      Biggest name signed by LFC
      Jan 08, 2019 03:37:07 pm
Who is the biggest name the club has ever signed?

To me we have traditionally made world famous players rather then bought them. Take Kenny. Known and respected at Celtic and Scotland with us he was held in the world class bracket. Suarez like wise. Dare I say VVD can be classed as being known and respected but within a year of being here now regarded by many as the worlds best.

So who have we signed who was already regarded as world class?

      Hmmm great question B78.

I love the idea that however good they are......this club makes ‘em better.

Three I’d throw in for discussion would be -

      Jari Litmanen
      Alisson Becker
      Fernando Torres

Jari was defo established through a long career.

Alisson was the most sought after keeper in the world.

Nando is an interesting one because he had been mooted as the big prospect for what seemed like ages when we got him......though I still think he exceeded expectations for 2 seasons.

Jari was class but so underused by us Im not sure I could claim him the biggest signing made. Torres might be the one alright.

Barnes worth a shout? Or was he another we made into world class

Ah - I conflated the OP in my head into “already world class” in my answer.

Digger is a good shout - couple years after his worldy in the Maracana if I remember correctly.

Think he was seen as gifted but inconsistent before he came to us - though truthfully given the time there could have been a touch of casual racism in that........

Could make an argument for Xabi Alonso. Captained Sociedad aged 20, guided his team to the Champions League for the first time ever. Real Madrid were after him too I believe.

The honest answer should be Jürgen Klopp !!

But in terms of players, I would say Virgil, Alisson and Suarez. I was actually in disbelief given the season we had and were having, that the groundwork for Suarez was laid and almost done, with you-know-who still our manager!

Virgil quite simply bcos City, Scum and Chelsea wanted to sign him, and there were rumors that Barca considered him before they opted to wait until the summer to activate Lenglet's release clause.

And that was possible, only cos of Jürgen!

      I'd go along with that.
Benitez and Klopp were the last two big signings the club made in recent history.
Statements of intent that then were followed by "Marquee" signings.
Under Benitez, Torres was probably the standout as himself and Villa were the stars of Spain at the time.
Under Klopp, van Dijk and Alisson are the ones that stand out for me as big players that other teams wanted but who came here.
I'm picking van Dijk and Alisson because they are the top tier players that came straight in to the team and transformed it.
Salah we didn't know how good he was going to be and we've yet to see how good Fabinho or Keita will ultimately be,
but those two of recent times are markers.

I honestly can't name anyone from the 99s till today because we improved lots of them: Alonso, Torres, Suarez, Reina, Johnson, Mascherano, etc

Even Benitez and Klopp have improved here!

They were good players but we improved them to be World Class here or somewhere else!

We are World class with a stunning culture/religion and I'm not being biased!

( I always questioned Rafa's sanity with  that one ..... he attempted .....and succeeded)

Especially with keane's statement about rafa wanting to play left wing

It has to be Fernando Torres. Given that he was already an established star at Atletico and one of the first names on an incredible Spain team sheet by time he signed for us. It seems between the years of 2004-2007 he had been linked with every major European club around. The Mancs thought they were getting him in 2006 yet come the summer of 2007 he signed for us. And yet it was a relatively cheap deal even back then (albeit made possible by us sending Luis Garcia the other way). More high profile names were going to follow...or so we thought. His signing was nothing but a false dawn if anything, covering up the cracks that were already starting to appear under the treacherous ownership of Hicks and Gillett.

I suppose Bolo Zenden is another who came here with one helluva CV.

Good shout. A bit forgotten about but a solid player he was.

Nicolas Anelka anybody? All be it on loan, should have been a permanent signing but for Houllier to massively f**k up and choose Diouf instead. We missed out big time there.

Alisson a good shout, so is Morientes, loved it when we signed him but then he turned out to be sh*t...Morientes that is, obviously.

Of the current squad , Becker and VVD.

As to years past I’d have to go with Kenny.

Suarez was a wild card.  We knew we were getting a player but had no idea how good he could be.

Much like a lot of our signings.  Take Salah for instance.  Bought him for a song and a year later he’s a Ballon D’or candidate.

Yeah but I trump that with Karl Heinz Riedle. was proper buzzing on a beach in Crete when I read we signed him.

Was so pleased we signed Riedle as well Brian.

For me I think it's Torres.

He was talked about as the next big superstar player and linked with quite a few clubs just before we bought him and from day one pretty much he was fantastic and for a spell easily the best centre forward in Europe.

We've signed a lot of world class players, but yeah very few who had already established themselves as world class before we signed them.

I'd probably go Litmanen. (Morientes was a big name but probably not quite world class. Ditto Marcus Babbel, good though he was.)

Suarez, Torres, Kenny D, Barnes and a few more were all probably already world class when we signed them, but maybe hadn't yet fully proved it.

The last name to cause a stir was Alisson Becker in my mind.

Virgil Van Dijk too. Maybe not so much on reputation when he signed, but the difference this lad has made sent ripples down our defensive folklore.

      Great times.

Worth it for his goal against Everton back in March 2006 (you'll also get Phil Neville's cracking header into the net...for us)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utgsVDrfZ_M

Also scored a cracker against Tottenham not long before it (first goal in this clip)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbHw0XZUX-c

Played a blinder against Chelsea in the cup semi final at Old Trafford in April 2006 from what I recall as well. Terrible luck with injuries but certainly showed glimpses of what he was all about. A fine player on his day.

Nice little topic Brian, it's a tough one at that. I'll only speak from my time as anything before would be hearsay.

The one truly world class player that stands out in my time who came with as big a rep/CV would be Fernando Morientes, a global star who had won countless trophies.

As many have said we've not really been know for the signings of the real A listers, more of nurturing there talents into become ones.

A lot of great shouts in here, but for me personally when we signed Torres it felt huge, it felt like a game changer, that he could single handedly close the gap for us. Almost every other signing mentioned (that I’ve been around for) felt like a good step or felt that they would help us, but Torres felt much more significant. Maybe it was the circumstances around the rest of football at the time, or the market and how far behind everyone else we were, but I got the biggest buzz out of any signing from Torres.

Alisson is a good shout, was already well known as one of the top few keepers in the world when we got him recently. Was a huge coup for us.

But will go with Torres too. Thought at the time Rafa had done brilliant, never thought we'd sign him. And what a signing he was. A shadow of his former self when he left,  but when he joined, well ...

I think a big difference in the two is that we feel comfortable competing for the likes of Alisson now, whereas at the time we were regularly a market or two below the likes of Torres.

Yep, good point - though still was surprised we managed to get Alisson - we still don't have quite the spending power of a Barca, RM or Citeh, and he'd not be a bit out of place there.

But Torres at the time was a real surprise, decent price too. Was really impressed with Rafa's Spanish connections.
