Pre-Match: Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool: Premier League (Thu 28th Jan 8pm)
      Jan 26, 2021 07:42:52 pm
Liverpool return to the league campaign with a trip to north London to face Jose Mourinho's men. Spurs are one point behind us but have a game in hand. Thus far in 2021, They have league wins over Leeds and Sheffield United and a draw vs. Fulham, plus FA Cup wins over JB Marine and, on Monday, Wycombe.

Questions will surround Liverpool's team selection, with the midfield in particular requiring some important decisions. Jordan Henderson's fitness issue is a particularly vexing variable.

So here's a thread to talk about our team's prospects in the coming match. Hopefully it will not become yet another thread repeating the same complaints about the owners or the manager, but I am not counting on it.

We will be about mid table if this slump doesn't end soon. So a good a place as any against a free-flowing, gung-ho, dynamic Spurs team.

                 Alisson
      Milner Matip Fab Robbo
        Jones Thiago Gini
         Salah Taki Mane

Wouldn't start TAA in the form he's in, would stick in Milly. Unless TAAs form is better. Not Neco either unfortunately.
If Matip can't play, would play Nat, don't think he could be worse than Williams. Hope he can though or we might be in trouble.
Shaq has a good pass in him, just don't think his general play/work is as good as Jones. AOC is in headless chicken mode. Naby, who knows.
Thiago and Gini select themselves, there's nobody fecking else.
Salah can get a goal, Mane and then Taki instead of Bob.

Not sure Jürgen will pick Taki though, haven't seen him in a while, while we've seen Origi. So maybe Bob or Shaq in front3 with Mo/Mane...
And he'll prob go with TAA.

Wasn't going to even bother doing a team up.
Whoever is selected, if we don't play better than we have been, we'll get beat, or maybe draw.
Even just a small bit of F***ing luck, a deflected goal, might just signal a bit of a turn in fortune.
Though things are bad when hoping for a bit of luck.

Expectations are low, we've been playing poorly, written off by some - just go out and F***ing do yer things lads, chest out, if going down go down with a fight...

      Well win this.

If Hendo is fit Id play him with Matip. His long range passing ala VVD would be huge in this game.

Id play Milner Fab and Thiago in a 3 and either Shaq or Jones between those 3 and the front 2 of Mo and Mane..

No Hendo then Fab at the back Thiago Milner and Shaq in the middle

Spuds away, one of the toughest to get anything from, Maureen hates us meaning he’ll have added impetus to F**k us over, we are weaker than we would normally be so another filip for that c**t, to me there are four stand out players who will give us most trouble, Kane, Son, Holjberg, Dembele, if we can combat those 4 we will have a decent chance,

Milner in for Trent, nah, he’d get ripped to F**k by Son, we need pace so Trent in at RB, Matip will play also having missed the Munts game, we will need his height for set pieces, Rhys didn’t work next to Fabinho and was clearly out of his depth,so I’m putting Phillips in and here’s why, he’s good in the air and is more adept than Rhys, it’s not ideal but I’d rather it be him than Rhys, the rest pick themselves, but i am tempted to swap Bobby for Taki.

                                                                             Alisson
                                                              Trent Matip Phillips Robbo
                                                                            Fabinho
                                                                     Thiago        Gini
                                                                  Salah     Taki    Mane

Bench; Kelleher, Milner, AOC, Bobby, Shaqiri, Jones, Divock

In games like these I want Fabinho protecting, if Hendo was fit he’d be in too, probably for Gini, Keita another option if fit, this is what is hurting us, not having the big fella obviously but our midfield is weakened playing Fab at CB, Trent’s game has also suffered without Virgil and without Hendo, who covers from him going forward, it is a gamble playing Phillips but no more so than Rhys at the toilet, on their day Spuds could rip us a new one, especially in central areas, so we need to be competitive in there hence Fabinho in to break up play and keeping tabs on that cheating c**t Kane.

I'll take a draw. It's about Top 4 & CL now (City is 7 points ahead of us, forget the title). A point on the road against a quality team in the middle of adversity is not bad.

Mourinho will sit deep and wait. We better do not play impatient and too high. Let them make the game for we are safisfied with a draw.

If indeed that is true I’d go....... 4-2-3-1

                                       Alisson

                         Trent   Matip  Phillips  Robbo

                             Hendo         Fabinho

                            Shaqiri  Thiago.  Mane

                                        Salah

Changes the dynamics having Hendo back, allows Thiago further forward, which will give Dyer & Co nightmares, covers for Trent so he can bomb forward as with Robbo down the left, he adds much needed steel in alongside Fabinho and he can shout, scream, bollock, command and keep the boys in line so we play as a unit, have more cohesion, and have a better balance, give it ten minutes and watch the confidence soar, without him I’d be happy with a draw, with him we will win !

In our current situation against a top4 contender on the road? Yes.

Nonsense, you never ever play for a draw, its a very dangerous tactic, especially with a makeshift defence.

The best tactic for us in every game is to attack and simply score more goals than we concede.

As for this game we will win, I am fairly confident of it, especially if we can start Matip with Fabinho in defence and have Thiago, Hendo and Gini in midfield with a hopefully rejuvenated front three and Trent regaining some form.

I saw more than enough against Manure to suggest we have turned the corner.

Massive game. 5th v 6th if they win they jump over us and still have a game in hand on us.

Ive said or a while now that top 6 v each other will be vital. Weve been strong in thst mini league so far, well need to keep that up...not sure if its must win but its 100% must not lose

Unfortunately whether it’s actually must win or not, it sure feels like it is so the pressure will be the same. Boys have to perform. If they come out and lay an egg I fear for the moaning and drivel that we will have to endure......

This one is massive for me.

If we go there and win we've made a massive statement.

If we go there and lose we'll have all the other teams around us licking their lips at playing us.

I fear for this game. United looked very dangerous when they countered us. Spurs are a better counter attacking team than scum.

I think Harry Kane decides this game for Spurs. He'll drop in to that area where we have no DM. I think Hendo will need to start in midfield to limit Kane's impact.

I'm dreading Son vs Trent. He will need to to really up his recent performance levels. Is he able to?

For me, this is a must must win. We can't afford to slip and go 9 behind united. That's too much to catch and it would mean finding City like form which, with no new CB, just doesn't seem realistic

Unfortunately whether it’s actually must win or not, it sure feels like it is so the pressure will be the same. Boys have to perform. If they come out and lay an egg I fear for the moaning and drivel that we will have to endure......

Hang on are we no allowed to be unhappy about recent games and results??

I think it is kind of strange that we're favourites for this game considering our form, but hopefully the bookies have got it right 😄
I can't see past a draw myself, but It would send a message if we got a good win. Mane is due another goal, fingers crossed for a vital 3 points.

I can’t take another draw, would rather lose with a bit of fighting spirit (high scoring game) than another 0-0 / 1-1

I can see your thinking but against Son and Kane we need as strong a defence as possible and with Thiago and Shaq in midfield it should be plenty of creativity anyway.

Not sure Phillips contributed to winning the league or maybe you refer to our strong defence which again would not contain Philips I am afraid Fab is at CB for the long haul

It would be suicidal to play Nat or Rhys against Son and Kane, in any case Nat is clearly behind Rhys at the moment although I have no idea why.

Yes I was making the point that rather than us worrying about the opposition with using our best players who drive us on and protect the defence Fab / hendo - let’s get on the front foot

3 points out of 15 surely warrants a little thinking on what needs to change
It goes without saying that Jürgen is the best manager we have had in years so I am sure he will get it right he usually does

A reminder to the players from a certain Mr. Shankly, on the pressures of being a footballer at such a famous club with high expectations:

“Pressure is working down the pit. Pressure is having no work at all. Pressure is trying to escape relegation on 50 shillings a week. Pressure is not the European Cup or the Championship or the Cup Final. That’s the reward.”

A draw tonight although acceptable but not ideal. A win against Spurs, would certainly be the perfect start to kick starting the second half of the  season, with plenty of points to play for, over the few months.

I saw a big improvement in our overall game on Sunday despite getting beat.
Better movement and more chances created.

I just fear for our right side of defence and Son won't take any prisoners tonight just like Rashford didn't on Sunday.
Trent is getting exposed week after week at the moment so he needs to be aware of where Son is on that left wing otherwise he'll punish us, like he did at Anfield a couple of months ago.

Last thing I want is Jose grinning at the end after picking up the 3 points..

Always a tight one to predict against the spuds but I reckon we can sneak it 2-1

As said earlier, a draw wouldn’t be too bad, a win would be great, but with our inexperienced cb’s and midfielders out of position, we’ve just gotta hope for the best.
Taking advantage of last nights results would be a huge statement.
Plus it’s always a joy to beat spuds, even more so now, with Jose at the helm !
A bit nervous now, but can’t wait for KO.

Wouldn't go as far as saying it's a "must win" in the literal sense but in terms of the title race it's massively important. Don't even think the most eternally optimistic of us on here (and I'd say I was one of them) would be filled with confidence for the title if we were beaten tonight and City went 10 points clear of us on Saturday

In my opinion this is a "must not lose" match, more than a must-win, but a victory here would give us back that spark we've lost in recent games and I fully believe we will win tonight.

Have to disagree with you there, I think a win tonight is far more important than simply avoiding defeat. I don't think I'd be much happier with a draw than I would be a defeat - unless we put in a remarkable performance. Draw the game and we still wouldn't have won a league match for over a month and City could very well extend the gap to 9 points on Saturday. Winning tonight is paramount

Id just swith Hendo and Fab....reason is twofold...can Fab give us that spark in midfield andvallow Thiago dictste further upnthe pitch plus I think Hendo can give us those raking balls out of defence which we lack without Virg

Fabinho is better than Henderson to cope with Son and Kane. He's been on fire.

I don’t see this as a MUST win in terms of our title retaining chances, but it is a must win in terms of our confidence and momentum going forward, I think that’s what Si was alluding to in his post, correct me if I’m wrong Si.

The way I see it is I think Jürgen will try a different approach to what we have been seeing of late, I think he will play a midfield trio of Hendo, Fabinho & Thiago, Matip as CB obviously and Phillips next to him, we need Trent in his customary role but as some say Son could piss all over him considering his form, this is where Hendo comes in, he’ll protect Trent and obviously get in a Son’s way,  Fabinho back in at DM will protect Phillips so in essence Fab & Hendo between them defend the back four the whole width of the pitch, & gives license for Trent & Robbo to bomb forward and link up with Thiago, all then squeeze the space almost to the half way line & beyond, linking up with the front three, play with a high press, high tempo,

Maureen prefers to defend rather than attack, especially against top six opponents, he opts for the opposite against sides who don’t have the same threat as we or City do,

I’m confident, I reckon we will win this, not easily that would be foolhardy but, we seen signs V MUtants we can mount attacks with attempts on goal rather than the side to side going nowhere borefest.

Pressure is a family all banged up together in a rabbit hutch with no money coming in ...during a global pandemic without end.
Don't keep looking up at others you think are better off than you.
      Look down.
There many more worse off than you.

Count your blessings and remember what you can and cannot control.

Yep. Agree with all except one item here:

The pandemic is coming to an end. Cases and hospitalizations are down and as more and more get vaccinated each week, we have a good chance to be back to normal re lockdowns, schools and work, by the end of the summer. It won't last forever. Take heart!

See Jose Boreinho is mouthing off about Klopp showing passion on the touchline again. How can he even compare? He is one moaning tw*t and makes it very hard to like him, unlike Klopp who is just passionate and kicks and heads every ball with the players like a supporter. Pleeeeeeeease win Liverpool pleeeeeeeease.

Feel quite confident about the match tonight , we did play better last time out and I believe we can do this ,hopefully Matip and Fabinho in defence , Thiago to play further forward , just don't want Origi to come on as a sub

Won't get many games where going into it 3 of the teams above us have dropped points. With west ham away next and where they are in the league that game as well as tonights are must win games in my view. Yes we want to win every game ... but 6 points from the next 2 will gain us a foothold going into the games after that against utd city everton and leicester which would then be a chance to at least get back upto 2nd and focus on catching city.

Don't get the results against spurs and wesh ham and we will be cut adrift having a scrap just to get in the top 4.

It's a must-win in that it's against Spurs and you want to beat them every f**king time, but no, it's not a must win and we won't be relegated if we don't win.

That said, some of the whiny bitches on here deserve an alternate world where Liverpool did go into administration and is toiling in the lower leagues of English football, then the rest of us could enjoy the most successful team in the world the past couple of years.
