England select 2018 World Cup squad

England World Cup squad: Trent Alexander-Arnold named by Gareth Southgate

Uncapped 19-year-old Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been named in Gareth Southgate's 23-man England squad for this summer's World Cup.

Defender Gary Cahill has been recalled and there are also places on the plane to Russia for Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart and midfielder Jack Wilshere have not been included, along with left-back Ryan Bertrand.

England start their Group G campaign against Tunisia on 18 June, before games against Panama and Belgium.

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is one of five players on standby for the tournament, along with Burnley keeper Tom Heaton, Clarets defender James Tarkowski, Bournemouth's Lewis Cook and fellow midfielder Jake Livermore of West Brom.

"I believe this is a squad we can be excited about," Southgate said.

"It is a young group but with some really important senior players, so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance."

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley).

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).

Standby: Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jake Livermore (West Brom), James Tarkowski (Burnley).

      Good luck to the lads.

Had high hopes for Southgate when he took charge he promised to take a fresh approach but same old names picked on who they play for rather than form.

Loftus Cheek and Stones is that really the best we can do?

Nick Pope is clearly the best goalkeeper, but I am not sure about his ability to hold his nerve in such a big tournament with such little experience.

on the one hand you want England to play just like Italia 90 it was brilliant. However we all know they are crap playing out of date boring football with possibly a manager even more boring than Hodgson.
I will watch as many games as possible and hopefully someone will seize the opportunity and it won't be Germany

Should fit in well then seeing as England are used to being a bunch of bottlers.

I get your point mate but I’m in the other hand hope all our players do well in the WC and go pass the group stages, no injuries of course.

Pretty sure for Mo would be fantastic to hin Egipt have a decent run in the WC, and same for all our other players in other teams too.

I for one don’t care who wins it, don’t think my country will even get a win, but it’s something special for the players, so hopefully they all have fun and of course no injuries.

      Fair enough 👍

Not for me like.. I'd rather them have the longest summer break possible. They'll get over being knocked out soon enough

I don't care who wins it either, I'll hardly watch much of it anyway.. bit here and there maybe

Apart from Rib does anyone even care what happens to England.

Grown out of supporting England a long time ago and in fact even went through a stage in my twenties where I would first pump a win for the opposition. Not bothered either way now, although the response to a England loss is usually pure comedy from the press and like.

Will always watch the WC or Euro’s to hopefully see some decent football but being associated with a team who have had the likes of Terry, Neville and Beckham and who lets face it are followed by a bunch of racist Neanderthals, nah not for me.

probably 20 years ago was the last time it was worth watching England. When they moved around the country it was a sell out with much better support.
Since then it all been about paying for Wembley and nothing more. It would be great to get excited about England but like  most others on here I just cant be arsed

Same feelings as above for me.

I don’t actively root against England, I just don’t give a sh*t. Something about following a team where the fans are 16 stone, 55 year old men with their face painted in England colours that just doesn’t do it for me.

Actually would like to see Argentina win it so Messi can have a World Cup in his locker, would be great to see one player really drag a team to victory. As it goes...France are my pick.

I wanted that few months ago, but If Salah wins the CL, do we really want Messi or Ronaldo to win the world cup? :D But then again, Messi has been just as influencial (in La Liga) as Salah but with better stats, so with or without winning the WC , would we still see Messi get that 6th Ballon d'Or?

Not arsed at all about England,I've only ever been interested in how well the Liverpool lads do like most reds I imagine & that is the only reason I will watch them play & I would go as far as to say I'm more interested in watching Germany & Brazil play.

Messi and Ronaldo will share that until they retire. I’m pretty sure they both have huge voting blocks who will vote them no matter the circumstances.

Depends. If we win the CL and Argentina don't win the World Cup, it would likely go to Salah.
If Egypt do well in the World Cup then it will be even more likely.
Salah scored 44 goals this season, Messi scored 45.
If Salah scores in the CL final, 1 goal equals Messi and 2 goals would beat him.
There is of course World Cup goals to add onto that as well.
Ronaldo is on 44 goals, we can't write him off either.

But Ronaldo could be an injured cheerleader for Portugal again like the Euro's and despite not being on the pitch, being the reason Portugal win and a worthy winner of the Balon d'Or.
It's got to be fixed, there is no way they deserved to win it every year for this long. For a start Iniesta should have in 2010, an incredible season and got the World Cup winning goal. Ribery should have won it one year too, arguably Suarez 2 years ago(?).

Pretty much who goes the furthest in the World Cup out of Ronaldo and Messi will win it, unless Madrid win the CL, then it will be Ronaldo.

Anyone else think it's a c**t move by Southgate to announce and change captains days before the CL final? Could have at least waited until after and then spoke to Hendo about it.

He could have, but he shouldn't really be captain here either. He's not confident enough.

Harry Kane said that we can win the world cup. He gives us a bad reputation. A good answer would be we'll win every game we can and just see how we progress.

I really wish people would stop perpetuating this bollocks

Numerous managers have made him skipper.. and they all know better than you.. they see him day in day out, if he wasn't a leader he wouldn't be either made or retained as the leader

Klopp has had nearly 3 years to change him.

He's backed by plenty of ex players who have nothing to gain by saying anything other than the truth..

He was taken by Mo out of reverence for him to the awards beacsue he's a leader

Honestly none of us have any clue about behind the scenes truth be told, for you to say he's not confident enough or he's not a leader is utter conjecture and bollocks..

If he wasn't what you think he isn't then wouldn't be it.. Jürgen doesn't leave him in the job because he doesn't want to hurt his feelings.. He leaves him in the job because you know what? He's obviously a leader

Keep saying this but he does the job Jürgen asks him to do and he does it well. Protect the CB's and give it to the players who score the goals.

Nigeria don't have the stand out star players like they used to have.

Hopefully as a team, they can pull together some decent performances, but not based on today! Truly awful in that 1st half. The communication was embarrassing, passing was poor, and they were physically afraid of the English. Think they only went forward twice.

2nd half was much better with the change in formation and players. Have to say, I would expect the 2nd half team to be more like the team that will be selected for the tournament.

Still lacking though, and a lot of work to be done in the next few weeks.

Glad to see Sterling play as he is awful. Nigeria would have been more than 2 down if not for him.

isn't there a deadline to name a captain? Not being funny but not everyone thinks Henderson is captain material, some people don't even think he's good enough to start. that goes for both Liverpool and England fans. If Southgate dropped his captaincy after losing the CL final, is that really any better? I'm not actually detecting a good time to drop him as captain, but personally I'd have made it one of the first things I did and it's about time Klopp manned up and dropped him as well. He was Rodgers first choice, Klopp would never have picked him himself.

If we get Fekir, with Keita and Ox and now Fabino. We won't have both Fabino and Henderson on at the same time and Fabino didn't come here to bench warm. Van Dijk should be captain at Liverpool. At England it's got to be Kane even though I can't stand him.

      Cracking goal that.

If Southgate was brave he should play Dier in the back three with Stones and Maguire and play Hendo in midfield.

A front 3 of Vardy, Kane and Rashford would worry any team.
This is a much better squad than what was built around Rooney.
It is only HT, but so far a solid performance.

I turned it off before half time, was boring me to sleep. Don't think any of the midfield 3; Hendo, Delph and Loftus-Cheek managed a single forward pass between them until about 15mins in!

England put in a good performance. 2-0 is a good score. Personally I don't like United, but I wouldn't try to call them sh*te after they dominated a game. Just because England aren't in the top 10 doesn't mean they're sh*te.

Me a WUM  :lmao: Wasn't me who said Klopp was sh*te for the majority of the season and had doubts whether he was good enough for Liverpool  ;)  :f_whistle:
That's got nothing to do with this. You're just trying to change the subject after posting garbage. For your information, when I said those comments I wasn't the only one. At that time our first 11 had Klaven, Mignolet and Moreno in it whilst Robbo was just bench warming. Klopp actually could have done a lot better in the first half the season. The fans were getting divided on Klopp. In the second half he made changes after a lot of pundits and fans kept pointing out what a sh*t show our defence and goalkeeper was. He's solved it now so it's a none issue and in the past. Your garbage is in the present.

You came on here just to speak negatively about a good performance, call a decent side part timers, speak shoddy grammar and actually there was a divide over certain issues regarding Klopp. You and Kopite78 can pretend like it never happened, but I remember it clearly. Klopp is well respected by all now, but before Mignolet alone was causing an issue. People were asking, why hasn't Mignolet been dropped? Can we trust Klopp to get a good goalkeeper? Oh.. you seem to forget we had early exits in domestic cups, we've won nothing yet under Klopp. The champions league progress quelled the doubters... but if you and Kopite78 can't admit there was a section of extremely fed up fans that even started questioning Klopp in the first half of the season, you're just deluding yourselves.

Why on earth you brought this up in this thread is mind boggling. There's another thread for Klopp.

Was half watching the England friendly v Costa Rica.

Rashford and Loftus-Cheek, as well as Trent obviously, looked in the best shape.

I've been a bit surprised however that we haven't seen Southgate's first team starting both games.  You really shouldn't be titting about with your lineup this close to a tournament in my opinion.

I'd probably take a point on Rashford instead of Sterling.  Think Sterling's too wasteful in front of goal not to mention the risks with him being a diving tw*t.

Still think there is a role for Vardy and when it comes to the Belgium game, where England will probably be expected to counter attack more I think he would be a good goal threat against them.

England should easily qualify out of that group.  If they didn't then Southgate would have to get sacked.  If they get through the group they've got a 50/50 chance of beating either Poland or Colombia in the knockout - not the worst route to the Quarter Finals - where they will definitely be packing for home.

no, if your grammar was sh*te i wouldn't really care usually. I just didn't like your England bashing after a good performance. If they played sh*te I get it and would accept your comments more. Everyone else is in agreement they played well. Then you try to discredit the result by discrediting Costa Rica by calling the them part timers. Costa Rica are actually an okay side. You put THE END because you think you got the last word in.

      THE END.

                                 Butland
                       Cahill     Dier      Maguirre
      Walker                                               Young
                          Henderson
                                             Alli
      Sterling                                          Rashford
                                 Kane

I would play like that and when we're attacking Dier can move up and when we are defending, he can drop back to out box.

not sure about that. Dier and Hendo on at the same time will cause them to get in each others way to the extent it could cause problems. We've not done that in the past for a reason. Dier and Henderson are more interchangeable in my opinion, which we will need if we get to knockout stages.

I would remove Dier, move Cahill centrally and Walker and play Tripper or Trent.
