Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: In game and Post Match discussion

Anfield once again hosts a Champions League semi-final as Barcelona are on Merseyside for the second leg of the last-four tie.

      Line-up:

      Stat attack

Some handy facts and figures to know before kick-off...

Liverpool have never lost both legs of a European Cup semi-final

The club have hosted 18 European semi-finals in the past, winning 14, drawing three and losing just one

The Reds have won three of their four European semi-finals against Spanish opposition

Jürgen Klopp's side have led at half-time in 25 games this season and gone on to win every one of them

The referee for this game is Turkey's Cuneyt Cakir. He has taken charge of Liverpool twice before - the 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and this season's 3-2 victory against Paris Saint-Germain

      News

Four changes for Liverpool against Barcelona tonight, with Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi coming in to join Sadio Mane in attack.

Elsewhere, James Milner and Joel Matip return, while Rhian Brewster and Ben Woodburn are on the bench, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out as a precaution due to a slight muscle strain.

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Henderson, Mane, Shaqiri, Origi.

Substitutes: Mignolet, Wijnaldum, Lovren, Gomez, Sturridge, Brewster, Woodburn.

Barcelona: Ter Stegen, S. Roberto, Piqué, Lenglet, Alba, Rakitic, Sergio, Vidal, Coutinho, Suarez, Messi.

Substitutes: Alena, Cillessen, Arthur, Semedo, Malcom, Umtiti, Vermaelen.

      Inspiration...

Liverpool need goals this evening and they need only look back a year to the Champions League semi-finals of 2017-18 for proof it can be done.

The Reds racked up five against AS Roma in the first leg of their last-four tie 12 months ago - relive the atmosphere of that night again below...

      Pretty much as I expected.

As I said in the other thread I hope it's Mane through the middle.

      Is what it is.

Don't think it matters what lineup we go for. We are in big trouble here, and Barcelona are massive favourites, not only of going through, but probably of winning tonight as well.

For us to pull this through, we need top performances from all our players, and we need to take every chance we get.

So - although I would usually doubt the likes of Origi and Shaqiri, or a midfield with Henderson alongside Milner, we have reviewed our poor hand, played the cards that we got, and we have to go for it now. Anything can happen. If Kompany can win City the league with a wonder goal last night... perhaps our lads can score miracles and we'll be blown away by their brilliance.

      Here's hoping...  ;)

Good to see TAA start this time.
Fab Hendo Milner, not the most creative middle, but guess you have to take some account of the opposition.
No Studge in first XI, which is fair based on recent showings - and a chance for Shaq Origi to write themselves some history.
Odds hugely against us given aggr score and injuries - but the 12th man could make a difference if we get at them with high tempo.
Season winding up, leave nothing in the tank out there, and hope we can be clinical with any chances we get.

Bit of a shame about Oxlade-Chamberlain being added to the list of casualties.  Thought he might have got involved tonight otherwise.

Shaq, Origi and Mane are all capable of scoring - just a shame that Barca have got a couple of them as well!

Surrised Virgil is starting to be quite honest, but not mad about it!

Woodburn a real head scratcher that.

Is Woodburn going to be our Mellor/Pongolle moment leading to a Mane last minute winner?

A bit disappointed with our midfield. To me, in a game you have to score in bunches, you cannot have Milner in the starting lineup. Looks like Klopp is expecting to lose the tie and be able to give Woodburn and Brewster some game time in the 2nd half.

I can see Origi playing out wide left with Mane through the middle. Mane is more likely to score a hat trick... Come on boys.

Yeah, I'd be happy with any win.  Certainly under normal circumstances that would be within the realms of possibility.

Injuries, the kick in the bollocks last night and the fact that we are going to be a bit gung ho might affect that outcome.

Not for the first time these past few months - we live in endless hope!

Going to be ending the game with a front six aren't we! ;)

Would have preferred Gini instead of Milner, Milner really struggled in the first leg I thought, even when we were on top.

Rest is as expected really. Probably should have gone with Trent in the first leg in hindsight but oh well, let’s see what happens shall we.

Match thread up and running, apologies for the delay.

Love this quote:"Just try. If we can do it, wonderful. If not, then fail in the most beautiful way."

Line-up is as expected, just looking forward to a good game of footy. We've had some wonderful games again this season in the CL.

Not his attitude at all. Bobby, Keita,  Mo, Ox and Lallana are all out injured. Brewster and Woodburn are next on the depth chart for attacking players. He consistent commentary is that we will try to pull off the unlikely. Not expecting to lose but going for the shock win
