surrounding the club's stadium to show support for the players, manager and protest against violence ("50 are not 3.5 million", one of their banners said. Another read "against violence, with Sporting").

Those are thugs that exist in all major "firms" in Portuguese clubs here apparently, but I've read more than one observer saying the president really did not help the situation by exposing his players like that, even threatening them, exacerbating a situation of crisis that has now reached its peak. Saw lots of people saying it was the saddest day in the history of the club, it was that bad.

As a result now I fully expect some of their players to leave the club at the end of the season. Some of them were expected to leave regardless, such as Rui Patricio and William Carvalho. But I'd think Bas Dost won't want to continue at the club after being taken to hospital in this situation. And Bruno Fernandes is supposed to want to leave the club as well, after just one season with them.

Sporting Lisbon 'condemn aggression' after reports players were attacked

Sporting Lisbon have "vehemently condemned acts of vandalism and aggression to athletes" after a group of fans reportedly attacked players and trashed the club's training ground.

Sporting are preparing for Sunday's Portuguese Cup final against Aves.

Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha posted pictures of forward Bas Dost with several bad cuts on his head.

The club missed out on a Champions League place on the final day of the season.

After the alleged attacks, a club statement read: "Sporting is not this, Sporting cannot be this.

"We will make every effort to establish full responsibility for what has happened and we will demand the punishment of those who acted in this absolutely pitiful way."

The Portuguese League also released a statement "strongly condemning the violent acts".

"The behaviours that are being reported by the press are regrettable and have no place in professional football. The perpetrators are not football fans, but criminals."

Earlier in the day, the club had released another statement denying reports head coach Jorge Jesus had been suspended.

In April, president Bruno de Carvalho claimed to have suspended 19 first-team players after a Europa League defeat by Atletico Madrid, although he deleted the post and most of the players featured in their next game.

I always find it slightly amusing that these ultra fans, and violent demonstrators in general, find the need to cover their faces, shows the kind of cowards they are.

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour though and as a player you would of course want to leave

I've read labour law specialists saying the players could rescind their contracts after what happened. I have no idea how complicated that could be and if that would mean a long process in court, but if any players decide to push for it they could in fact leave Sporting for free, which would represent a really massive loss for Sporting who need the money from sales.

Diego, do you think he is good enough to be the attacking midfielder on a Premier League winning team?

EDIT: His highlights are definitely good enough.  :)

Have we ever credibly been linked with him?
