For f**k sake just sounds pure wool!

Is wool used for anyone outside of Liverpool or more for those just on the outskirts trying to be scouse?

"Woolyback" I think originates from labourers in Cheshire who back in the day, used to load wool onto wagons to be transported to the dock, they used to sling bales of wool on their shoulders or backs inevitability causing it to shred on their clothing, hence the term "woolybacks".
It is used to describe anyone from outside of Liverpool.

I reckon it is used a lot more specifically for those on the outskirts but maybe within a 50 or so mile radius!  I'm thinking North Wales, Lancashire etc.  More likely to hear it for someone from Warrington and Wigan than Newcastle or London IMO.

True enough JD, I should have been more specific In mentioning just Cheshire.

I always thought the woolyback term originated for someone from Prescot and further South.That is how the term was used in the Page Moss area.

I think wool is becoming more of a state of mind than a geographical thing.

Some of the biggest wools I know are from Liverpool (mainly Aigburth)
