      Our greatest ever goalkeeper
      Dec 15, 2019 08:53:59 am
Although I'm too young to remember Clemence, which probably makes my vote a bit void, I'm going with Alisson.

The most complete goalkeeper I've seen in a Liverpool shirt. Makes it look so easy with impeccable positioning and timing whilst his distribution takes the piss.

Ray Clemence stands out for me, although I can even remember Tommy Lawrence, nicknamed the flying pig who played in the sixties for the club.

I witnessed Friedel, James, Westerveld, Dudek, Reina, Mignolet, Karius and Alisson. Out of them, Alisson is the greatest but from videos I watched Clemence was better.

Ray Clemence was head and shoulders above for consistency and over a long term. He would have had many more international caps if that fat w**ker Peter Shilton hadn't been noshing off Bobby Robson. What a pair of creepy cu*ts they were.
Clem was like a third centre half, a brilliant shot stopper, and his distribution was top drawer. One season, cant remember which without looking it up, he conceded just 4 goals at Anfield. Yeah, not in a match, not in a calander month, not just F A Cup rounds. The whole F***ing season !
Tommy Lawrence before him was brilliant one minute, but prone to a clanger the next.
Grobbelarr who replaced Clem was probably the most athletic keeper I've ever seen, but didn't outshine clem for me.
Pepe another with brilliant distribution and probably top 2 or 3 in his time, but for me, nothing surpasses Ray Clemence.
Perhaps its my age and a bit of nostalgia creeping in, but my all time greatest keeper ever.

Type of thing I was after. I have only heard how good he was.

For me, ability wise, Alisson is the best I've seen but feeling a bit educated now.

I would have gone for Pepe if it was a vote for the Goalie who celebrated every goal with gusto.
Clemence was incredible and remember when he played Goalkeepers were fair game for strikers to knock chunks out of. He was incredibly agile some of his saves simply out of this world. 16 goals in 42 league games is just incredible.
However I wouldn't have anyone else in the world right now ahead of Allison he is simply the very best there is right now

Never saw Clemence so it's easy for me. Alisson is so phenomenal that he makes all those torturous years of Mignolet in goal worth it.

The three mentioned are all 'keepers at the top of their game, they were/are all internationals and could walk into any top flight team in the world,
On the day it would be impossible to put one above the other or guage their respective importance to LFC.

Clemence was awesome and as you mention carried that brilliance for many years, the 'flying pig' who he succeeded had some F***ing howlers and in the day at Anfield there was a mutual gasp whenever the ball was in his vicinity, nobody had a clue just what his reaction would be.
Thankfully Lawrence had more good games than bad as opposed to Clem who was the model of consistency.

Alisson though looks a big time keeper and already I'd have him as the best keeper we've had in the prem era.

Clem all day every day twice on Sunday,  this fella was head ,shoulders & nipples above anyone else and i include Shilton, Bonnetti, Pat Jennings and even Gordon Banks,
He was robbed of many many England caps by England manager's preferring golden bollocks Shilton rather than a 'Scouse ' Clemence,
There is No doubt in my mind that the goons at the FA had influenced their managers at the time and most definitely seen Shilton as the perfect little Englander,
He was a great keeper of course but Clem was better, and I'd put him right up there alongside your Dino Zoff's and Lev Yashin,

As for Allison,  he's a way to go yet for legendary status but he's definitely on the right path and will get there, but not quite yet .

It may have been that match where Cheyrou scored the winner against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge? And then we loaned Paul Jones from Saints to cover for a couple of months didn't we? As Walt mentioned goalies where fair game back in the day & any forward going in at clemo had a set of knees planted in there chest because he always claimed the ball out the air with his knees up.

Just had a butches on his profile on lfchistory.net and it says he signed in 57 but didn't debut until 62. Also didn't realise how young he was when he actually established himself as our number one. At 22/23, that's a really young age for a keeper.

What were those before him like Bill? The likes of Tommy Younger and Bert Slater?

Why you trying to shut down what’s developed into an interesting topic?

People are allowed to state their own opinions regardless of what the stats say.

And much to the frustration of Walt, Clemence was way before my time so it’s been Pepe and Allison to me and as much as I loved Pepe, Allison wins that hands down.

Tommy Younger was coming to the end of his career when Shanks arrived at Anfield and the boss swapped Tommy for Bert Slater.Berts problem was his height ( just like Pickford of Everton.Shanks saw the problem and bought Jim Furnell from Burnley in 1962.Furnell was not a success and he was sold .In came the late great Tommy Lawrence and thanks to Tommy we won the league in 1964 So Tommy took over from Furnell

We are lucky to once again have a keeper in this discussion after the years of crap from Mignolet, Bogdan, Doni and whoever else.

Lots will say Clem and rightly so but then lots haven’t actually seen him play properly. But for every bit as great that Clem was, it’s hard to think of a keeper thats come in and had such an impact on the team as what Alisson has. The game has also changed a lot and the way keepers play now is different to back then, but if Clem is currently viewed as the greatest then once Alisson has been here for another 2 or 3 years, there’s every chance that opinion could change to him.

Things could very well change in 2 or 3 years time but this thread was only started yesterday. So opinions voiced are current.

Whether he'll ultimately stay long enough to be considered alongside Clem, Tommy Lawrence or even Brucie time will tell.

But - of this I'm certain in my opinion......

The most complete and fundamentally sound keeper I've seen in my nr 50 years following the Reds is Alisson Becker.

By popularity then. Results are also influenced by age distribution or the generation of this board. It's another great way of looking at it.

Exactly.  My fave will always be Brucey. Clemence the best.

Allison can become a legend when we win the league, but Adrian will have to get an honorable mention for this season already, probably cult hero goalie. ;D

Dudek also, champions league winner. :-)

Was born in 1993 which is way after the Clemence years but it'd be hard to argue against him being the best.

Elisha Scott is a name which also gets spoken about as being one of the greats, supposedly the first "King of the Kop" as he was apparently the first Liverpool player to have a recognized chant. Unfortunately he was between the sticks during the 20's & 30's so there'll be very minimal (if any) footage of him plying his trade.

Ability-wise Alisson is the best that I've seen with my own eyes, by some margin too. Which is quite the compliment because Pepe Reina was absolutely brilliant also. Especially during the first few years of his career

Still can't believe he got away with those penalty saves. He was that far off his line he was basically squaring up to the Milan players by the time the ball had left their foot.

He was prone to the odd clanger but always seemed to step up when it mattered. I remember him keeping a clean sheet & getting MOTM in a League Cup final against United about 15 years ago. One of the best goalkeeping performances I've witnessed from a Liverpool keeper

He owed us that after the Forlan clanger during the Utd league game at Anfield.

Grobberlaar for me.  I thought Pepe Reina would take him over but was here long enough.  I can see why Clemence is at the top he was magnificent even in his twilight years at spurs can only imagine how he was at Liverpool at his peak.  Allison has the potential to take the mantel but will need to be here for a while because Bruce and Ray were here for well over 10 years about 14 years each.  Can't achieve them legacies  in a few years.

Why did Ray Clemence leave? I mean surely wasn't because he was over the hill he played the best part of the 80's.  Just interest to know from the older guy in here.

Seriously? And that was it.  Or did he believe Paisley was going to give Bruce the gloves.   Because Clemence was very good at Spurs.  I didn't watch him regularly but when I did he was damn good at spurs and definitely one of the best goalies in the league.

      YNWA

Agree that Clem was OUR best ever goalie, but draw the line in saying he was better than Gordon Banks. The greatest attribute Clem had was he was a great reader of the game and he seemed to be in the right position all the time, as well as being the first sweeper goalie. As well was a that I knew Clem quite well, hisforename being the same as mine, (so not doubt that colours my judgment,) and had a photo taken with him and Kevin Keegan at Tommy Lawrence's funeral. Will post the photo sometime if I can find it. By the way how do you post a photo on here?

I agree with your assessment about Gordon Banks,we had some battles with him in the 1960's.In fact it was rumoured that he was coming to L.F.C. at one time and I would say you are spot on regarding Ray Clemence.I had a photo from the Echo showing Gordon Banks laughing at St John after Leicester had beaten us in a F.A.Cup Tie. I still think Clem was our best goalie but it looks as if Alisson will surpass him if he continues with his present form.

Technically Allison is the best we've ever had but hard to compare GK's from different eras, they were all very good goalkeepers, to think we went from that to Migs and Karius!

On the basis that most things progress Alisson will probably prove to be the best. Clemence was possible the best from our history, shouldn’t be forgotten that he learned a lot from Tommy Lawrence. It was Tommy that very often was almost a sweeper. Clem kept that going.

Pepe was strongest in the air. Mig saved 8 Pens. Ray saved 9.Grob 13. Thought Kirkland was going to do well but he never kicked on.Obviously has to be remembered that we have, in most cases had top internationals in front of our keeper and very often they only had one or two saves to make.

Yeah i agree, probably Alisson will be proved as the best one we ever had, still a bit early in his LFC career to call him the best one ever.
