Billy, who do you think was better, Peter or John Barnes?

That is a difficult one I think John Barnes was more direct but Peter had the ability to beat 2 or 3 defenders. Also when Peter joined us from Preston Both Ends  in 1963 he made all the difference and enabled us to win the league in 1964 and 1966 and the F.A.Cup in 1965.Peter may have passed on but his memories will live for ever.

If you saw Steve Highway play on the left. Peter on the right was all of that plus some !

Saw him play many times. Great player. Sad loss to the LFC family.

      Robby   I agree.

Saw both play and Barnes was brilliant..... but the mazy runs of Thommo past players was pure magic and jaw dropping to watch.

Harrismo sums it up well ....

Terrible news. Peter Thompson was my all time favourite winger.
Watched him so many times, always a buzz of anticipation when he got the ball.
He would show it to the full back then an amazing turn of pace, burn off the full back leaving him floundering.

He had fantastic close control and dribbling skill but more than anything it was that amazing turn of pace from virtually a standing start. Could lash them in right or left foot.
A real privilege and pleasure to have been lucky enough to see him play. Probably suffered from Alf Ramsey not playing wingers, but for that he would've won more than the 16 caps he gained.

      RIP Peter Thompson

      RIP Peter Thompson

The accolades from Bill Shankly says it all, i never seen Thommo play, however when your manager says stuff like he did, then indeed Thommo must have been one hell of a player!

Condolences to his family at this sad time.

Just read the obituary in the Guardian about him.

Sounded like a real stalwart and a hell of a player. RIP and thank you for helping building the club into what it is today.

Still love the story about Shankly bollocking him at the start of one pre-season. His crime - buying a blue car!!
