      Rafa to leave Newcastle
      Jun 24, 2019 01:23:26 pm
Newcastle United say manager Rafael Benitez will leave the club when his contract expires on 30 June.

The Magpies finished 13th in the Premier League last season as Spaniard Benitez, who took over in March 2016, secured the club's top-flight status.

"We have worked hard to extend Rafa's contract over a significant period of time," said a Newcastle statement.

"However, it has not been - and will not be - possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives."

The statement added: "The process to appoint a successor will now begin."

Former Valencia, Liverpool and Real Madrid boss Benitez's coaching staff of Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gomez Perez and Mikel Antia will also leave the club on 30 June.

Newcastle appointed Benitez as successor to Steve McClaren with the club one point from Premier League safety with 10 games left in the 2015-2016 campaign.

The 59-year-old could not prevent the St James' Park club from being relegated but they won the 2016-17 Championship title to secure an immediate return.

Newcastle finished 10th in their first season back in the Premier League and 13th last season.

"We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved," the statement added.

"We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty."

There has been continued speculation about his future prior to the club announcing his departure, with Benitez receiving a £12m-a-year offer to take over as manager at Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang.

There has been talk of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley being in talks to sell the club to United Arab Emirates billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan's investment group this summer.

Prepare yourself for the Newcastle fume incoming.

Thought he was brave to take them on and did a fine job for them.  Hope he doesn't go back to Chelsea - he always ends up at the basket cases of clubs!

The 3 promoted teams will be happy as the Geordies will be fighting relegation next season.

No way the Chavs will accept him.

Time for Rafa to try the International gig maybe with Spain.

They must be mad if they are serious about selling the club, they've just lost their most valuable asset, just give him what he wants

Lampard is due to be announced apparently probably waiting for 1st July. Rafa should take a break.

Can’t see Newcastle having stayed in the top flight had it not been for Rafa, he’s done a very good job with them in circumstances that no manager wants to be working in.

Didn't Rafa say if the monies to improve the squad were not in place he'd walk?
Looks like Ashley's priorities do not specifically involve improving Newcastle's chancès of success.

he is on a good payout regardless of what he does football clubs in the EPL just keep going up in value. He is exactly what is wrong with football he doesn't like the game and hates the Fans but not as much they hate him

Newcastle fans will be devastated at this. By some margin the greatest manager they've had in the modern era, the only disappointment for them being that his tenure came at a time Ashley's skullduggery was at its worst and most damaging. They are only a Premier League club because of Rafa and without him they'd have become entrenched in the Championship and probably heading further down the football league.

With him gone and with no new ownership in sight for the club, you can't help but feel that Newcastle will be peering over the precipice and heading over the cliff.

In some ways Ashley’s methods are ironically reminiscent of Rafa’s time under H&G at Anfield where he faced an uphill battle to win anything in spite of the owners.
Our man no doubt thought this sh*t is not good for my health or sanity - I’m outa here.

I would of used the term (mirror image) to describe Ashley and H&G stuey. Rafa is too good a manager to be at a club like Newcastle.

Such a shame for the fans.

Not only have they got a greedy gobs***e owner, but now they've lost Rafa.
Given the right backing, he could have worked wonders there, and without him relegation surely comes.

A hugely talented coach, with a heart to match his talent.
Hopefully, Rafa will get a club that actually deserves him

I'm happy to see that the Newcastle fans really appreciate him and understand what a difficult job he had. Under the circumstances, he did great work for them, including some very good signings with barely any money available (players like Dubravka, Schar).

Ashley is only interested in the High Street and whilst his investment in Newcastle is safe he doesn't have to sell as long as they don't go down. Talk of Gary Monk coming in  that is like replacing Mo Salah with Mr Blobby

Definitely Rafa should go if it means Newcastle getting new owners especially because of how mutch money they have to put into Newcastle, they have the potential but they don't get enough money to spend on the transfer window.

Now that I come to think of it, the clube needs Rafa and Ashley needs to keep Newcastle, not to mention put money into the club, Mike Ashley is a billionaire how puts about 10 pence a season into Newcastle.

From a takeover and signing Mbappe to Steve Bruce, brilliant.
