Liverpool face threat of Carabao Cup expulsion
      Sep 28, 2019 10:53:42 am
Liverpool face threat of Carabao Cup expulsion as EFL investigates third-round win.

Liverpool could face expulsion from the Carabao Cup if they are found to have fielded an ineligible player in the victory against MK Dons on Wednesday.

The EFL is investigating possible issues with the international clearance of midfielder Pedro Chirivella, who came on as a substitute in the 2-0 win.

Sanctions could range from a fine to being ejected from the cup.

"The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players," a club statement said.

Spaniard Chirivella, 22, was making his first Liverpool appearance since May 2016 having been out on loan at Dutch sides Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II, plus Spain's Extremadura, over the last three seasons.

"We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete," Liverpool's statement continued.

The EFL added: "We are currently considering the matter."

In 2014, Sunderland were fined by the Premier League and the EFL after they fielded an ineligible player in four league matches and a League Cup match.

The club admitted they made an administrative error with striker Ji Dong-won but were not deducted points or kicked out of the cup.

Liverpool beat MK Dons 2-0 thanks to goals from James Milner and Hoever, and are set to host a fourth-round tie against Arsenal at Anfield in the week commencing 28 October.

      @JamesPearceLFC
Issue surrounds the eligibility of Pedro Chirivella and whether he had an international transfer certificate to play. #LFC believe they have a strong case for mitigation having made an application to the FA back in July.

Well, if the FA had done their job.... but should we have not made sure of the paperwork?

Both parties are at fault it may seem, but previous presedent is that we will not be removed from the Cup, but we are Liverpool so anything can happen, thankfully it is the Football League, and not the FA involved, and would they really want a big player to be kicked out?

Precedent already been set there so although it makes a good headline for the BBC, it looks like if something has gone wrong we will get fined.

Well look at it this way Klopp isn’t overly bothered by it other than give the kids playing time ,
Also it would serve to give them mancs and toffees finally something to smile about , can’t ever say we don’t put a smile on everyone’s face 😂
Would I like to win it yes overly bothered if they do their best to kick us out NO.

We are as bad as the FA.
If we ever got fined, i'm sure that is the least we can expect, then our people should also be fined for this administrative error to send a strong message to our staff to be extra careful and to take their job seriously. Unless they have done their job and klopp still fielded the player, then they cannot be blamed and klopp has to take the blame.

I'm not so much bothered about being kicked out of the carabo cup. What if we are playing an important game and got deduxted 3 points and we lost the league narrowly? That is a bigger concern to me, it is a big big wake up call,

Let the EFL kick us out if it wants. Will be their loss and nobody else's.

I think these organizations make a lot of patronage hires, leading to general incompetence.

Nothing on the EFL website, and on the BBC site, the EFL added: "We are currently considering the matter."

The EFL said in a statement: “Following a comprehensive review of all the evidence, the board determined that it wasn’t appropriate to expel the club from the competition because of a number of mitigating factors.”

Liverpool requested the paperwork in July but the process can only be completed with the Football Association’s intervention and that is where the club believe the error has been made.

A statement from the EFL continued: “In particular, the board noted that the club had sought the assistance of the Football Association in securing the return of the international clearance prior to the start of this season, and the club had been able to include the player on team sheets for Premier League Two matches [under Premier League rules] and one Leasing.com Trophy match, which resulted in the breach not being identified until the club reported the issue to the EFL and Premier League following the MK Dons match.

“As a result, the club has also been found guilty of misconduct in relation to the same breach for having fielded the player in the defeat against Oldham Athletic in the Leasing.com Trophy on 7 August, with the sanction incorporated into the financial penalty. The club will be liable for the suspended sum of 100,000, plus an additional sanction, if they were to again field an ineligible player in the Carabao Cup between now and the end of next season.”

A Liverpool club spokesperson said: “The club accepts the judgement, outcome and punishment imposed by the EFL. We believe it is proportionate with the technical indiscretion committed and will be making no further representations. Even though there were mitigating factors, which were beyond our control or jurisdiction, we believe it appropriate we apologise to the competition’s governing body and also to Milton Keynes Dons.”

Bit of a shame for Chirivella.

Could be worse, could have been £300 for tapping up a £100m player. But there again we're not Barcelona, and the EFL is not UEFA.

      Simple as that :D.

Yeah not good, not sure he'd be getting too many more minutes though. Could go out next round and if not the further we go, the more first team players will begin to feature.

Especially bad what happened to him last year where he couldn't play at all.

But in truth, his role at this club is to fill out the numbers for the U23 team so that some other, younger players have a proper context from which to play in matches and develop. That's the only reason I would think he's still on the books after multiple loans out, etc. If he fills out the numbers for EFL Trophy and perhaps subsequent League Cup matches, that is OK too, but he will be on his way at the end of the season. He'll land somewhere and make a living, but he's not going to be playing at the level required for our club. Just the harsh realities of trying to make a football career.
