I certainly think the politicians do it. We had a television debate as part of the Tory leadership where on national telly they all agreed to an inquiry into Islamaphobia in the Tory party. Never happened, it was swept under the rug and no one mentions it again.
The press in the UK have gone very much to the right over the last two years, but again they are responding to demand. The politicians have created this environment where people almost ‘want’ to be outraged and upset and unreasonable. Ring wing media feeds into that. We’re becoming a populist state, which seems to be the trend across the globe at the moment.
Hopefully in 10 years time we will look back on this period and think ‘what on earth was happening there’, but I don’t have much hope.
The mainstream press has been a source of bullshit for years. I used to read six or seven papers a day, front to back. Many have stopped being news, they're opinion sheets. And let's just ignore the gossip in them, but the flat out lies about the EU over the last four decades is astonishing and how they'll tell half truths if the full story doesn't serve the narrative the paper runs. And whilst this happens on papers across the political spectrum, we have far more right wing rags in this country than left wing.
And it's all run on hatred and fear. Although the grooming gang headlines of recent days were concerning, it was still true that most sexual abuse of children was done by a family member and solo grooming, which affects more children than the gangs, was and still is a white man's sport.
And it's this road that has led us to today, with so many people not even caring that the man in charge of the country is, by deed and action, unfit for purpose, but they don't care because he appears to be trying to deliver the unicorn they voted for and it doesn't matter it didn't exist.
