Lockdown a week earlier in the UK could have saved about 32,000 lives and led to a shorter, cheaper and less economically damaging lockdown.

Figures were based on the doubling time which was about every 3.5 days back in March.

This was essentially the week long dither period when the government advised you not to go to the pub but didn't close pubs.

Think I've been in lock-down since 11th March, with some form of social distancing fro a week before that.

      The clues really were there.

Admitted the government was to blame for the care home fiasco, admitted shutting down a week earlier would have saved countless lives, admitted their will be a hard border in Ireland, failing to deliver, as promised, the quick and easy trade deal with the EU and all whilst trying to say it isn't their fault, looking to blame others and diminish their responsibility. Tory scapegoating season is open it seems.

Correct Mate, well at least to us. However, looking at your picture above this is exactly what we don't need and will bring the second wave on unless government intervene.

20th a March I shut down my business..been out since for the hourly exercise & food essentials....

I’ve seen plenty of selfish dickheads since..

On the way back from the cemetery I saw 2 car crashes..🥴
      Boy racers overtaking cars..

Some people don’t deserve to come out of lockdown..

Number of people with coronavirus in England remains stable, says ONS
The number of people with coronavirus in England has remained stable since the end of April, according to new data, with nearly 140,000 people infected in the last two weeks.

The second snapshot of Covid-19 rates in the community, taken by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), found that 137,000 people – 0.25% of the population – had coronavirus at any given time during the two weeks from 4-17 May.

The previous set of figures showed 148,000 were infected in England between 27 April and 10 May, but the ONS said “the change is relatively small and it should be interpreted that the number of people in England that have Covid-19 is relatively stable”.

The study found there were an estimated 61,000 new Covid-19 infections per week in England in the last two weeks, an incidence rate of 0.11 new cases per 100 people living in private-residential households.

The survey tested 14,599 people in 7,054 households, of whom 35 individuals in 32 households tested positive. The figures do not include people staying in hospital or care homes, where infections are likely to be higher.

The ONS found there were no differences in the rates of infection among men and women, or people of different ages. Between 4-17 May, 0.26% of women and 0.21% of men are estimated to have tested positive. The figures refer to infections reported in the community, and exclude those reported in hospitals, care homes or other institutional settings.

The study also found there was no difference between the proportion of those testing positive for coronavirus who worked as nurses, doctors and care workers, and those not working in these roles.

Of those working with patients in healthcare and those in social care roles, 0.24% tested positive for Covid-19, the same rate as those doing other jobs. The previous survey found people working in patient-facing roles had a much higher rate of infection, 1.33% compared with 0.22%.

Yet again the period covers 2 weeks, unlikely that the same 134,000 people had the virus for each of the 14 days.

New infections probably at least 10,000 per day in England (more likely to be nearer 20,000).  Must admit I'm a bit surprised that this hasn't dropped from the two weeks previously.

Becoming clear that the decision taken to stop track and trace and community testing on 12th March has been an issue. The focus of testing was on the hospitals.

"This "pivotal" decision to stop testing for covid-19 has had "significant consequences" including allowing the virus to run rampant in care homes..." This was the conclusion of a cross-party commitee of MP's.

      https://inews.co.uk/news/coronavirus-testing-uk-missed-critical-moment-stop-covid-19-outbreak-testing-community-2857430

It was as late as 18th April when testing was restarted in care homes, staff and residents. And even then some have said testing was sporadic at best.

Department of health, Public Health England, scientific advisors all maneuvering to avoid blame. Obviously this virus has caused mayhem in many countries and the Tory Government won't be alone in making mistakes. Some countries were better prepared than others but it just seems as if this Tory administration has made mistake after mistake and that has left many at the mercy of the virus.

Slowly starting to get some sensible figures from the Govt.

They're saying almost 20% of Londoners have had the virus.  My gut feeling is that it's about this averaged for the country. Somewhere in the low tens of millions.  Almost 75% of people with no symptoms at all.

This virus is shocking in its virulence only because it is new and the population hasn't faced it before.  The figures from Iceland are correct. It has an infection fatality rate of less than 0.4% and it won't be anything like Spanish flu of 1918.  It will become endemic but in future years it won't be a significant issue like influenza is.

Best strategy remains protecting the vulnerable, like it should have been from about February.

I stick by my original prediction that I won't be offered any vaccine for this.

Read yesterday that the government were counting some tests as 2 tests because you stick it down your throat and then up your nose. So 1 person but classed as 2 tests. Cooking the figures if true. Up there with counting individual gloves rather than pairs.

UK scientists are to begin testing a treatment that it is hoped could counter the effects of Covid-19 in the most seriously ill patients.

It has been found those with the most severe form of the disease have extremely low numbers of an immune cell called a T-cell.

T-cells clear infection from the body.

The clinical trial will evaluate if a drug called interleukin 7, known to boost T-cell numbers, can aid patients' recovery.

It involves scientists from the Francis Crick Institute, King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital.

They have looked at immune cells in the blood of 60 Covid-19 patients and found an apparent crash in the numbers of T-cells.

Prof Adrian Hayday from the Crick Institute said it was a "great surprise" to see what was happening with the immune cells.

"They're trying to protect us, but the virus seems to be doing something that's pulling the rug from under them, because their numbers have declined dramatically.

In a microlitre (0.001ml) drop of blood, normal healthy adults have between 2,000 and 4,000 T-cells, also called T lymphocytes.

The Covid patients the team tested had between 200-1,200.

Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus pandemic began, conducted well over 1 million nucleic acid tests on Saturday, the local health authority said.

A total of 1.1 million tests were administered, down from 1.4 million the day before.

A new mass testing drive started following the emergence of a cluster of new infections. Authorities had originally promised to test all 11 million people in 10 days.

A wet market in Wuhan is believed to be the source of Covid-19, which has claimed the lives of more than 341,000 globally.

I'm well aware that some people blame China in all of this but I don't think anyone can argue that their response has saved many many of their citizens lives.  To think a country where this virus began of 1.3 billion people has managed to contain it inside their own borders

Imagine if this virus actually emerged in the UK or the US with zero warning - the numbers would have been worse by many magnitudes.  We had 3 months warning about it, not to mention a number of weeks from our European counterparts.

Been to those muckdonalds in Sutton and the sight of those morbidly obese parents waddling their morbidity obese kids to the feeding troughs is astonishing, can well imagine these piggy families putting the finger up to common sense and the safety of others.
