      January News Stories, 2019
      Jan 06, 2019 08:08:33 am
Another year and the suicides caused by the Department of Work and Pensions forcing people to work who can’t continue. Baffles me how these ‘assessors’ have the power to overrule a doctor who goes through years of training to obtain the qualification and holds a position of trust in society.

      https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/sick-dad-kills-himself-days-13817907

This Tory government have blood on their hands with their policies.

Need to be careful with this stuff they could be saying anyone who receives and acknowledges this signal will be destroyed to make way for a new solar highway.

Radio signals travel at the speed of light. This means it must have taken 1.5 billion years light for us to receive the signal from when it was sent. That's because 1 light year is the distance light travels at the speed of light for one year.

Even if these radio signals were from aliens, the physical speed limit of the universe is the speed of light, some scientists say if it were possible to travel faster then people would move forward through time. The only credible theory of being able to return back to their time would be if the traveler created a wormhole on the way forward, so going backwards through a wormhole faster than the speed of light could reverse the time travel. It's not credible because inside a wormhole the strings are unstable to a point matter would be broken, crushed and stretched... so the travelers wouldn't complete the journey in one piece. If the radio signals are from aliens they would be unlikely to be still around after 150 billion years as well. What makes this story strange is the universe is 13.8 billion years old, so it's strange how the signals took 150 billion years to arrive. If there is any life out there, it's likely too far away to make any noticeable difference to us.

      You “Mc/Mac”rang sir?

      Honestly don’t know.

Timing stinks but it’s quite a charge sheet.

Outstanding Westminster parliamentarian - absolutely rang rings round umpteen PMs and Oppo leaders.

Critical and unecessary failings in the Indy Referendum - even allowing for making it much, much closer than it was expected to be at outset.

I’m cynical but I’m not gonna call umpteen women claiming assault / rape etc liars.

Innocent till proven guilty, I enjoy listening to the man and I felt for him when he couldn’t get Scotland over the independence line..

Can this be politically motivated? Smear campaign?...

Be interesting to hear Scotia’s & Franklys thoughts on this..

Accusations of a conspiracy/smear campaign just seem ludicrous and potentially threatens to make targets of the people who felt strong enough to go to the police over this. That the arrest and charge has come entirely within the Scottish police (devolved power) and Scottish judicial system - forever unique and independent of the judiciary of the rest of England - only makes such a claim of 'conspiracy' look even more ridiculous as to plunder deep into the abyss of ignorance and touching stupidity.

I've made my views clear on Salmond, I've never liked him and I still don't. A talented politician for sure - his ability to drag socialist Scotland and fuse it with the more conservative/rural parts of Scotland (not so unlike Blair's electoral strategy) is the blueprint by which all political parties in Britain should aspire to. As much as I hated it, that 2011 Scottish Parliament election victory was something incredible and in history (should Scotland become independent) it will probably be seen as one of the most important dates in the nation's history. It was a critical juncture in the development of devolution and Scottish independence. But as I said I've always disliked the man as I see him as something of a bully and narcissist. Like all narcissists he likes to take control of the narrative as he proved today - never missing the opportunity to blow hard into a tv microphone. Control is everything for those type of individuals.

And for people thinking that such an arrest will have a negative effect on the independence question, well that is ridiculous as well. He is yesterdays man - why else would he be presenting a cheap chat show on a news channel? This is a man who has no political career anymore and he very much lives in Sturgeon's shadow in terms of influence and power - what purpose and threat does he carry to Sturgeon let alone a UK establishment? Since she became FM she's been a breath of fresh air by comparison. I think we've seen in the last couple of years, probably the only politician in Britain that has been consistent on the Brexit question. And I certainly don't doubt Sturgeon's integrity in the same way I did with Salmond. After all, Sturgeon was the person whose principles came ahead of everything else and opened up Scottish Government investigations on him back in the summer. The independence movement, like all large movements, are bigger than any one individual. It's heavily dependent on what Sturgeon does of course but it long ceased being dependent on Salmond's own political strength.

And as for those on the other side of the independence argument, I've seen articles from unionist publications taking glee from today's news salivating over a so called SNP 'civil war' between Sturgeon and Salmond. But that is tasteless and nothing could expose the depravity of certain sections of the press more than making political capital over something as serious as attempted rape and sexual assault. But then again, are any of us surprised?

Just to go back to my point at the top, Salmond isn't a victim of a conspiracy. If people think he was then ask yourself why this didn't come before the referendum? Why not after he became SNP leader in 2004? Why not before Harvey Weinstein...oh hang on. That's it. At the end of the day, he's just another establishment figure who could potentially be brought down by the MeToo movement in an era where women are now confident enough to come forward and testify against those men in power who aggressively abused and corrupted that power. It could take down Salmond and be sure there are far bigger names that it will take down in future.

Nope, wrong generation, most those who lived through the war understand the good done by the EU, it's the baby boomers, the generation after you're on about it.

Just came in to post about this.

Has anyone seen the documentary? To be honest the question has always been there and let’s be serious, what middle aged man hangs around with young children and has them stay the night as we all know occurred? If he wasn’t famous it wouldn’t even be a question.

Doesn’t deserve any adulation or benefit of doubt imo.

Remember when Martin Bashir did that bizarre ITV scoop/documentary on him way back in the early 2000s? Bashir still gets harassed by Jackson obsessives to this day.

This documentary film is apparently going to be shown on Channel 4 in the spring though given how harrowing it sounds I don't think it will be too high up on my must watch list.

I think in art you are allowed to separate the person from the art. I mean the list of artists/composers in centuries past that are lauded but we're also pretty terrible individuals is long. With Jackson there's no doubting that he made some of the biggest/greatest records ever seen and I suppose the adoration he received from every corner of the entertainment business propped up a barrier where he was made to be indestructible.

But all that doesn't give him a free pass/excusal over his disturbing criminal ways and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot more people now feel challenged about listening to his music once this film comes out. The guy should have died in a prison in all honesty.

On the Venezuelan crisis. While Mr. Maduro, the Venezuelan President might preside of a corrupt government, and there are plenty of those around the World, and that his election is tainted with vote rigging ( again plenty of evidence of that in other countries) was Trump right to recognise the opposition leader Mr.Guaido as President. If Maduro didn't win legit then claiming victory for another in a bent election is hardly fair.

The UK and others  have taken a similar step and have even demanded an election within 8 days. Smacks of interference into the internal politics of a sovereign state. No problem in calling for fair elections but to jump in a call an unelected man the new president will simply inflame tensions within that country. Makes a drama out of a crisis.

Hypocrisy once again from western governments who wish to install a puppet government..The election was not rigged as UN observers oversaw the balloting & also the election was done electronically...

& if May does not call an election in 8 days I’ll recognise Corbyn as the legitimate PM ...

Just sent a comment to BBC news claiming the 2017 General Election was rigged by the right wing media and if Teresa May doesn't call a new General Election within 8 days I will formally recognise Mr. Jeremy Corbyn as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and all her Dominions..

Is there anything May won't do or say to frighten the country into accepting her flawed deal. Lost track of all the threats issued in the event of a No Deal.

Mugabe had $750,000 stolen from his house. He had the money stashed in a suitcase. Wonder where he got the money...must have had a part-time job and just saved the money up..

No and I recognise the hardship the Venezuelan people are going thru. That's why I raised the subject in the first place. A lot of the economic problems are due to sanctions imposed by Trump and pressure applied to other countries in the region not to cut deals with Venezuela.

Plus the lower oil prices have impacted on the Venezuelan economy. Corruption and incompetent economic policy no doubt play a part. The rights of any sovereign Country to self determine their own destiny and future must be respected. For the US and the rest to recognise the unelected Guaido will only deepen divisions and lead to further unrest.

The US policies with regard to South America are self serving and very often cause divisions.Even more so with a maverick like Trump in charge.

It's far worse than just the sanctions.
Read about how the US forces Venezuela to ship oil to the US for refining, then it gets shipped back to Venezuela, before being sold to the US for less than the refining and repeated trips have cost them.

It's f**king scandalous that this behaviour is tolerated.

No one can honestly sit here and say that a Presidency in Venezuela that has continually stripped and curbed the powers of parliament, loaded the highest court in the land with corrupt loyalists and has indulged in some of the worst human rights abuses this decade, is somehow an 'innocent' party in all of this. Amnesty's own website has an extended list of all the abuses taking place there including but not limited to arbitrary arrests, torture, police brutality illegal detention, losses to a right of food and health care for certain sections of society and attacks and threats to trans people.

But I get you and the US threatening intervention on behalf of the opposition risks destroying all the institutions within Venezuela that would need to be present in order to get the country to prosper economically and politically once more. And the Presidency of the US has absolutely no moral or political right to claim support to the opposition given Trump's own corrupt and treasonous ways by which he entered the White House. That man, and with it the whole of the US, has no credibility or legitimacy in political terms at this moment. Nor does the UK, given our own government's suicidal and glee ridden fixation with Brexit (which, like the US vote in 2016 was also corrupted and infiltrated by illegal means).
