Nicolas Anelka anybody? All be it on loan, should have been a permanent signing but for Houllier to massively f**k up and choose Diouf instead. We missed out big time there.

Alisson a good shout, so is Morientes, loved it when we signed him but then he turned out to be sh*t...Morientes that is, obviously.

Of the current squad , Becker and VVD.

As to years past I’d have to go with Kenny.

Suarez was a wild card.  We knew we were getting a player but had no idea how good he could be.

Much like a lot of our signings.  Take Salah for instance.  Bought him for a song and a year later he’s a Ballon D’or candidate.

How about Bill Shankly,Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan,as the thread does not stipulate players only I thought I would add these illustrious names.Oh and add Peter Robinson to the above three as well.

Kenny for me, although a whole host of others to chose from, Ray Clemence & Keegan a bargain at the time from Scunthorpe.

Where it all started to go wrong for Houllier.
Thought he had a great finish to the season and was gutted when the loan wasn't made permanent.

Yeah but I trump that with Karl Heinz Riedle. was proper buzzing on a beach in Crete when I read we signed him.

Was so pleased we signed Riedle as well Brian.

For me I think it's Torres.

He was talked about as the next big superstar player and linked with quite a few clubs just before we bought him and from day one pretty much he was fantastic and for a spell easily the best centre forward in Europe.

David Speedy,, bet you had all forgotten about a man who was not s tall as his name. I still need to check to see if he did play for us.
he did score 6 goals in 12 games before Souness got shut

We've signed a lot of world class players, but yeah very few who had already established themselves as world class before we signed them.

I'd probably go Litmanen. (Morientes was a big name but probably not quite world class. Ditto Marcus Babbel, good though he was.)

Suarez, Torres, Kenny D, Barnes and a few more were all probably already world class when we signed them, but maybe hadn't yet fully proved it.

Joe Louis!! While he was based nearby as an American serviceman during WWII.

An equaliser at Old Trafford and two goals in a derby win made up half those six goals.

The last name to cause a stir was Alisson Becker in my mind.

Virgil Van Dijk too. Maybe not so much on reputation when he signed, but the difference this lad has made sent ripples down our defensive folklore.

      Great times.

      Exacfly.

Glad I raised the topic though. Weve signed very few world class players. But we have made some serious world class players. A fine thing to do

Damn, good shout,i was kinda outta the loop footy wise for the 90's but reading about his signing in the irish emigrant paper or a two week old brit paper would of been a  :o moment. The Barnes/ Beardsley double signing was pretty big at the time,no?

Harry Kewell for 5m felt like the bargain of the century but turnout daylight robbery!

Worth it for his goal against Everton back in March 2006 (you'll also get Phil Neville's cracking header into the net...for us)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utgsVDrfZ_M

Also scored a cracker against Tottenham not long before it (first goal in this clip)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbHw0XZUX-c

Played a blinder against Chelsea in the cup semi final at Old Trafford in April 2006 from what I recall as well. Terrible luck with injuries but certainly showed glimpses of what he was all about. A fine player on his day.

I thought Joe Louis was on a promotional tour when he signed for L.F.C.on the pitch at Anfield. The tour included visiting American forces based in the U.K.

Nice little topic Brian, it's a tough one at that. I'll only speak from my time as anything before would be hearsay.

The one truly world class player that stands out in my time who came with as big a rep/CV would be Fernando Morientes, a global star who had won countless trophies.

As many have said we've not really been know for the signings of the real A listers, more of nurturing there talents into become ones.

Torres, Kewell, Alisson yes, Litmanen was also a big name, no?
Also Fernando Morientes was a big name at the time, as mentioned above.
