      David Moores RIP 1946-2022
      Jul 22, 2022 03:50:39 pm
LFC deeply saddened by passing of David Moores

Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former chairman and owner David Moores.

Moores served as chairman for 16 years from 1991 and became honorary life president after selling his majority stake in the club in 2007.

He died at the age of 76 on Friday morning, just weeks after his beloved wife of 39 years, Marge, passed away.

While his uncle Sir John Moores - founder of the Littlewoods retail empire - twice served as chairman of Everton FC in the 1960s and ’70s, David was an ardent Liverpudlian.

The Moores family held a majority stake in Liverpool FC for more than half a century and David took over at the club he loved in September 1991.

Alongside trusted chief executive Rick Parry, he presided over Liverpool’s entry into the newly founded Premier League in 1992 and oversaw the managerial appointments of Roy Evans, Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez during his time at Anfield.

David - who habitually shunned publicity, preferring instead to operate in the background - saw the Reds win 10 major honours throughout his 16-year tenure, including, of course, the Champions League in 2005.

However, the rapid financial growth seen in English football in the early 2000s led David to conclude that Liverpool required external investment in order to compete with their rivals.

He eventually left the boardroom in 2007 but, as a lifelong fan, his passion and support for the club remained throughout the rest of his life.

David returned to Anfield for the first time in a decade to watch Jürgen Klopp’s side beat Everton 5-2 in December 2019.

The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with David’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Terrible news, David Moores could not have done any better as owner, he honourably gave up his post knowing he could no longer keep up with the Jones’s, he took us as far as he could, condolences to his family and friends.

RIP David Moores.  You’ll Never walk alone

RIP David. Pleased to hear he came back to Anfield in 2019 after leaving under a cloud.

      Life is too short.

Really sad news. Will be remembered for all those trophies we won during his tenure. And overseeing the wonderful decision to hire Houllier who regained our status in Europe at a time when we seriously threatened to lose it forever.

Both men have left us but their legacies remain.

      RIP

Such sad news, he always had the best interest of this club at the heart of everything he did. He was heartbroken at the Hicks and Gillette debacle, he only sold because he felt he couldn’t take us any further, I for one never blamed him for that, he only sold to give us a chance.
May he and his wife Marge rest in peace. YNWA.

After reading about Marge only dying a few weeks ago, sounds like he died of a broken heart.

I wouldn't go quite that far but RIP to the man. Seemed to have a lot of time for people. Always sad when you read people passing not long after their partner.

Very sad news. He always had the club's best interests at heart and it's unfortunate his legacy was somewhat damaged by the H&G debacle. I, for one, never blamed him for it. He knew he couldn't take us further and tried to find a way for us to do so.

      RIP Mr Chairman, YNWA.

Sad news this today. Especially so close to the passing of his wife.

David always had the best interests of this club at heart. I seem to remember something about him putting his own money in so we could sign Dirk Kuyt.

The vitriol directed at him in the years after he left was nothing short of disgraceful and obviously this weighed heavily on him for many years.

A true red and an honourable man. Rip David.
