Started here but won't be starting against West Ham on this evidence. Clearly yet to come to terms to Liverpool's style of play, and even the chance to bolster confidence resulted in a bad penalty miss. Dropped into centre-back after the break.

      https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-player-ratings-gini-wijnaldum-15002318

Huh? Did anyone else think he had a bad game? I thought he was exceptional with Wijnaldum in the first half.

F**k knows what Ian Doyle was drinking tonight. Thought he looked really good. Always looking and passing forward and was able to disrupt play in favour of attack as well as defence. I personally don't get his appraisal of Curtis Jones either. Jones has been a reliable presence throughout pre season who has shown a willingness to get onto the ball but I personally saw little of the 'Always looking to drive play forward' player that Doyle over eggs in his ratings. Got to be honest, if anything I thought he played far more on the safe side as opposed to 'driving things forward'. That's absolutely fine for his level - his pre season has been marked by a safety and relative maturity to his game but false appraisals like that by Ian Doyle proves that he's just another of those journalists who sees a young Scouser in the squad and will do anything to seek Gerrard like qualities in them, which always does more harm than it does good.

      Lovely worked goal.

Haven't seen hardly any pre season so really looking forward to the start of the season now.

      Good to hear.

Gini is such a talented footballer and I hope we see him on top form this season.

Shaqiri definitely playing like a man who wants into that starting XI.
& I'd have him in it. Him & Sturridge as options off the bench though...

Methinks old Jürgen is going to have a whole set of new problems this year keeping talent on the bench happy.

Definitely. Was thinking that when it was all smiles.
Sturridge probably the easiest sell, being that he has watched the CL run from the outside and might just be happy to play a part in the "journey". Shaqiri is definitely chomping at the F***ing bit. Personally I'd go to some form of 4-3-3 or 4-2-4 to get him in the XI, but if he is on the bench regularly it will be interesting to see how that develops. Although he's another player that has been in big teams and moved on so it might be that starting every other game and enjoying the ride is seen as infinitely better than Stoke.

Bit strange only giving him a 5, penalty miss aside he played very well.

If that performance is only a 5 the bar has been set sky high for the expected standard this season.

methinks the don't sit Hendo movement among certain media members may have reared its head.

Wijnaldum was great. He brings a lot when given permission to attack. Keita is awesome. Fabinho was not extraordinary but it feels great to have a good DM protecting the defense: I was impressed by Hendo... I don't like him as a DM but he surely has got a lot of confidence now and his passing has become more efficient.

Our attack is superb, when Mane has such confidence, it can only be good. Firmino could play as no. 10, Klopp should try it. As for Salah, it seems that he's just a game or 2 away from regaining his world class standards.

Shaqiri has been very good too. His passing and chose control is good, calm and composed. I like his attitude: always trying to start an attack.

Lallana has been average. I hope that he regains his form ASAP: he's definitely a good player but needs to find his confidence back.

Huh? Did anyone else think he had a bad game? I thought he was exceptional with Wijnaldum in the first half.

I think he is going to be the signing of the summer for us.

His passing alone makes such a difference, you can see that the easy pass half of the time is to the keeper. But he takes the ball and switches the play across the defence or turns and goes forward.

I don't want to make this into a Fab vs Hendo post but the difference is night and day between the two.

I have a feeling it might actually force Hendo to be a bit more adventurous in the long run too.

As for Shaqiri, the lad is quite quick thinking on the ball isn't he. I'd like to see him play in a midfield three with Keita and Fabinho behind the front three.

Really think his quick passing and eye for a ball could be devestating especially on the many occasions that we break fast.

I think he'd get a fair few assists playing there.

On a side note, as soon as they called Fabinho a pen supreme or whatever they said... I knew he'd miss haha.

I seem to remember them saying something similar about the great Rickie Lambert.

Can't wait for West Ham now, got a feeling we are going to destroy them.

Too late now but we have such attacking options it might have been good to look at a 3 at the back formation over the friendlies.

                              Allison

              Gomez        Virgil        Lovren

                  Henderson        Fabhino

                      Keita            Shaqiri

          Salah            Firmino        Mane

Especially for home games where the other lot are going to park the bus.

So everything through the middle then, not to sure about that tactic?

Yeah, but if we're spending 95% of the game in attack the front 5 will be fairly free to go wherever the space is.

Don't need to go 3 at the back.
Push the fullbacks forward & have Fabinho anchoring in front of the back 2 is effectively the same thing.
Only change needed is how the midfield 3 functions. 2 no 6s or 1 no 6 with Keita or Wijnaldum pushing up or Shaqiri in the midfield 3.
Plenty of options for change from a 4-3-3 template. Think Klopp has stated as such before.

Absolutely bonkers formation. We would be destroyed on the flanks without full backs.

Full backs are essential to Klopps style of football.

Agree. We want to be making the pitch bigger, not smaller and more compact.
