Is it me or Pot 3 looks nasty, I would prefer to play none of those teams away! Apart from Krasnodor or Tel Aviv. I think Ajax, Shaktar, even Dortmund in Pot 2 would be more straightforward than Pot 3.

I say away from home as thats a record we need to improve in the group stage and generally in Europe.

Although, could do with swerving Leipzig if at all possible.  Pretty decent opposition for pot 3.

The other fella probably VAR'd it, and convinced himself it's now in the evening after 83 replays.

I know the knockout stages are about that time but isn’t the group stage draw usually later. I know last year’s was certainly because it coincided with the award ceremony with big Virgil taking away the main prize.

It's normally on Friday mornings as I recall. But I don't think it's quite the gala affair it normally is.

But I've had to correct the time which I thought was a UK time but it was U.S. time. To be honest, since I've started working overnights I typically don't even know what day it is, and I can't tell sunset from sunrise, so apologies.

Probably another casualty of the fixtures being so compressed. Look at the matchday schedules, we play three midweeks in a row, off for an international break, and then do another three consecutive weeks (also why the League Cup dates are all together for the early rounds).

The European Cup Group Stage draw is a Thursday afternoon event in Europe. With nobody there, hopefully they can just get on with it instead of all the usual time wasting for intros and interviews and presentations and turning a 15 minute draw into an hour long slog.

Wonder if English teams will be at a slight disadvantage for this due to the closed door scenario? Near enough the rest of Europe now seem to have fans back in stadiums to some degree but I'm not sure when we'll be at that point, with the October return date now pushed back. I think it's quite possible that we won't see supporters back in stadiums here until the new year, meaning that English clubs would have to play all of their home group matches behind closed doors whereas a lot of European teams will have supporters at theirs. Not that the likes of the Etihad or Stamford Bridge are intimidating atmospheres for European teams to play in like, but I can imagine if we needed a win from our last home group game it would be that extra bit harder without the supporters

Are any Euro nations currently banning travel from UK?

Am curious what the opportunity will be for Liverpool supporters to attend away European matches.

Zero I would think, I imagine away travel wont be allowed, tickets not given to the away team and unlike the players and staff the fans would have to self isolate on return even if allowed

But I cant see any away travel allowed for some time to come, even domestically when fans are back in stadiums

Look at the farce they're making of it in the early rounds of the fa cup this weekend as an example

Think it will be less to do with travel and more to do with the clubs themselves prioritizing their own supporters. I'd say 30-40% is the best capacity we're going to get anywhere around Europe for the next few months at least so unless Uefa say there needs to be away supporters (which would be incredibly careless) then I can't see any for the foreseeable. As a rough guess I'd say maybe quarters / semi finals at the very earliest. Also in the pre-covid world Uefa would get a corporate allocation which was near enough the same as the away allocation, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if corporates were prioritized above away fans once some extra tickets do become available & the capacity percentages increase

37.5% chance we'll draw an English mob. 3 English teams in pot 2. Think the pots go by UEFA rankings. We are 10th on that list.

Only exception I can remember was ourselves & Chelsea being drawn into the same group in 05/06, but I think that was down to some weird technicality with us having to qualify through the backdoor after finishing 5th but winning it the previous season

So if we are drawn out, how do they keep us from drawing city, utd or chavs, if all are drawn from pots blind !
Do they return them and keep trying until they get a non English club, or is it ‘fixed’ before we get to that stage 🤷‍♂️

Don’t fully understand how they can be fairly avoided in the current situation !

City (as per) and Chelsea been very lucky.

With the way the pots are distributed now (champions and holders of the two trophies in Pot 1), there's no real advantage to being in Pot 1 over 2 anymore.

No disrespect to their teams, but two of those teams we can play our B team and we should get a result.... the more games our younger players can get the better so I’m happy with that draw.

You reckon we could field our B team against a team that has finished 3rd in Serie A the last 2 seasons running and reached the quarter finals of the Champions League last campaign? I mean I’m confident we will win the group but I think you’re underestimating Atalanta.

Come on it's the Champions League. Not going to get very far putting out B teams.

It's a good draw for us but you got to respect the opposition. Ajax are dangerous and have a knack of replacing lost players well whilst Atalanta scored 98 league goals last year and got to the quarters. I don't know anything about Midtjylland but I do remember when Red Star were meant to be the sh*te team of the group but we got beat 2-0 away to them.

Not going to be a cake walk but we avoided what could of been more difficult group.

Went to Rome a couple of years ago and had my lad with me and was thinking of going to the stadium there but from what I remember it looked miles away from the centre and wasn't on the metro so I lazily swerved it and went to see one of the dead popes in the Vatican instead.

Should clean up against Ajax, Atalanta and Midy shouldn't tax us to much. Good draw.

We said that about the group last year. That went to the last game.

Ajax were 1 minute from facing us in Madrid, and away in front of their fans in the first game, is going to be tough. Atalanta got further than us last season, and they'll also have a home crowd for it. The Danes are the Gent of the group. But they scored 4 goals in the last half hour in their qualifier against Prague. Losing the tie with 10 minutes to go, they scored 3 in the last 10 minutes, the first from a penalty for one of "those" handballs, and the saved penalty retaken after the keeper went walkies off the line. But they look like the novices they are, and ideally we'll get the job done before going there on the last night. At worst, this draw should guarantee European football for us after Christmas.

It is likely that all 3 opponents will have a crowd for their home games.

Any of you who know all these things explain why we might have only named 7 homegrown players in the squad and only 24 in total?

I think the rules are that you can have a maximum of 25 players, and if you do, 8 of those will need to be homegrown. If you don't select 8 homegrown players then you'll need to leave a space in your squad to compensate for not hitting the quota (IE - if we only selected 6 homegrown players then we'd only be able to have a 23 man squad etc)

Players under the age of 21 can still play without being registered, which probably explains why they haven't just thrown one of the homegrown u23 lads in to make the numbers up

Is there a benefit to not naming 25 players? Like signing a player in the Jan window, can they become the 25th player if not previiusly involved with another club?

Just curious as Wilson could have been named as the 25th player and 8th homegrown so by not naming him or another weve a spot left

They'll have a second registration in February after the winter window closes & I think you're allowed to amend your squad however you like as long as you keep in line with the quotas & squad size rules

No idea why they've omitted Wilson. Seems a strange one, like. Unless he's being lined up for a loan move abroad or something

Liverpool confirm Champions League squad with Xherdan Shaqiri in but midfielder missing
Liverpool have registered a 24-man squad for the initial phase of the Champions League this season

Liverpool have registered a 24-man squad for the 2020/21 Champions League group-stages, but there is no room for Wales international Harry Wilson.

The Reds are allowed to name a maximum squad of 25, with eight of those ‘locally-trained’, but Liverpool have opted to only utilise seven of those spots with James Milner, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott all named for this year’s group-stages.

Wilson ’s absence, despite there being room in the squad for his inclusion, prompts fresh speculation about his future with the club despite remaining at Anfield after Monday’s transfer deadline day.

Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri has been named in the squad despite also being linked with a Liverpool exit.

Alisson is also included despite currently being sidelined with a shoulder injury, reiterating the Reds’ hopes he will return to full fitness in four to six weeks, while summer signings Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas have also been registered.

The likes of youngsters Curtis Jones and Neco Williams are not named, but they do not need to be to feature for Liverpool in the Champions League this season.

The duo were both born after 1 January 1998 and have been eligible to play for the club for an uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthdays so are eligible to be registered on List B.

In contrast, Elliott does not yet fulfill this criteria, hence the 17-year-old's inclusion in Jürgen Klopp 's announced squad.

If Liverpool progress to the Champions League knockout stages, the Reds would be able to register a maximum of three new players by February 3, but the overall limit of 25 players on List A remains.

Klopp’s side face Ajax, Atalanta and FC Midtjylland in this year’s group-stages, with German allowed to utilise five substitutes from a matchday squad of 20 for fixtures.

Liverpool’s Champions League squad in full (Home-grown players in bold):

      Goalkeepers:
      Alisson Becker, Adrian, Caoimhin Kelleher.

      Defenders:
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

      Midfielders:
Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum, Thiago Alcantara, James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harvey Elliott.

      Forwards:
Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Takumi Minamino, Diogo Jota, Divock Origi.

He should be on his way out. If he plays for us in any CL match wouldn’t that deem him unavailable to feature in the same competition for his new club? Michael Edwards would lose pricing power if so.

Edwards: Take him, he’s available to play for you in the CL. Therefore I’m selling him to you at a higher price.

Yeah think he'd be cup tied for the CL & (I think) the Europa League too

Always remember that summer Owen went to Madrid, the rumours were swirling around but nobody was sure if he was going to leave or not, then Rafa didn't select him for our Champions League qualifier against AK Graz & that all but confirmed he was off  ;D
