I’d be impressed if we are still 9 ahead regardless of how City’s fixtures look because our schedule is every bit as tough, if not more so.

If we're still 9 points ahead of them then yes, we will have gained 3 points technically because we will have played one game less.

But their next 8 games are much trickier IMO than our next 7.

      are they??
      our fixtures are:

      Palace (A)
      Brighton (H)
      Everton (H)
      Bournemouth (A)
      Watford (H)
      Leicester (A)
      Wolves (H)

You aren’t taking all the other factors into account because it’s not so much the opposition, more having to manage the players more carefully because the number of games we have coming up. Remember City have virtually all but qualified from their CL group, we still have a tough game home to Napoli and away to Salzburg. So whilst they are resting players in their final game or two in preparation for their upcoming league games, we don’t really have that luxury. Not forgetting that whilst they are resting players in the league cup, we have two different line ups playing in less than 24 hours in 2 different countries.

The opposition in our up coming league games may seem easier than City’s, but they don’t have to manage their team as closely as us over the next 6 weeks.

Obviously it’s good for us because the more matches you play then obviously the more successful you are, but that then doesn’t mean we automatically have an easier set of games coming up because it’s two teams playing under two different sets of circumstances. Not forgetting that the games we have coming up are against a good number of opponents that we either dropped points against last season or only just scraped a win against where as City’s upcoming games looked hard at one point last season when we were meant to take advantage of an easier run but whilst we were dropping points, they were firing 6 past Chelsea, 3 or 4 vs Arsenal and blowing everyone away when it looked as though they had a set of games that would cause them problems so take nothing for granted, there’s no such thing as a guaranteed win. The way something looks on paper with fixtures can be a completely different story on the day.

I was taking that into account actually, but the only difference is one game and that game is the CL game against Napoli. If we win that one, which I expect us to do then we can rest players against Salzburg. We will then play a B/C team against Villa, so will Citeh against Oxford, whilst we play in the club world cup final Citeh will be playing a league game so there really isn't that much difference. The club world cup semi I expect us to field a heavily rotated team.
In other words in terms so of work load I think its more or less the same especially as they have the tougher opponents in the league.

In Man City's defence, they haven't got their full squad available.

I'd be interested to see the two teams best line up's excluding the players who started last Sunday.

It's supposed to be a team sport. So it's crazy how the loss of one player means the roof caves in. Alisson was out for two months and we barely noticed. If VVD picked up something tomorrow, we have a ready made solution at hand. We just put Fabinho in and even with a language barrier, he'll do just as effective a job.

      Quote from chats
People getting ahead of themselves a bit here, we've only closed the gap and overtaken them when we're parading the Premier League trophy around the streets of Liverpool.

The gap at the start of the season was paper thin. The gap after the Charity Shield was one penalty. The gap now is 9 points, and may well be 12 before they play again. Also,

We have 6 more points than at the same point last season.
We have 6 more points now from winning 3 fixtures this year, that we didn't win last season.
We can win a maximum of 112 points maximum this season, they can only get 103. Considering they needed 98 just to parade the trophy outside their stadium last May, that means they have very little margin for error for the rest of the season. Furthermore,

We have gone behind at Villa, and won.
We have gone behind v Spurs, and won.
We have gone behind v mancs, and got a result.

They have gone behind at Norwich, and lost.
They have gone behind v Wolves, and lost.
They have gone behind to us, and lost.

No bottle, no fight, no character. So it's no surprise that Trent can wander the length of the field with no attempt to tackle him, or players watching Hendo attempting back flicks, or staring at two full backs showing them how to cross a ball properly, while their defenders chip crosses aimlessly out of play. If their coach is "proud" of that, then they have a problem.

Never mind though, he knows who is to blame for it all. Mike Riley, Mike Dean and Mike Oliver apparently.

of course, but 9 points is a very nice buffer to have, it means we can afford to lose at least 2, possibly 3, more games than them for the rest of the season. In other words we could have a serious blip and still be in contention to win the title, they can't.

We saw this being put out on social media as an excuse for Man City.
"They have a lot of injuries"

Liverpool currently have more injuries than City.
Liverpool were without Alisson & are currently without Matip. Both Robertson & Salah have had ankle injury issues.

City's biggest issue is that they haven't replaced Vincent Kompany.

I've just looked at the fixtures in November and December and Citeh really do have a brutal 2 month ahead of them, hardly any "easy" fixtures at all. If they can come though that still within 9 points of us I'll be impressed.

      Chelsea (H)
      Newcastle (A)
      Burnley (A)
      Man U (H)
      Arsenal (A)
      Leicester (H)
      Wolves (A)
      Sheffield Utd (H)

They will drop points in a few of these games I reckon. Even the odd draw here and there helps us. All of those team are regularly picking up points.

So what are we going to do about the gap between City and ourselves.

Well we just keep doing what we're doing. That way the gap will increase.

I'm not sure what City have to do to close it now.

      Increase that points gap!

We are still way behind in transfer spending or net spend over the past few years. That gap is still there.

But we have to acknowledge the facts and be very honest about this. We spent much lesser, have a CL and are 17 points ahead of them right now for the league title. ;D

What kind of gap are we talking about?

      1) ability to win with ease?
      2) transfer spend?
      3) ability to consistently pick up three points?
      4) ability to win in "Harlem Globetrotters" style?
      5) ability to trash and embarrass opponents by three goal margin or more?

The answers will be clear once we know what parameters we're trying to compare and there could be more than these. It's what we define the gap to be isn't it?

Pep sounds very downbeat doesn't he. Looks like Arteta is leaving. Starting to think Pep might be a medal hunter, doesn't fancy staying and fighting it out with Klopp and United over the next few seasons. Arteta and Arsenal...mmmm....would've gone for Carlo.

I think the Prem is gone for Pep. If he doesnt win the C L this season, I think he’ll be a very downbeat manager next season, and be gone at the end !
You can see his enthusiasm waning in every interview he does.
      Light weight.
There’s a multitude of managers who could have won what he has, if they’d had the mega millions he’s had to spend, at every club he’s worked with.
He certainly can’t get to grips with Klopp however much he gets to spend. So who’s the top manager then 😂

Assuming this is true, he will never ever be a good fit for Liverpool no matter how tactically brilliant a manager he is. Not in the Shanks, Bob, Joe, King and Klopp mould is he? We’ve been fortunate to have managers who are more than tactically capable of winning titles.

And yes, with the money on his table, his job would have been much easier to accomplish. I could be wrong but seems like the wheels are coming off for him now.

The question on this topic is flawed,
The question should be have City Closed the gap on us ? ...their successes are relatively recent while ours stretch back over 40 years,
I can't ever remember City being ahead of us at anytime,

City will never close the gap on us as far as winning titles and silverware,  nor class & prestige,  in fact I would hazard a guess that once the shaky sheikh gets bored with his wee hobby the oil well of money will dry up.

Can't wait for that day !

If the oil wankers don't leave then they will most probably win 10 out of the next 20 titles.
