Technically the re-signing of Ian Rush.

I would say Fernando Torres was already a big name in 2007.

A lot of great shouts in here, but for me personally when we signed Torres it felt huge, it felt like a game changer, that he could single handedly close the gap for us. Almost every other signing mentioned (that Iā€™ve been around for) felt like a good step or felt that they would help us, but Torres felt much more significant. Maybe it was the circumstances around the rest of football at the time, or the market and how far behind everyone else we were, but I got the biggest buzz out of any signing from Torres.

Alisson is a good shout, was already well known as one of the top few keepers in the world when we got him recently. Was a huge coup for us.

But will go with Torres too. Thought at the time Rafa had done brilliant, never thought we'd sign him. And what a signing he was. A shadow of his former self when he left,  but when he joined, well ...

I think a big difference in the two is that we feel comfortable competing for the likes of Alisson now, whereas at the time we were regularly a market or two below the likes of Torres.

Yep, good point - though still was surprised we managed to get Alisson - we still don't have quite the spending power of a Barca, RM or Citeh, and he'd not be a bit out of place there.

But Torres at the time was a real surprise, decent price too. Was really impressed with Rafa's Spanish connections.

      Out of interest.......

How is a young Torres ā€œalready a big nameā€ but a resigned Rushie not?

That doesnā€™t make a lot of sense to me - maybe Iā€™m misunderstanding?

Rushie left us a world class striker. When he signed from Chester he wasnt We made Rushie, ok we sold and bought back but wed already made him. Were looking for instances of signing world class players
