      Curtis Jones Player Thread
      Jul 24, 2018 07:57:13 am
This lad looks like a bit of a talent. I read an article in the Echo about him and it prompted me to look more closely at his impact in our pre season games. For a 17 year old he's a big lad who is quick on the turn, has excellent technique and looks to have enough strength to warrant a few first team run outs this season or at least to be in and around the match day squad.

I'm surprised someone hadn't already started his player thread. I guess because he only turned 17 (and signed professionally) at the end of the Winter transfer period, that there hasn't been the loan moves/speculation our other youngsters get, and therefore much need to talk about him on a forum.

But he's definitely one of our most promising youngsters, and I reckon he'll likely end up doing better than most (if not all) of the current U23s. And having Keita at the club now will be great for his development. He needs to be around first team players who can turn and drive forward from midfield, and show him how to do so at a higher level, not just those who work hard and recirculate possession.

Couldn't agree more on that last point, for some time our midfield has largely consisted of those types of players, hard working industrial players who regularly turn in 7/10 performances but very rarely produce a 9 or a 10. In Keita we've finally got someone who can (and will) hit those heights. Can only be good for a player like Curtis to be around that.

Vs Man City. Again shows promise. Good to see hi. Willing to take shots on and try to go past people. Should have won a pen.

I was impressed with the lad against Man City, just got to hope he continues to develop and gets his chance in the squad. We have had some good players named Jones at Liverpool going back as far as the versatile Bill Jones.

      Like him so far.
Another wide player to add to the potential talent of Kent (I still rate him...lovely player), ojo and Camacho.
Just hope one of these fellas doesn’t flatter to deceive like so many other former liverpiolnyouth player attacking midfielders and forwards.

he is only 17 ffs didn't realise he was so young . OK how do you go from being a really outstanding 17 year old to a regular team fixture.Young Woodburn is going out on loan for the season which is good in one way I guess as long s they don't pick up bad habits.
Having young Trent break through is proof if your good enough Jürgen will give you the chance.

If you are good enough you get your chances eg Sterling, TAA, Gomez, Gerrard, Owen Fowler, Carra etc etc

he isn't 18 until January he should be on his school holidays now. Quite possibly the best Scouser to come through the Ranks since Stevie. According to Jürgen he isn't  shy lad so good for him.

One of the most used players in pre-season, and certainly the most used 'non first teamer'.

Not looked significantly out of place and expecting to see a lot of him on what should be decent domestic cup runs.

Did not show up today. Very poor performance.

Far from it, he looked comfortable on the ball and shone in one particular moment in the first half; beating 2 players with ease and putting in a cross. Second half he wasn’t as good but the whole game he was getting into a decent position but Keita was taking too long on the pass or not passing it all.
Far from a poor performance from him.

Just read this at the beginning of an article in The Atlantic - made me laugh.

"An outrageous night that involves several short tales, the first about Curtis Jones — the scorer of the winning penalty kick following a short run-up that invited some nerves, but certainly not from him. An 18-year-old from the housing estate closest to Liverpool’s city centre that runs beside Jamaica Street and out towards the urban sprawl of Toxteth, he had once told anyone willing to listen at the club’s academy that he was, in fact, an Arsenal fan.

It was only when Steven Gerrard became his coach at under-18 level that this broadcast stopped."

I bet it did stop. I bet it truly did.  :)

He likes having the ball you can see that, a little bit of Lallana in the way he manoeuvres the ball.

By all accounts a confident lad, and to take the last pen off a two step run up, you have to be really!

Yeh agree he is versatile.  The thing is he is only 18, I really hope he stays.   He shouldn't get desperate we are the best team in the world right now, and for him at this stage he is doing very well at his age.  His best place is here not on loan!  I can understand with Brewster because he is a forward we have 5 now and other players like Curtis, Shakiri and OX that can play the role. But with Curtis I quite like him in midfield.

      Sounds like Curtis is staying.

Jürgen was commenting on Rhian Brewster's loan to Swansea in this morning's presser and explained:

"Now he's already training for a long, long period, so it was a good moment to give him on loan and to help Swansea hopefully, and Swansea can help Rhian and then us. That was good. But for the others, I don't see anybody in this moment who would benefit more from a loan spell than from staying with us."

Glad to see that Curtis will be staying for the remainder of the season. I hope he gets some more chances, including in league play.

He played brilliantly in a very poor side in sense of quality. He's a good back-up player.

Won't happen, but I would love to see Jürgen name him in the front three for the West Ham game.

Would be bold since I think that Origi will but he has quality and an eye for goal.

First teen to score in back to back appearances for us since Sterling.

Bit puzzled by a midfielder playing in the front 3?

Lines up on the left of a front three for the U23s more often than not.

“I think Curtis can play in two positions – left of the front three and in midfield, too. He’s possibly more Adam Lallana than Sadio Mane in terms of his approach and capabilities.”

This lad has everything he needs to be a player. the problem all these lads have is getting time on the pitch in meaningful games. The standards now are so high the results so important its difficult for a manager to select young lads unless forced to do so. If we don't beat Shrewsbury it might be the last game he starts for us this seasons so you can see how these lads get frustrated.
My hope is we win the league with 6 or 7 games to go then they can play and rest the big players for the CL.

I would love to see Jürgen select him for tonight's game. He would do the job, I'm sure of it. I realize there are older players including Divock who are more likely to get the nod, but at some point a manager has to pick a young player in a meaningful match for him to really have that opportunity.

Its getting more and more difficult for these lads to break through and more and more important to win every game Managers are under immense pressure at both ends of the Table. I think we will see him on as a sub a few more times then start getting first team chances but who does he replace we are Champions of the world these lads will not like losing their place to anyone

Will get the last 5 games of the league season if we take care of business early I would guess. Be nice to see what some of the best young lads can do playing with the first team.

No question about not players wanting to lose their place. In this case, Sadio is out injured - that is what provides more of an opportunity for Jürgen to select him tonight. Every great player who came out of our own system, Fowler, Owen, McManaman, Trent - they all were given a first team chance at some point. As I say, probably won't happen, but I wish it would.

If he's good enough he's old enough, and I think this lad has shown throughout the season that he's good enough.

this team though is far better than any team they played in and its over 20 years since they played . wasn't Trent's debut against UTD at their place and he did well.

Fair enough Walt. I'd still love to see Curtis on from the start. So hard to break through at a big club, let along the best team in the world, which is what we are at the moment.

Got a feeling we will be seeing a lot more of Curtis in the coming months, regardless of what happens at Anfield against Shrewsbury.

Feels like he is naturally becoming the next youth player to get the chance to make a name for himself in this first-team squad, he is already showing promising signs but let's see how the rest of the season goes for him!

Again, would love to see him from the start vs. Southampton. divock went off injured and has played two matches in a row now. Perfect chance to get Curtis a Premier League start.

If Origi is unfit, I prefer him over Minamino at the moment. He has the skill and an eye for a good run and goal. He should not need to worry to much about his defence.
