Not arsed about FA cup. just wanted to beat the mancs.

Nice to see more threat in attack last night, couple of individual errors cost us. that's it.

And yes, we do need a CB, but still dont see it happening till the summer. Can blame owners, luck, covid, whatever. It is what it is.

      YNWA !!!

Spurs have four (Sanchez, Dier, Alder and Rodon)

Chelsea have four (Christiansen, Rudiger, Zouma and Thiago)

City have five (Stones, Laporte, Diaz, Garcia and Ake)

United have four (Lindelof, Mcguire, Bailly and Rojo)

We have three of which two are constantly injured.

So in that list there's no one who "can play cb".

The issue is not so much having 3 CB's, Fabinho can be considered a 4th CB for short periods of time, the issue is that two of our main CB's are very injury prone, one incredibly so. I would say that all we really need to do is replace Matip with someone who can play more than 2 games before pulling a muscle. Joe also is quite injury prone but within acceptable parameters.

      I agree.

The board should have looked at Matip and seen his injury record. That should have been enough to bring in another CB.

Also, why does there have to be two starting CB's then someone who knows he'll play second fiddle?

Why can't we have three very good centre backs who will battle it out for the starting two spots?

I mean, by the time the summer window opened, we were only former champions league, current premier league, current world club cup and current super cup champions.

Aston Villa spend more than us!!! Did Covid happen to miss them?

Many here do Lovren injustice. The guy is one of the best CB's in the world, he played in the World Cup Final with Croatia (which has many good footballers to choose from).

I think this whole mess is mainly Jürgen's fault. He refuses to play lower to support our defense. With such a tactic he could play Rhys and Nat and put Fab back into midfield. Instead he plays like we usually play (= very high) and of course this tactic is more risky and suited for Matip-VVD who are faster, more skilled and more experienced. Not smart. Buvac would call out Jürgen for this. :)

Its probably a good point, if we played a lower block/line then we could play Rhys and Nat. We'd then need to switch to more of a counter attacking system, but I think that could work quite well especially with 2 quick full backs and 3 forwards!

But to play this system your whole backline and midfield need to be switched on. Concentration levels need to be close to 100%. Your team will spend most of the game defending and cutting passes in behind whilst defending in blocks.

I've seen enough of Trent and Rhys to know this system won't work with them.

Trent will get skimmed allowing balls in to our box/in behind him whilst Rhys will just switch off and his positional play is awful

hmmm, that also a good point, but if teams like West Brom can low block then I'm sure we could as well, although our system would provide an outlet which is a big difference. In reality it would not be anywhere near as low block as some of those bottom dwellers, but playing a high line is very very risky with inexperienced and slow CB's so a bit lower could be a good policy.

Really need to sort out the defence one way or another. It was a welcome relief, to see Mo Salah score a couple of goals on Sunday even though, we lost ! Let's hope this gives the side more confidence to out score the opposition, starting away at Spurs, on Thursday night.

Basically play to your players strengths.
Playing a high line is only workable if you’ve got wide midfielders who can cover your marauding full backs, and  center backs with pace.
The latter we don’t have at the moment, so a deeper sit would benefit us. As long as we don’t let teams play between the lines of our defence snd mid !

I'll take your World Cup Final which means F**k all to Liverpool and raise you a semi-final of the Champions League, we're 5-0 up he misses a header, Roma score and all hell breaks loose in our defence. That's why he ended up behind Matip as a replacement for Gomez in 2018/2019!!
