      Passengers stranded as airline collapses

A budget airline that began offering long-haul flights from UK airports including Stansted to the US earlier this year has collapsed.

Primera Air said it was ceasing all operations at midnight on Monday after 14 years of operations.

Flights to Washington and New York due to leave Stansted on Monday night were grounded and passengers have been told not to go to the airport on Tuesday.

One flight from Birmingham to Malaga arrived on Monday evening.

The Danish-registered airline is not part of the Civil Aviation Authority's ATOL Protection scheme, which covers only passengers booked on package holidays.

The airline, which had 15 planes, began offering low-cost flights from Stansted and Birmingham to the US and Canada earlier this year.

Flights from Manchester to Malaga were due to start later this month.

The regulator has advised passengers who have travelled on a Primera flight they will need to make their own arrangements to return to the UK, and to contact their travel insurer or travel agent.

People who had booked directly with the airline on future flights will not be covered either, the CAA advises.

Passengers who paid by credit card may be protected by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and are advised to check with card issuers. Similar cover may apply if a Visa debit card was used.

The Icelandic-owned airline said it had failed to secure long-term financing, meaning it had "no choice" but to file for bankruptcy.

Passengers have contacted the BBC to say they have been left stranded by the airline.

Canadian Angela Dorau was in a queue to board a plane from Paris to Toronto with her husband when there was an announcement saying the flight had been cancelled.

She said: "Everybody was stranded. Currently my husband and I are in a dumpy motel by the airport trying to frantically scrounge together the funds to pay for another way home."

They are yet to find an alternative flight home and she says what was supposed to be a budget trip looks like costing them an extra €2,000.

Primera's decision to start competing with other low-cost long-haul operators such as Norwegian and Wow appears to have led to its demise.

Signs that the airline was in trouble came in August, when it said short-haul flights from Birmingham to seven European destinations would end on 3 September.

It also blamed the late arrival of new aircraft from Airbus that forced it to cancel flights and lease planes.

"Weighting the potential losses due to future delivery delays ... and bearing in mind the difficult environment that airlines are facing now due to low prices and high fuel costs, we have decided to cease operations now," the company said.

Five departures from Copenhagen and four from Billund on Tuesday are expected to be cancelled.

When it began longhaul operations from Stansted in May, Primera was offering flights to New York's Newark airport, Boston, Washington DC and Toronto starting at £149 each way.

It had planned to start flying from Madrid to New York, Boston and Toronto next month from €149 each way.

Most of the airline's business involved taking Scandinavian holidaymakers to destinations such as Spain, Greece, Italy, Egypt and Turkey.

She’s an absolute joke is May.

A dumpy f**king scrote who keeps talking about ‘the will of the people’, yet ironically seems reluctant to be held accountable by the people in any way whatsoever.

I honestly think this current government might be about to f**k up the UK for generations to come.

May backed down from having a right go at Russia and Putin in her party keynote speech. Instead she took a cheap swipe at Corbyn.

Not once did she utter the word "Chequers". She is now backing down from that after saying it's the only way forward. The rest of her speech was a diatribe of self congratulations. Not a word about Javid sending back as many of the Windrush generation that he can get away with. No mention of starving the NHS of funds for 8 years. No mention of Police budget cut to the bone. No mention of the blatant skimming benefits off the disabled. No mention of Arms sales to Saudi Arabia. No mention of scraping the Department for Climate change. No mention of abolishing the Child poverty Unit. No mention of scraping the Charity Commissioner. No mention of cutting the Education budget to the bone, while proposing the reintroduction of Grammar schools. No mention of making Johnson Foreign Secretary, a man who call blacks "Piccaninnies" and heaps abuse on Islamic faith, not to mention having a cheap pop at the City of Liverpool.

A spiteful Tory if ever there was one.

Does the comedy circuit, the endless panel shows, guest appearances on Live at the Apollo or wherever need a kick up it's complacent backside. Personally I've been pissed off with them for a while now. And does it show how pompous and how far the the"established" comics are up their own self righteous  backsides when they condemn somebody like Andrew Lawrence, basically because he doesn't tow the comedy line.

There should be room in comedy for a right wing perspective. Comedian should be judged on how funny they are, not by some perceived pre judged class based standard.

Ashers 'gay cake' row: Bakers win Supreme Court appeal - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-45789759

Not sure if this story reached you guys over the water but curious to see the thoughts.

Now I haven't followed this story that closely as the 'news' over here in Northern Ireland bores the hell out of me for the most part but heard about this verdict on the radio today.

Long and short of it was a gay man asked a cake to be baked with a message on it that the owners didn't want to bake due to them being born again Christians.

Personally I would bake any cake anyone asked me if I was paid for it and class myself as pretty liberal but can't help thinking the bakery was within its rights to choose not to bake this cake.

The bakery in question is pretty well known over here as a 'Christian'  bakery and I feel the man targeted them to make a point when there are  hundreds of bakery's who would have baked the cake no questions asked.

      Thoughts?

      Exactly.
Bit of a storm in a teacup for me.
It gets a bit dodgy when people start to push for their rights trumping someones beliefs, but I do think if christians are going to quote Leviticus (which is f**king nuts) then they should live by all of it, and not just the parts that suit them.

We've had similar things over here...believe one case went all the way to our Supreme Court.

Here's my take (not that anyone cares) and I consider myself a through and through born again Bible thumping Christian (just for perspective)....

I'm not sure that religion (spirituality, belief, faith, however you want to refer to it) really should be intertwined into what governs local businesses. If I were a business owner making cakes and a gay couple came to me wanting me to make a cake for their wedding, I'd probably go ahead and do it, as long as I felt like they weren't trying to "use" me in some way as you alluded Si (for political purposes). I mean if I'm a business owner, I don't do a background check on every single customer to see if they met my "moral standard". I certainly have opinions and views about what I think is right and wrong, godly and not, but at the end of the day the most important thing I get from my reading, studying and understanding of the Bible is to love others as you would love yourself and that includes anyone that does anything that might be contrary to the teachings of the Bible. If you are refusing service to a gay couple simply based on the fact that you believe their being together is a sin...are you also not serving liars, thiefs, adulterers, prideful people, etc....because those are all sins as well (according to the Bible).

That all being said.....why on earth should anyone be able to tell a business owner who they can and can't serve? If I have some belligerent person come into my place of business, berating customers and making a scene...I have the right to tell them to pound sand. So honestly, shouldn't I be able to tell anyone I want to pound sand for whatever reason I want? Ultimately, it's up to the business owner (or should be) to decide if refusing service to someone will be worth the negative word of mouth (and in this day and age, the negative social media and online reviews) that it may generate.

In this specific case, I think both sides probably could have used to practice a little bit more common sense and caring. The gay couple doesn't want to be made to feel like second class folks and the baker has moral opinions (valid or not) that they feel prohibits them from serving these folks. It's an unfortunate impasse but shouldn't both sides just say "thanks but no thanks" and go about their business? Like you said Si, there are other bakers, and if the baker in question doesn't want to server people, they probably won't be in business too long anyway.

I think it's not so much that the cake maker didn't want to make the cake for a gay man, it was the fact he disagreed with the message (rightly or wrongly, and I think it's wrongly but that's beside the point) and therefore didn't want to put it on a cake. If a heterosexual, bisexual or asexual person had asked for the same message I think the result would have been the same.

It'd be a problem if the cake maker was discriminating based on the customers sexuality, gender, ethnicity or anything else, but if he doesn't want to put a particular slogan or message (whatever it is) on a cake because of his own beliefs that is completely within his rights. Glad it got overturned in the end. I don't agree with the cake maker's beliefs but he's within his rights not to bake a cake with a message he disagrees with.

I think this also raises an important point about militant, targeted behaviour.
Clearly the chap knew what he was doing, but went ahead anyway to make a political point, and perhaps even wanted to get the bakery closed down.
I don't think militant behaviour does anyone any favours (mostly) and it is often counter productive.
There are exceptions of course, and sometimes militant behaviour is the only thing that will get results, but that's not the case here IMO.

I don't usually get involved in this kind of thing, but if he targeted the bakery based on religious values than that's an utter disgrace. Personally I don't think religion and business go well together, but it's personal choice. As a straight person I don't expect to be included in all areas of society. If I were told I couldn't go into bar because I'm not of their sexuality (I've never been to one anyway) I'd just go to a regular bar. I wouldn't try to sue them. The world is a better place for being diverse, but not everything has to be exactly the same or fear lawsuits.

Aditya Chakrabortty is one of the few excellent journalists left.
George Monbiot has his moments as well, and a few of his investigative pieces have been very good indeed.

However, none of them really want to address the elephant in the room, which is Fractional Reserve Banking.

Confused with this, does this mean the guardian is back in favour with the corbynistas after this boycott the guardian nonsense a few weeks ago It genuinely bemuses me how thin skinned how a lot of corbyn supporters are, can't take amy criticism of their dear leader or anyone who doesn't toe the line. Not sure what's worse the chaotic fuckwit tories or the cult of corbyn

Criticism is one thing, all leaders should face criticism.

Jumping on a bandwagon with the red top rags and making sh*t up is quite another.

For me, it's not the man himself, but his policies.

How come hate crimes against religious and ethnic minorities have sharply increased in the last two years then as per official FBI reports?

Mass gun killing will always happen while the disgusting gun laws in that country exist. But that shouldn't be used as an excuse to cover up the surge in racist violence that is occurring in America.

I don't give a f**k about FBI reports Obama considered a peaceful man dropped over 25000 bombs on people how do you think the recipients feel.
We have become more and more violent in the last 50 years and the increase in violence shows no sign of diminishing and then if you put more guns into these violent peoples hands then sh*t is going to happen. Trump is just a weird moron but its dangerous to lay the blame for everything at his feet. We are in sh*t street.

Why do you not give a f**k about what the FBI reports? Never said Obama was a peaceful man did I? This is Trump's America and his rhetoric and paranoia is enabling such attacks ever since he took to the stump in 2015 and started insulting and treating Muslims, Mexicans and everything else that isn't a white sexist, racist male as subhuman.

Terrible news. Coupled with Glenn Hoddle's news (and it's great to hear he is responding well to treatment) and the truly horrible images coming from Leicester, the football headlines have been really scary today.

Gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger found dead in prison

Infamous Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger has been found dead in a US federal prison in West Virginia.

The 89-year-old was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the maximum security facility shortly after being transferred there from a Florida jail.

US media report the former mob boss was killed on Tuesday morning at the penitentiary.

The life of Bulger, who was convicted in 2013 of 11 murders, inspired several films

He was captured in California in 2011 after a 16-year manhunt.

The former leader of South Boston's Winter Hill gang inspired the film Black Mass featuring Johnny Depp, and The Departed, which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2007.

His death comes on the same day that he was transferred to the Hazelton penitentiary in West Virginia, which houses 1,385 inmates, according to reports.

An inmate with mafia ties is now under investigation for Bulger's killing, three sources briefed on the incident told the Boston Globe.

Boston-based WFXT-TV, a Fox affiliate, reports that Bulger was killed hours after being admitted to the general inmate population at the facility.

The Bureau of Prisons declined to comment last week on why Bulger - who was serving a life sentence - was being moved from the Florida penitentiary.

But according to the Globe, Bulger was transferred to Florida in 2014 from another prison in Arizona after his relationship with a female psychologist who was counselling him attracted the attention of prison authorities.

The details of his death have not been announced, but a local union official for correctional workers at the prison told CBS that a "homicide" occurred on Tuesday morning.

"This is the third homicide in seven months at our facility," Richard Heldreth said in a phone interview. "We are very understaffed, we are short about 40 officers."

A Department of Corrections statement on Tuesday confirmed his death in custody, and said the FBI had launched an investigation.

The statement made no mention of the cause of death, but said that "no staff or other inmates were injured, and at no time was the public in danger."

US Attorney for the Massachusetts district Andrew Lelling said that his office had been informed of Bulger's death, adding: "Our thoughts are with his victims and their families."
