Not as confident as I'd like to be if it went down to this, but then again I've never been confident going into any penno shootout.

Same, I really don't get why clubs don't do this though. You can guarantee Ronaldo will be down the pecking order, just so he can win the Ballon d'Or if he scores the winning kick.

Only put Mo and Mane down because they have experienced pen taking at the highest pressure. Wijnaldum is a good shout too, forgot about him!

Was just coming in here to say, I hope Karius decides just before it goes to pens, to fake an injury so Migs could come on. I don't think I've seen Loris get even close to a penalty and that Migs, in the past has. Then I looked at those records and they are both sh*t!

Yes, you’re right. Just looked at Can’s stats and doesn’t show the penalty he scored in that shootout.

I just don't get why keepers make their mind up before the kick. Keepers make fantastic instinctive saves all the time from less than 12 yards. They should keep their eye on the ball and react instinctively.

If the ball is struck cleanly enough they have little chance, but if it's placed or miss hit or to close to the middle they would have a far better chance to save it if they watched the ball rather than dive one way or the other.

Truth be told I don't get the desire for Van Dijk to take one. I know he's composed on the pitch and everything but he strikes me as the type who'd welly it as hard as he could and tw*t it over the bar. Might just be me though cos I don't trust left footed penalty takers (other than Alan Kennedy). I think nerves might get the better of Trent as well.

Why do people want Hendo, a typical English penalty flapper as opposed to the cool headed Van Dijk, who took Celtics penalties as cool as the other side of the pillow.

According to the Echo VVD has never taken a penalty so why is he on so many lists.

Because of composure and because he always looks confident, chances are he would make his mind up and stick to it. You don’t want a player stepping up that isn’t confident.

Gerrard was the 5th penalty taker in Istanbul which surprised many (even though Xabi was no 1). And of course Ronaldo in the euros was no 5.

There is a method to the madness apparantly , just like many top coaches never stick defenders on the post during a corner

He did take the free kicks there so it makes sense for him to take a penaltie every once in a while. I did look for his stats and says he hasn’t taken one, don’t think those starts show shootouts though.

But TBH I can’t tell for sure, haven’t seen a Celtic game in years.

Not often were in Agreement but your spot on with that assessment. Hendo will miss his pen if he takes one. Occasionally he connects with a shot but he is not a good striker of a football. I think he has only taken the one penno for LFC and it was a shocker.

It would open up spaces. If the game is still even after 30 minutes, do a penalty shootout but have the penalty spot double the length away. That would be awesome.

That's actually a very good point, keepers should just stand tall and react to any sloppy penalties which are fairly central, if they are struck well and into the corners then there is no chance of saving them anyway.

Hate to put a dampener on this but if it comes to penalties, we're not winning.

If 3 of them put them away we've done well IMO - would not be remotely confident about penalties.  Couldn't trust the captain not to balloon it over the bar.  Lovren and van Dijk I'm not confident.  Lot of pressure for Trent.  Mane would stick it on the post.

Fair point but the instinctive saves are usually from packed boxes where an attacker doesn't have the time for a big run up, power and the full goal to aim for IMO.  Keepers usually narrowed down the angle  of the goal a lot IMO. 

Under pressure a player will certainly have a preference for a side he feels most comfortable on and it makes sense for a keeper to try to anticipate this.

Think I remember reading it was about 0.6 seconds from the ball being kicked to it going over the line, on average.  Would be a lot to process direction, react and then cover a 24 foot by 8 foot goal!

It won't get to pens imo but if it does.....this....
