Tonight on BBC 2 Thatcher: A Very British Revolution. Part one of five.
Has to be acknowledged in becoming the first female Prime Minister, she broke the mould.Free marketeers had a field day,The Big Bang was a boom to the finance industry. She defeated Labour in three General Elections. Privatised (sold off) vast parts of British life. Reduced the power of trade Unions. Decimated not only the coal industry, she also crippled the steel making industry. Cut industrial subsidies to the bone. Massive cuts to Council grants. Cuts almost every Government department related to the community.
As a result of her control of the money supply, cuts in reality, a pet policy of every Tory government since 1951, she was responsible for massive unemployment. Many will waffle on about her free market revolution, selling off council houses etc etc but I think her main legacy is the creation of modern welfare dependency. In the industrial heartlands unemployment was rife. Coal towns were turned into wastelands. In a few short years, unemployment touched 4 million. As a result millions of families were forced to live off benefits. Inevitable a dependency culture thrived. These Thatcher policies damaged the fabric of British life, causing widespread misery and that legacy lives on.
In the end it was trouble with her EU stance, and the ridiculous Poll Tax, that led to her downfall. Knifed by her own party,Frustration with her stubborn lack of co operation with the EU. She was replaced by Major but Thatcher divided the country, greed and selfishness was the order of the day. She created vast industrial wastelands, ghost towns, put millions on benefits. She was a disaster for the vast majority of people in the UK.
