      Club Furlough Staff (Now Reversed)

Premier League leaders Liverpool are the latest top-flight club to place some non-playing staff on temporary leave.

Staff affected will receive 80% of their salary through the government's job retention scheme and the club will make up the difference.

Newcastle, Tottenham, Bournemouth and Norwich have already announced they will furlough some non-playing staff.

The league is suspended indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A Liverpool statement said: "Even prior to the decision on staff furloughing, there was a collective commitment at senior levels of the club - on and off the pitch - with everyone working towards a solution that secures jobs for employees of the club during this unprecedented crisis.

"There is ongoing active engagement about the topic of salary deductions during the period matches are not being played to schedule. These discussions are complex and as a result the process is ongoing."

There was criticism when Newcastle and Tottenham became the first Premier League clubs to announce they were placing non-playing staff on furlough.

Health secretary Matt Hancock said Premier League players should "take a pay cut and play their part" during the pandemic.

Since then, Premier League clubs have said they will ask players to take a 30% pay cut in order to protect jobs.

All 20 top-flight clubs have agreed to put the proposed "combination of conditional reductions and deferrals" to players, during a video conference call between the Premier League and players' union the Professional Footballers' Association on Saturday.

The Premier League has also said it would advance £125m to the EFL and National League, and give £20m towards the NHS.

      Bit disappointing that.

Yes we are topping up the last 20% but as a club I don't think we should be asking our staff to get onto the government scheme targeted for much smaller companies for 80% of their wages.

Said it when Spurs did it and I'll say it now. We should not be paying multi million and billionaire companies through the Furlough system. That to me is not what it was meant for, it was to keep viable businesses going, helping companies to keep staff employed through this crisis.

Multi million and Billion £ companies are abusing it, and this club is now no different and once again on a contentious issue like this one Fenway come out on the wrong side of it.

'We' can afford to pay our own staff and if we can't then our players should be taking cuts to go into that pot.

There is no need to be putting further burden on the tax payer where it blatantly isnt required.

Absolutely sh*te that. Really really poor.
We’re getting absolutely battered for this and rightly so. What on earth are they thinking? Terrible move.

Massive own goal that by the club and not a good look. Sure we are looking at wage cuts for the team but I didn’t think we would pull a stunt like this and do a Spurs. All well and good saying Hendo is leading up a campaign to support the NHS but the club are now essentially having the tax payer pay 80% of the staffs wages.

Right after we’ve been announcing how good our profits have been.

      Poor form that, very poor.

It'll have no effect on whether we win the league or not even if rival fans want it to.

This is something I’d have expected to see if the club was being run like it was before the arrival of Klopp.

      Shocked.

Yeah it only shocks me in the respect that I thought the club had sorted out its act on these matters, but like I said before Fenway always seem to come out on the wrong side of these contentious matters.

Its like they don't see the impact of their actions until they make them. From trying to raise ticket prices, attempting to trademark the term 'Liverpool' and now this.

      PR disasters really.

Absolutely shocked at this to be honest, somehow thought we were better than this. It just goes to prove that very rich men will do all they can, to still be very rich men at the end of this, while  the rest of us are just focusing on keeping our families, ourselves and each other alive! I thought we were a family, sadly only when it suits! Come on Liverpool, lead the way!!!

Considering the amount of money floating around in the PL this is pretty pathetic.

Bang on from Carra. Hopefully the club take notice and see they’ve majorly messed up. All that talk and then a stunt like this.

Disappointing that Klopp has let this happen. It’s not too late for them to do the right thing and reverse this decision.

Business decision taken above Klopp's head, whoever is head of the club this side of the water will have made this decision with direction from Boston.

Clearly the case, but Klopp’s view has a big say on things at the club, or at least it was always made out that all decisions were made as a collective.

If they’ve gone over everyone’s head with this, then with Klopp’s continual support for everyone at the club, this has some potential to not end well IMO. Either way, after an apparent constant display of the club being a family unit, the constant talk about the profits etc, this is an incredibly bad look for the club and they deserve all the hate that is going to come at them from outside the club and all the criticism that they will be getting from the fans.

This is quite embarrassing, considering the resources we have - should not be waiting for taxpayers money.
