A total gent who brought silverware and more importantly respect to this great club.

I always look back at Gerard as the beginning of not only a new professional era at Liverpool but also the real end of our European wilderness.

We were becoming a forgotten force on the continent by the end of the 1990s and he changed that.  He made qualifiying for Europe become a necessity again to remain as LFC manager.

Very very sad news, as others have said  he was a real gent and a fabulous manager for us, starting the revitalisation of the club and dragging it into modern times with some great cup success along the way.

      What sad news.
That 2001 season is still my favourite season to look back on.
      The Gary Mac goal.
      The double against United.
      Owens fa cup final.
The penalty shoot out victory in the league cup final.
The uefa cup final was immense. But so were the games prior vs Barcelona and Roma.

6 trophies in his time. And like many have mentioned, he set the foundations for a modern club. Foundations which Benitez took advantage of.

      Nice bloke.
Thanks for the many wonderful memories.

      Frankly, Mr Shankly

The most awful news to read this year. I'm absolutely gutted. He was, like to so many growing up in the 90s and early 00s, my first Liverpool manager. He was my first idea/conception of the manager. The boss. In my mind, everyone who followed built upon that idea. His teams made me fall in love with the club.

JD got it bang on - he redefined us and dragged us back up to a standard that was befitting of Liverpool FC. He burst us into the 21st century. For me, he was the first Liverpool manager to throw his arms around the world.

A big part of my childhood has gone, but his presence and legacy will forever be with us.

      Rest in peace Gerard.

      Keeps popping into my head.

The impact he had, Gerrard broke through under him. Signed Ssmi, Gary Mac, Babbel, Henchoz, Cisse, Heskey, Riise, Vladi, Jerzy.

That 01 season..The treble robs the limelight but getting the qualification for the champions league, the final day v Charlton.

The night he came back from illness v Roma, wow.

Such sad news but it has warmed my heart reading all the lovely tributes to Houllier today. I myself had a brief encounter with him back in 2014, when I was working in the World Cup and he came to the office where I was working one day. I introduced myself to him as a Liverpool fan and said I was honoured to have him there. He was lovely, the kind of person who clearly had time for everyone. It was only a very brief chat but I never forgot those couple of minutes.

A few years ago, he was scheduled for a talk to my class at the University of Liverpool, I was so excited about it I even bought a book about his time at LFC that I was going to ask him to sign. Unfortunately a few days earlier, he had to cancel his trip due to health reasons. I guess his health has always been quite fragile but I still regret the fact that I wasn't able to see him that second time.

      Rest in peace, Mr Houllier.

My favourite anecdote about Ged is that he was a teacher and coincidentally worked at Alsop school in Liverpool for a few years before he entered his managerial career. I've no doubt some of the skills & qualities he gained in that stage of his life helped him become a mentor to so many great players further down the line. What a man

You could always see that he genuinely cared when we won or last, always came across as very warm and genuine. Was really sad when left, it was the right decision but you could tell what it meant to him. Thank you Gerard

Lots of Houllier banners on the Kop tonight. Shame there isn't going to be a full house to sing his name but I'm sure the 2000 that are lucky enough to be in attendance will give him a great send off.

Be raising a toast to him at home whilst watching the game. Gone for 3 - 0 in the predictor, a goal for each Trophy he brought back home in 2001. Stickig a few quid on it in the bookies too
