Newcastle United 2-3 Liverpool: In game and Post Match discussion
      May 04, 2019 06:47:09 pm
The penultimate Premier League match of the season sends Liverpool to Newcastle United for a reunion with Rafael Benitez at St. James' Park.

But fondness will be put to one side come 7.45pm BST as the Reds aim to once again overtake Manchester City at the summit with three points.

      Line-up:

      St. James' Park:

      Team Comparison:

      Klopp's pre-match presser:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p-w6UjsVTY

      Stat attack:

Here's a handful of key facts and figures ahead of kick-off...

Liverpool have scored 95 goals against Newcastle in the Premier League era - more than against any other team

There has not been a goalless draw in the last 65 league meetings between the teams

In Liverpool's 10 previous games following Champions League matches this season, they have won eight and drawn two

Victory over Newcastle and then Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day would see the Reds equal the club record of 30 league wins in a single season

Liverpool could equal two impressive club records in tonight's match.

A win at St. James' Park would be their 13th away from home in the league this season - a feat last achieved by the Reds in the Second Division in 1904-05.

A clean sheet, meanwhile, would preserve their tally of 10 league goals conceded on the road, which would match the record of Bob Paisley's team in 1975-76.

      News:

Four changes for Liverpool at St James’ Park as Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren come in for Naby Keita, James Milner, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the bench, but Roberto Firmino misses out due to the slight muscle strain sustained recently.

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Mane, Salah, Sturridge.

Substitutes: Mignolet, Milner, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Origi, Matip.

Newcastle: Dubravka, Schär, Manquillo, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Hayden, Ki, Atsu, Pérez, Rondon.

Substitutes: Darlow, Barreca, Fernàndez, Kenedy, Shelvey, Diame, Muto

      Last time out:

Liverpool's last Premier League outing was eight days ago, when Klopp's men registered a 5-0 rout of Huddersfield Town at Anfield.

Relive the story of that one in Inside Anfield below...

Studge starts, really not a fan of that. Would much rather Mo plays through the centre with Shaqiri on the right. Hopefully it doesn’t cost us. Come on lads, one more win to take it to the last weekend

No Firmino, even on the bench, hope he’s not OK for Tuesday.

Really don't know what to make of this. Confused actually.

What's the latest on Firmino then? I thought he was fine.. ??

Sturridge starting again yet he was out of the squad vs Barcelona, and Origi was preferred - yet Origi on the bench?

Is this a makeshift side with the priority being given to the Champions League?

I guess that confirms what many of us were saying the other night, in that Firmino isn't fit.

Exactly, and if he’s not in contention for Tuesday, we have an even bigger mountain to climb. I truly hope this is Jürgen keeping him fresh for Tuesday, because we do at least have it in our own hands, in that we can outscore them and go through! It is at best confusing.

It's still a strong side. Probably Firmino is only good for one of the matches, and by waiting until the later one he can perhaps go a little longer (or maybe have a chance to play from the start). Besides, it's not like his replacement is someone without experience. Daniel didn't shine so much last time out but he's obviously trained well enough for Klopp to choose him, and perhaps before Barca it was Origi who did that. Or maybe he expects the match to be played in Newcastle's end and will suit someone with Sturridge's penalty box skills more than an out and out running striker like Origi (for whom Barca would work better).

Anyway, it's not a makeshift side.

Hope so as well and it's just a precaution seems odd though unless he has had a reaction to midweek

Good line up, I especially like the midfield with those midfielders in it, what a good midfielder Gini is, had a bad dream that Klopp decided to experiment with him in a an important game..... that'll never happen!  COYR.

Studge in. Got to respect the Gaffa's decision. He obviously must think Studge is fit enough. TAA back in. Would've played him in Spain, Gomez looked a bit short of match practice which is probably the reason the Ox only makes the bench.

The way he walked directly off the park at full time Wednesday didn't look good. Hopefully we are wrong.

Well isn’t that what everyone was saying? If he couldn’t play more than ten minutes he must not have been fit.

It is what it is, we should have more than enough for the barcodes with who we are bringing.

As an aside, I see in The Echo that Barcelona have made 11 changes for their match today. Eleven.

To be fair, although Newcastle are our next opponent, we can’t help but look at the Barcelona game on Tuesday, Firmino in my opinion is vital if we are to overturn a 3-0 deficit. I still fancy us to win tonight, but Studge is puzzling.

Let's hope this is just a case of saving Firmino for Tuesday.

We still have more than enough to get a win.

      Enjoy the match reds.

Keeping Bobby for Barca I hope, no idea why he hasn’t made the bench at least tonight but maybe it’s mind-games for Barca on Tuesday,  having said that, it looks more likely that his injury is much worse than expected and no amount of X-rays or CT scans will make it better,

Gutted for Bobby, might have seen the last of him for this campaign, anyhoo, happy enough with that side, love us to take Wednesday out on Newcastle, get us a sh*t load of goals.
