I must correct you Keith he was more like a big guard dog than a jack russell, there was not much passed Tommy. He was a Liverpool RED through and through and was a pivotal member of the team in the 1960's and 70's.
R.I.P. Tommy you will be remembered for many many years to come as a good Liverpool lad and a top fearless footballer.

A sad one, this. I grew up hearing about the man from me Dad which was enough to make me love and respect him and then look back at videos of him etc.

Proper hard man but he shouldn't just be remembered for being that, the hard man, cos he could F***ing play that fella.

RIP The Anfield Iron. YNWA to a proper legend.

The big man having to live on benefits during his last years, f**king unbelievable.

Especially when you see some of the dross over the recent years who have become millionaires just doesn’t sit right with me!

I know what you mean Billy but as he was on the small side that's why I used that term. There's no doubt he would chop at the ankles of anybody hence my terminology.   ;D Great player though as we all rightly say. Can you imagine if he was playing his type of football in today's era  :D

From what I remember didn't he only play for Liverpool??

Former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith, who helped the club to domestic and European success in the 1960s and 1970s, has died aged 74.

Known as the "Anfield Iron", Smith had an 18-year career at Anfield, during which he won four league titles.

He scored in the 1977 European Cup final as Liverpool beat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 to win the trophy for the first time.

Liverpool said that they were "deeply saddened" by his death.

Smith, who made 638 appearances for the Reds between 1960 and 1978, had struggled with dementia and other ailments during his later years.

His daughter, Janette Simpson, told the club website on Friday: "Dad died very peacefully in his sleep shortly after 4.30pm today at his nursing home.

"He had been growing increasingly frail and suffering from a variety of ailments over the last three months especially.

      "We are obviously all devastated."

'He was a leader' - Liverpool greats pay tribute

Former Liverpool manager and player Roy Evans paid tribute to Smith, who was his best man at his wedding.

"It's a big loss and I know he's not been very well for a year now," Evans told BBC Radio 5 Live. "He was a great guy; he helped me through my career.

"He was a normal guy. We had a lot of fun together. He used to look after me when I first came to Liverpool. We'd go out and have a couple of beers.

"On the pitch he was very physical, but he was also a very good footballer. He was a leader. There will be a lot of very sad people tonight."

Former Liverpool midfielder Kenny Dalglish said Smith helped him settle in when he made the move from Celtic to Merseyside in 1977.

He told the club website: "Smith was a fantastic servant. He was a great advert for Liverpool football club. It's very sad to see him go, but his memories will be there forever.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher tweeted that Smith was "one of the club's all-time greats", a sentiment echoed by Reds chief Peter Moore, and ex-striker Michael Owen said he was a "legendary player".

'Liverpool legend in every single way'
Former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson on BBC Radio 5 Live

"He was a Liverpool great, a really good player and a beautiful striker of the ball. He played in the midfield and in the defence, and he took no prisoners.

"Tommy was a leader of men. Just to be able to play three positions in an outstanding team was great.

"All he ever wanted to do was play for Liverpool and the reason he played so many games was because he played injured. He really was a Liverpool legend in every single way."

RIP.  Don't think he'd been in the best of health for a long time.

Great player from our clubs history with the winning mentality that was so important to our huge trophy haul in the 70's.

I think he went to Swansea when John Toshack became the Swansea manager. Toshack was very astute and signed a few of our players and got promotion from the old second division.

Rottweiler of a defender Billy and he made the opposing defenders look like Jack Russells.
As stated Tommy was in a care home and had advanced dementia which had affected him for a number of years.
If I’m not mistaken he was born around Scotty Road and I do know after his playing days he ran a pub I think it was by Skem.
My cousin worked in the pub and she always said he was straight to the point and would not take sh*t off anyone, much like his days at Anfied.

      RIP Big Man.

From 3rd to 2nd according to Wiki, but still. I do remember him coming to America when the NASL used to be on TV. Quickly became player-manager in Los Angeles before joining Swansea.

Wiki also has a quote from Bill Shankly: "Tommy Smith wasn't born, he was quarried" Love it.

Forgetting that he was a top, top player, that kind of duration and tenure at one club, just unthinkable today with so many hired guns and agents all about the almighty transfer and signing fees.

I cant stress enough that he was a footballer first and a hard man on the pitch second. 5ft 11" isn't small and he was hard as nails and had to be in the era he played in and on pitches that modern players would refuse to start games on. I think his only England cap came when the entire back line of Liverpool was selected which is crazy you only need to play a couple of decent games now and your in the team. He won league titles, the FA Cup , Uefa Cup twice and the European Cup that's a lot of silverware at the very highest level.
